I've been on this ship many times. The feeling of stepping on the most decorated ship of WWII is too much to handle. It makes me think what happened, who served, who died. And how it is still with us is amazing, school kids saving money to keep it from being scrapped. This ship will forever be in my heart.
i went on the uss nc it was so awesome im a world war 2 fanatic i loved it its so amazing that was in battle years ago then i was on it and sat where they ate and been on the lowest deck god theres nothing like it
My father, Lawrence Walley, served on the North Carolina throughout the Pacific campaign. I was lucky enough as a child to have been aboard the ship while it was in mothballs in Bayonne and again in my twenties where she rests now. My father loved that ship. One day I will get to see it again.
Consider my heart strings to have been tugged... Wilmington, I still love you and miss you... Because of the torpedo hit, the Showboat missed the battleship on battleship battle known as Guadalcanal II. In that battle, it was the North Carolina's sister ship, the USS Washington that was the star. The Washington pummeled the Japanese battleship Kirishima in just a few short minutes. This was after the Kirishima and some cruisers started to get the better of the USS South Dakota.
The Battle of Savo Island would have gone a lot differently if the North Carolina had been there with her 16 inch guns and SG radar. Shortly thereafter, the NC caught a bit of bad luck, it was miles away from the USS Wasp when a submarine torpedo meant for the Wasp hit the North Carolina. The torpedo knocked it out of the Guadalcanal campaign.
Fast battleships had their place in the overall scheme of the war's technological evolution, however; and particularly, the Pacific theatre saw a dramatic change as the emphasis by all navies shifted from battleships and "gun duels" to aircraft carrier born bombers, dive bombers, and fighter/attack planes. Still, the "North Carolina" is a magnificent monument to all who served on her.

@Nick22pr different era, its like comparing a modern big rig to one from all those decades ago. Thing is I'd put money on the Show Boat to survive damage these new cruisers would buckle under.
I lived across the river from this great monument when I was little, and I remeber hearing the sound and light show at night. This was a mighty ship. I always loved touring her.
Myself and my family would not exist if the integrity of this vessel and her crew would have failed. I was reared on tales of the South Pacific and this ship as a kid. Thanks for posting this.
@HaamSammich I just get very, very bored with people who have no consideration for anyone else. Particularly those who have such a limited vocabulary and so few communication skills that they have to resort to some sort of offensive comment to get their thought across. Your response illustrates that, again. Also, I am a 65 year old grandfather, father and husband. I'm pretty sure that would disqualify me from being as you discribed. A negaive comment doesn't mean one is being whiny.
Must have been an awesome feeling for the WW2 generation to see this mighty ship in Hawaii, just days after the Midway battle.
Arguably she provided critical support for the remaining operational carriers in the pacific in the important early battles of the war, until more and more warships could alleviate the pressure when they finished building, around 1943.
So judging by operational history, the Iowas weren't quite as important as the North Carolina or South Dakota.
I've visited the Show Boat twice in my life and it's an incredible feeling. That moutain of steel has a soul and it got it from the all the fighting men who served on her during those days of hell. If you've never visted her in Wilmington, you won't know what I'm talk about. It's incredible that they built such a complex and large peice of machinery in the short time they did. That in it self is a testimony of the greatness of America during that time too. God bless all our warriors.

@AmericanThunder I agree with you there, my favourite US battleship were the Iowa class, very graceful looking ships, but the North Carolina class were superb as well, tremendous video.

@Goodspittin A fine ship in every respect. I'm Scottish (UK) and we did not even preserve one of our battleships, which was a shame, at least the United States preserved some of theirs. It's debatable if a battleship has a use today, i do think they could be armed with missiles and upgraded, but i suppose it comes down to money.....the aircraft carrier seems to be the capital ship now.

The USS North Carolina was one of many brave ships that served this country proudly in WWII. She will always have a special place in my heart because my father served aboard her for almost 3 years during the Pacific campaign. He has passed, but the stories he began telling me as a child of being on board during the war will forever be a part of me. I still have many things that were his during the war including a dog tag, a uniform, and a diary he kept. All so priceless.
