Could somebody explain me how are this litlle creatures (those who enter and get out of the paramecium) capable of actually getting out? I mean, I know they enter by the citostome, but, where is the exit? throug the membrane? I don't think so, please help me to clarify this question =D
Of course, this is probably might be just feeding. But, Dawkins's vision is all right. If you watch these creatures, you can see mechanic and the assemblance of parts.
I suppose there is nice explanation, but referenced from reading Richard Dawkins "Selfish Gene". These smaller creatures is coming in and out Protozoa, but these species staying inside is trying to accomodate to new environment which is exactly the interior of Protozoa - if they succeed in adoptation, they will eventually become organella and thus make advance for Protozoa. Thus, a flagella or a extremity is nothing else than adopted creatures who has made adoptation and symbiosis.
Hi Yourleaderslie. I'm better at filming this stuff than understanding it, so I can't really add anything to others' comments ;-) Thanks for kind comments Peter, I'll look into your suggestion and will let you know the outcome,
Congratulations again, Iain. This is marvelous quality from such a cheap microscope. You obviously have a real talent at this. Re what is happening, have you thought of asking the Royal Microscopic Society? rms.org.uk Regards, Peter.
Thanks. It's a simple "point and press" compact camera on the manual and macro settings; the Canon Powershot A720 IS at 6X zoom, just balanced on top of the microscope. I then used the fantastic free software VirtualDub (google it for download) to increase the contrast a little.
What those little circles circulating inside are food vacuoles. The cilliate draws in food via the buccal canal/cavity, draws it into the cytosome, a membrane goes around the food and enters the cytoplasm where it can digest the food. With the other little organisms or the food that it doesn't like, it exits the body via the cytoproct (like a dustbin).

@Ribeneky Many ciliates, in addition to their cytostome, have a structure called a cytopyge, a cellular analogue for an anus, for waste disposal.

@TemplarLucas Thank you, actually, I discovered that after a little bit of searching on the internet. But thank you anyway. Have a nice day! =D

don't you feel bad for the protozoa

A really high quality video. I am impressed. Can you tell me what camera you are using? I'm still shopping around, and this is the best I have seen.

Structure breakdown:
0:40-food drawn in via the BUCCAL CAVITY or cannal
0:41- food inside the CYTOSOME, membrane placed around food (food vacuole)
0:44- doesn't like the food, expels it via the CYTOPROCT
0:54- draws another organism into BUCCAL CAVITY
0:56- inside CYTOSOME, look closely you can see a membrane being placed around the food!
0:58- likes the food, food vacuole enters the CYTOPLASM, which eventually gets broken down. providing energy for the cilliate!
