I don't know, having read the books I think Robert Downey Jr. could pull it off, and they seem to be embracing the more eccentric side of Holmes, the drug addicted side with his odd ticks. I'm more worried about weather Guy Ritchie is the right man to direct it than if Robert Downey Jr. is right to play Holmes.

in the story you mentioned, he was in an opium den for his investigation, but he did not actually do opium that I know of. I might be wrong, but I'm pretty sure he didn't. Viva la Sherlock! ;)

So RDJ doesn't exactly match the physical description of Sherlock Holmes in the books. So what? It's not like being tall and excessively lean is a necessary characteristic for being a good detective, so I don't see what it matters. Besides, there have been a lot of actors in movies based on books who don't match the descriptions from the novel. For example, R.P. McMurphy from One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest was played by Jack Nicholson even though he was a burly redhead in the book. Who cares?

So all "Sherlockians" are just obnoxiously persnickety? Please! I've read Sir Doyle's novels, so stop acting like you're a bigger fan than anyone else. Fans of the Sherlock Holmes series are no more ~omg intense~ than Trekkies or any other variety of fanboy/fangirl. This is no different than the Marvel fans who complained about RDJ being cast as Iron Man only to later act like they've always been fans of him. RDJ is Sherlock now. If you don't like it, you have the option of not seeing the film.

Spare me the lecture, Sherlockians have a fanbase that has lasted well over 100 years, and RDJ will either be a memorable Sherlock Holmes or a mediocre one of which there have been countless examples throughout the history of cinema and television.

No shit, well, Sherlock. Holmes is one of the most well-known literary characters in history. Even if this film is mediocre it will not cause any lasting damage to the Holmes legacy. Like Hamlet or Dracula, Holmes will survive even the most misguided of adaptations. Therefore, you have nothing to worry about.

Of course not, Sherlock Holmes has survived far worse than Max Headroom even so one more good or bad film won't affect the canon.

The screenplay for this film on sherlockiandotnet is interesting but wheither RDJ will be able to pull off the part is another matter.

However Moriarty and Irene Adler plus Mary Morstan does sound like an interesting combination for this film.

but I would rather have seen Hugh Laurie in this part.

Okay. Well, I don't doubt that Hugh Laurie would've been good, but RDJ was the one selected to be in this movie. I know that you get your mind set on something and it's hard to see it any other way. I totally understand that. But you've acknowledged that RDJ is capable of giving fine performances, so why not hold off judgment until you actually see the film? Go in with an open mind and you may be pleasantly surprised.

Lol. Contrary to popular belief, Holmes didn't always wear a deerstalker hat and Inverness cape. He also never said "Elementary, my dear Watson," for that matter. But I digress. I think they are going to play up the more quirky aspects of Sherlock's character in this film. I haven't yet read the script, but that's the impression that I get.

OT, but I took some meds for my cold earlier and they've just now kicked in and I'm starting to feel a bit loopy.

well, they wanted a 'fresher' look to holmes. i don't like the look, but it's what guy richie stated. he isn't tall or thin like holmes was intended, he's shorter and, if you see the shirtles pic, muscular, while holmes was intended to be slender yet full of stamina and energy. i really dont know of reservations, but the filming has to be almost all the way through by now...so i don't know. good question to ponder, eh?
