I just bought an alienware M17X even thought dell owns them now the Alienware team claims they still have the freedom to build what they want

so far i love my M17X; upgraded the HD to ssd and added 8gb of ram' its as fast as my desktop q6050

so far the battery has not caught on fire :)

dell actually do some great deals if you want a "runaround" notebook, but the prices they charge for high end pc's are a joke. A nice case is only worth so much and i think they rely on brand awareness and lack of consumer knowledge too much.

I have the xps 730x, you can get just the case on e-bay sometimes, and it is the best case/quality I have worked with, very thick, light aluminum, also the lighting system is awesome, even after my i7965+ x58 mobo is outdated i will use this case for my next build, it has 8 expansion slots for 3xSLI, the side window looks awesome, comes off with the pull of a very crisp, well designed handle, the drive bays are awesome, Very very very hard to find this quality in a case

Actually its the opposite, buying from a big company like DELL ensures you get a good deal on their parts, because they get everything cheaper, then just reinstall a clean copy of the OS and have fun. Custom building even though I do it at some occasions, is for people who need top of the line to run games like Crysis.

pc building/modding is for the hardcore minority more like hobby. as for the average majority consumer base buy from big companies like dell is still the most viable option. theres also many things that can go wrong building and most people don't have time/interest to invest to building when can just buy one for reasonable price from one of the establish and trusted major companies. my next pc with be prebuilt generic from dell or somthing, and after that will get into building.

Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6850, its 65 nm for godsakes, for that much money you'd expect the latest technology, such as 45 nm Core 2 Extreme QX9650, but the depreciation is even worse, after 2 or 3 years your $5,000 XPS would worth like not even $1,000

2 cards over one just give a fancy 1.6x more stability. youre better not activating sli or crossfire. and let them connected. if a card need help the other one will give here some support.insted of fusing into one card. dosnt make them faster. just 2 core and two times more memory. and if one fails then the hole comp fails. and you have to hard reboot.

i know cause i use a crossfire setup.and i don't recomand it. get a strong card insted of 2 or 3 weaker cards.

it depends on how well you can take care of your pc. if you run all teh cleaner programs you have once in a while it will last. i'm using teh final tower model of sony vaio's from 65 or 6 yrs ago b4 sony went into laptops. and it hasn't been messed up at all.