I have visited the "Show Boat" twice and she is truely a majestic vessel. It's amazing to consider what her and her crew went thru during those years in WWII.
Recently there has been a lot of news about how Hollywood is running out of fresh ideas or how they are always making remakes that never seem to have the impact that the original movie did. Why not do a movie based on real history like the story this battleship has to tell. It worked for "Saving Private Ryan" & "Band of Brothers."
I think we should bring her back. At her to the Navy roaster let her go hunting for pirates. Give her all the bells and whistle that the Navy can give today and let her of her lines. Giver her a few battle cruisers and destroyers. Make her engine so she can stay out to sea for years. Come back I'm sure the pirates wouldn't be able to attack.
@DoveBoxers Park her just in international waters outside Somalia. An let mission be destruction. The pirates in the olden days didn't get any consideration. If they where found to be involved in piracy. They'd be strung up in the gallows. You could skip that by blasting their 20 foot boats with an accurate shot from the 9 16" guns.
@hannigan06 They'd have to remanufacture the parts... she had her guns' mechanical computer controls stripped to go to the Jersey back in the 80s when I was in the Navy..... but not impossible to do I guess.... but yeah... it would be like the Sea Shepards with teeth!
@DoveBoxers Well If I had unlimited amount of cash. I'd suit her back up and live on it myself. No one owns their own private battle ship. Mercenary sailors go rent yourself out to any countries Navy. That would be fun to see.
@hannigan06 Yeah , that'd be very sensible . Know how many dollars it costs to fire just one round ?
If you want to beat the pirates then you have to do it by organising all traffic into convoys , or at least get them into agreed sea-lanes , and then use something like Cobra helicopter gunships operating from something like your reserve Marines " Carriers " Iwo jima class , to blow the baddies away .
Battleships would be like using an M1 Abrams to deal with a roach infestation .
Don't assume all Americans are like the few jackasses that are spamming those boards. Some of us, despite the sometimes shaky relationship our two countries have, recognize that without the heroics and sacrifice of Russian soldiers, WW2 would have been A LOT different in the European Front than it was.
Nice. I don't think that the french will ever forget the suicidal american&english attack on d-day. Not after having made a law that every village must have a war memorial, every department a cross with "aux martyrs du 6 juin", a cross on 1 in 20 mountains, and a whole bunch of other stuff.
@baltic1284 True but the Showboat saw a lot more action. Its to bad that both were sold as scrap at the same time (about) but the Carolina was saved fom the yards by the dimes of the state school kids.
Just got back from Wilmington N.C. and got to visit the Battleship North Carolina! What a beautiful ship and emotional experience! Those 16" guns are huge! Wish I could hear them fire! :) I love the "smell" of that ship. She is in great shape and I'm so proud that the United States still has these babies at our disposal to view. WOW! :D
I live in South Carolina. We've got the the carrier Yorktown in Charleston, along with the Balao class sub Clamagore and the Destroyer Laffey. Impressive, somewhat yes. However, it never fails, every time i'm up in North Carolina and pass by where the USS North Carolina sits, WOW. Breathtaking every time. The size, and the beauty is overwhelming. It almost looks as if she's just temporarily in dock and waiting upon assignment from navy brass.
I was invited to the launching of this wonderful ship on June 13th. 1940 at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. I was 8 years old at the time, but even at this young age I sort of knew that this was an historic day. I toured her in 2004 where she's drydocked in Wilmington, North Carolina. Wow, what a great feeling!
@amf1932 I envy you, course I was only 4 and probably would have just ignored the event to look at the water LOL. But an 8 year old is old enough to have their imagination filled with the wonder of that great ship. I've toured the showboat dozens of times and still feel like a kid when I walk on board.
