Does it make sense to have your crew there if you are intending to make contact? Look at the lean of the russian ship prior to collision - it is leaning away from the american ship. Looks like the russian captain is attempting to pull away but his ship is getting pulled into the larger ship by its wake.

FYI.... The US Captain was not relived of duty. He continued his normal tour and was relieved several months later. The Captain was later promoted to Rear Admiral and became the naval liason to the French government and other posts before retiring to civilian work as the production manager of the shipyard that produces American warships. I was on-board Yorktown during the incident.

You are right absolutely. This photo is made at coast Puerto Ricos. I used this photo as position of the case of a vessel reminds sharp turn. The destroyer certainly has not sunk. Moreover, it has received insignificant damages in comparison with a cruiser. SKR-6 was too small vessel. Here there are also other photos, not concerning this incident. They are added simply for creation of atmosphere of event.

I would also like to point out that another eason the hoses where run out was the fact that the harpoon launcher had been broken into and the war heads exposed. We did not know if they would explode and the need for damage control needed. I have photos of the damage. Also we did not spend many months in dry dock for repairs. We went to Hifa isreal and the harpoons replaced and new life lines put on the missile deck. you did us a favor as the new rails where stainless steel. less work

The reason that the fire hoses where run out was that it was standard procedure to do that when we go to battle stations as we did after the collision. if the fire hoses are laid out then it makes that much less time to use them if we need to. My battlestation was in the aft missle launcher which is just forward of the aft gun mount and the door to that magizine is just behind the gun mount and below the aft missle launcher. So there was no fire.

The international law does not suppose infringement of air borders of the states even for not military flying machines.

USS Caron was sunk as a target after decommissioning and did not sink during this incident in 1988.

I would also like to point out that another eason the hoses where run out was the fact that the harpoon launcher had been broken into and the war heads exposed. We did not know if they would explode and the need for damage control needed. I have photos of the damage. Also we did not spend many months in dry dock for repairs. We went to Hifa isreal and the harpoons replaced and new life lines put on the missile deck. you did us a favor as the new rails where stainless steel. less work

I will take care of the block. The reason that the fire hoses where run out was that it was standard procedure to do that when we go to battle stations as we did after the collision. if the fire hoses are laid out then it makes that much less time to use them if we need to. My battlestation was in the aft missle launcher which is just forward of the aft gun mount and the door to that magizine is just behind the gun mount and below the aft missle launcher. So there was no fire.

I know that the fire on a deck was not. But fire hoses have been tightened in the ship. It has given the grounds to assume that ignition on lower decks was possible. I do not doubt that the former captain has far promoted on an service ladder. But since April, 1988 he was some time for diplomatic work in Paris.

American navy ships violated soviet territorial waters few times, stood there and made made spy actions. Finally soviet black sea commanders said "enough. Let's do something."

Problem was one not regulated by international laws case. Crimea peninsula has a few little narrow bays and amerians considered that territorial waters should be counted from shore of each bay. That meant that they allowed thsemlves to infiltrate very close t russian strategic navy areas and to do spying, reading of radioactivity, observing, etc.

Most countires,(ex.Norway) considered that territorial waters line in areas of narrow bays and fiord should be measured from two closest coast points at entering in bays or fiords. It means accoring to russian sea laws americans violated terrtitorial waters but americans, for their use tried to force their law, because they needed it for intelligence puproses.

By the way before violating soviet territorial waters, american ships also boldly violated and went through territoral waters of Bulgaria and Romania - countries of Warsaw pact on that time. They didn't react though, didn't have good navy.I know that american propaganda hides that from you and others zombies. Well what about Soviet aircraft flying into Canadian and American air space before we(The United States) ever did anything to instigate it? And to the people that think I like the federal government, I really don't like it, it is becoming over grown and too powerful. It's starting to be modeled after NAZI Germany(with the exception of the hatred towards other religions and races of course).

Any Soviet plane which has intruded in air space of the USA or Canada, would be brought down immediately .
Before occurrence ТU-95 (1957) in the USSR was not the planes, capable to reach the USA.
Only planes of the USA (U-2) dared to fly in air space of the USSR until one of them has not been brought down in 1960 by new rocket S-75.

WRONG!! The USSR sent aircraft into American airspace ALL THE TIME in the 1960s and '70s.
All we EVER did was escort them out of American airspace with fighters.
Americans don't shoot down aircraft just because they violate our airspace.

patsaretherealchumps, you are mistaken. Soviet TU-95s flied along air borders of the USA. Its carried out patrol-prospecting missions and also trained on a case of the beginning of nuclear war. The American interceptors accompanied soviets "bears" each time. If the Soviet bomber has intruded though on METER in air space of the USA it would be brought down IMMEDIATELY. The international law does not suppose infringement of air borders of the states even for not military flying machines.

It is you who is mistaken. I spent over ten years in the US Air Force. During that time, dozens of intercepts were made of our F-4s, F-16s, or F-15s escorting Russian aircraft out of US airspace.
I don't know what kind of idiotic propaganda you've been fed, but we DO NOT shoot down foreign aircraft who violate our airspace. We escort them out of our airspace. there are hundreds of photos online, showing this, as well. Maybe Russians shoot first and ask questions later, but not the US.

Western fighters were often sent to intercept Tu-95s as they performed their missions along the PERIPHERY
of NATO, US and Canadian AIRSPACE, often in VERY CLOSE formation.
PS SU AA defence and today RF forced down and will force down infringers of air borders only in default to proceed on compulsory landing.

Do some research. The Russians have been escorted out of US Airspace on numerous occaisions.
