It should probably be mentioned that most those bills are fraudulently inflated -- e.g., hospitals will try to collect $9,000 for a $600 MRI.
It seems to be due to a combination of 1). fraud being upheld by courts; and 2). tax system encouraging write-offs of noncollectable receivables.
