The subways aren't sealed and have working ventilators in the tunnels to keep methane and other poisonous gases from building up.

These people would have NOTHING to bring fresh air in to them. They would end up with toxic levels of carbon dioxide in the air and very little oxygen. Remember the CD literature they had was from '57. They still believed "Duck and Cover" would work back then. To answer your other question, he's probably the main suspect because he acts the most suspicious.

okay i hear you on the duck and cover stuff, lol, but what i was getting at is these people are not used to dealing with a lack of space that people in crowded cities pay dearly for, and they could have easily crammed some more in people, had them sit still and talk little instead of turning them away.

That sounds fine until you have a bunch of people crammed in a small space thinking the end of the world is happening. They weren't even sure how long the rain would last. Now lock them in a basement, packed in like sardines, and watch the claustrophobic ones consume O2 and more than five times the rate of the calm ones. They might have had to be in there for days.

I wasn't going to spoil it for you, but watch the whole series before judging him (Hawkins), besides that you'll like it. You'd have to know someone who is really claustrophobic to understand how bad that would be. My mom is and she hyperventilates, paces, talks to try and distract herself (everything wrong when the O2 is running out).  It isn't about personal space, the crowding and enclosed space gives the perception of walls closing around you, like the guy who freaked out on the show.

When I was little (I'm 14) I saw this on tv at my friend's house. I didn't pay attention to it but like a year ago I was like "I want to watch that movie, so I was trying to find it on netflix.
