Great video man. However I would like to add that just like others that are demonstrating the hindu squat and pushup. Everyone seems to be leaving out one vitally important part of the exercise. There is a certain way you need to breath when performing this exercise and very few people show this in their videos
@1969jmac Thanks! What I recommend is all breathing through the nose and breathing out as you go down and in as you come up. Is this aligned with your thoughts on the matter?
@BeYourPotential Yes the opposite of what you would normally think of in weight lifting. You should breath in while drawing the arms in to the chest, and exale on the upward or downward motion of the squat. I've seen it performed both ways. I personally exale on the way down in the squat, so as to deflate the chest and abs while the body is contracted during the squat. Then forcefully explode up and inhale on the next row of the arms coming in toward the chest
Hahaha, I've only ever seen village hillbillies do that. But then Yoga was in India in 5th century B.C when the West was pretty uncivilized. The aliens did set up life in Geece and India... And yet Christ's more popular than Zeus or Shiva!
@intrigued1231 You are quite right. Just let the heel come naturally off the ground, so you are on the balls of your feet, keeping feet facing forward.
Thakns for clearing up the knee thing. I don't own any weights or belong to a gym so I sometimes forget that most people are talking about weighted exercises, whereas I'm only interested in what I can do with my own body (not looking to "get big" or bulk up, just trying to lose the flab and get some lean muscle going).
I have finally started doing them, man this has me banged up quite a bit. I weigh less than when I said I was going to do them (might have not been a good idea at 267 pounds) If I feel knee pain how do I correct this?
Thanks so much for explaining the knees-over-toes thing. First time I tried Hindu squats, I thought they were easy; then couldn't walk the next morning. A week later, I heard "don't let your knees go forward" for the first time and I've been worrying about which one is right ever since. Big weight off my mind. I'm getting back to hindu squatting tomorrow.
i did 4 sets of 20 and my legs were like jelly afterwards. that was yesterday. now i can barely walk from muscle soreness. good pain just can't do crap. these are seriously tough but beneficial.
@HonkIfYouLoveHonking It would certainly add some more resistance. As long as your movements are fluid without jerkiness and you already have the technique down then it would be ok.
Unweighted or body weight only the knee should be fine in many positions on fit healthy people , Looks like a great exercise for coordination I'm reading "combat conditioning" and its highly recommended.
@vibit7 I did 35 today. Plus over the course of the day I pumped out 50 pushups. I also held a bridge exercise for my core. It doesn't take much. I've just been patient and start adding in small amounts of bodyweight exercises and watched myself develop.
I'm about 310 lbs with 45-50 percent body fat and I did 20 of these last night because of listening to Joe Rogan's podcast. Wow! My legs are jacked today. I took today off and maybe tommorow and then I'll see if I can do 25. Gotta start small when you're out of shape.
Good for you man! I am 5'11 and I weighed 280lbs at 20 years old, I'm 22 now and down to 190lbs and feeling great. I still have some some excess fat but still steadily improving. I feel so much healthier and am able to move and function in ways I never imagined I could before. Much more strength, stamina, and flexibility. My advice is stick to bodyweight exercise unless you just want to bulk up, it's all I've done. That and I drink only water now, aside from rare occasions.
@jadelion11 You start flat footed, and as you smoothly move down you will end up on your toes and balls of your feet. Keep your back straight as can be and feet about shoulder width apart. In my case I drop to about 85-90% of my total way down and come back up to flat footed. I found dropping 100% of the way down ended up bothering my knee joints over time so thats what works for me.
India have given YOGA to the world....Let me clear one thing YOGA doesn't use word "exercise" .everything is "aasan" or say pose !! I am regular in that and it's damn good thing to stary your day !!
What is the deal with the breath control with these... they say you're supposed to exhale down and inhale at the top, but that seems unnatural. Shouldn't the core contraction (and thus exhalation) begin with the extension of the legs and the upward motion of the arms against gravity?
Just asking in case you have an opinion about that.
@kozmon0t Good question. I am not sure of the exact science why, but many yogic movements are performed with the breathing the opposite to how we would be taught in the west with regard to physical exercion. They have been doing it this way for thousands of years and with good reason. If you can find something that explains the science please let me know. It is to do with the flow of energy, and that is all I know.
These are good. I can do about 100 reps in about two mins now. Working my way up to the Hindu Wrestler goal of 500 in 15 mins. Consistency is key I guess. And remember to control breathing, that is crucial to this.
@OneCovenant4All Hit 1000 in 34 mins last week :D (roughly 3:40 per 100 pace by that point) I can do 500 in 14:47 but omg.....at about 600 your quads are screaming bloody murder lol! This exercise gives so much good for being so bloody simple!
@BeYourPotential I encourage you every step of the way showing this and the other simple exercises like the hindu pushup. They are so low impact yet deliver such incredible rewards. That took me 4 months to get that number, and it was 90% mental by that point. Its such an excellent exercise. My legs NEVER get tired now, I have explosiveness, my cardio is massively improved, my range of motion is clean and fully flexible and mental focus greatly improved as well. All around a great exercise.
@BeYourPotential I should also mention that to get a real benefit out of them they must be done at a good pace that gets the heart going with the exact form you showed. For 500 one would be required to maintain a pace that lets them finish in 15 minutes or less. But for those just starting or with medical conditions (cleared to exercise by the doc FIRST of course), a very moderate daily easy pace, at numbers comfortable to them, and a depth they can handle will still pay enormous dividends.
I do these in a pyramid: 1 rep, pause 1 count, 2 reps, pause 2 count, 3 reps, pause 3 count. Go all the way up and then all the way down to whatever your top is: 1,2,3,4,5,6,5,4,3,2,1. That way your get your reps, but don't task the CNS so hard and you will recover faster.
Oh Jesus. After watching this yesterday I tried em today. Got to 70 on my first go. Damn they are hard. I can squat 400+ lbs (deep) so thought these should not be so hard. Man what a great exercise. I recommend this to everyone. Going to go look up some other hindu exercises now to add in to my regime.
Would have been more helpful if we could see your feet.

@toolworks Yes I know. just let the heels naturally lift as you descend and sit back down again as you ascend.

Nice work. I hurt my back after many years of heavy barbell squats. When I recover, I will practice the Hindu squat.

Let your heels naturally come off the ground and your knees bend naturally as well while keeping your back straight.
