No, he's not kidding. The history of Christmas IS that it was an amalgam of European pagan winter solstice traditions. The early Church tried to get rid of them because they included excess drinking, eating and cavorting... and probably helped keep people alive in harsh winters. The early Church couldn't get rid of these traditions and decided to name them Feast of the Nativity. Even religious Christians agree the Bible mentions conditions when Christ was born, probably in the spring.

A.D. 336 is the thought to be the earliest year producing documentation of the church celebrating Christmas and before that the roman culture (and many others) celebrated the changing of the seasons i.e. winter solstice when Christianity spread into the known world it took over the winter solstice holiday and the birth of Jesus was celebrated in place. you might celebrate solstice but i celebrate Jesus. he is my reason for the season.