@Dogmeat1950 the H-class battleship were in first plans just studies and in early stage. The H-44 class would have been the largest ship and was the largest ship ever planned with 20inch cannons, it also would have carried the latest state of the art technology this ship would have ripped the IOWA class in millions of pieces. But the plans were in early stage and many changes were planned as well since during the war the most modern things were developed by the Germans, AA-missiles for example
I saw this ship back in 2007 when I was at recruiting school at Ft. Jackson, SC. I drove up there on memorial day weekend to see it. I have to say it is a big ass ship, but I don't see how 2,300 people fit on it. Seeing those guns up close was quite humbling. The biggest round I ever put down range was 25 mm, and I thought I was hot shit then, but when I saw those 16 inch guns, I almost had to hang my head and cry. That was a time when the military didn't fuck around.
@HermitintheRain No she was not at The Battle Of Lete Gulf, She went on a long overhaul at the Puget Sound Yard in Washington State and did not return to the Pacfic until November 5 1944. So in effect, she [The North Carolina] just missed it !
Thank God for the generation of Heros the United States had during WW2, they did extraordinary things with the machines made for fighting war. Many Men and Women went down with those machines. Rest in Peace Heros, and Thank You !!!!
@rubbing2001 served on the Battleship Missouri when she was re-comd in the 1980's. I've also been onboard the N.C for a tour. These ships were builtso well. Whay yu said is so true. The men and women that built these machines were amazing. Works of art!
@rubbing2001 Absolutely. They were truly a great generation! I am fortunate to live be a volunteer, living 1 hour away, for the past 10+ years and have any many opportunities to show people this glorious ship, tell her history, meet the original crew members, and assist in her restoration and upkeep. She is a wonderful icon to all that is good about our nation, her people, and the US Navy.
@Contrajoe When I was in the Army I had come across a few articles indicating that with the advances in technology, that the key ship of interest for the Navy was becoming the further development of the destroyers. There were reports indicating work and experimentation with anti-radar detection similar to the stealth bomber and other high tech features geared towards the destroyer class ships.
Excellent! I saw BB-55 in Wilmington, NC about 5-6 yars ago. USS North Carolina is a sight to behold!! I sure am glad the USA had battleships like BB-55!!
I only wish every battleship that survived WW2 could have been saved as a memorial. I sure do wish BB-48 could have been saved!!
Hello everyone. I have banned kursk1111111111, ...Again. That's three times I think, haha. He will be back though ... Notice all the 1's? I understand the pride he has in his own country and have no problem with that. The problem is when he goes after others, trying to tear them down in order to prop his own position up.
I try my very best not to delete posts or ban people. I truly feel everyone is entitled to an opinion. Thanks to everyone though for the defense :-)
@MisterCyber1: He was ripping on the Showboat and America a bit too much. You know, over the top comments. I try really hard not to get involved in petty disagreements like that. But sometimes, some people, like 'kursk', let their mouths overload their a**.
My advice to 'kursk' would be this: "It's better to remain silent and have folks 'think' you are stupid, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt".
@ChattanoogaInternet If "Kursk####" is going through the trouble of making new youtube accounts just to come here and visit the Show Boat, he must feel really threatened by such an awesome warship. That he would invest such time in his efforts. Almost gives you that warm fuzzy feeling inside, thinking about that, huh?
The Show Boat IS a symbol of American exceptional-ism, and an expression of not only our military might, but of our artistic talent as well, for she is both deadly and beautiful.
@kursk1111111111 You should not dishonor the NC or any who served!. My father served on the NC. I know stories you do not obviously. Chill.. and do not be disrespectful to any.
@songoku64 A number of reasons. First and foremost, they're too slow and big and too easy of targets for aircraft bombers. 2nd, we can't realistically make the guns big enough to compete with the damage of our destroyer and cruiser based missile systems, and we will never be able to get the range out of artillery, plus missile systems are lighter,, take up less space, are more accurate. I agree, though. I love the big battleships. But technology moved ahead of battleship's limits.
i visit this great battle ship everytime on my wedding anniversary with my wife . And cant help be proud of the History that was made in the very ship. you do get some wierd feelings that you are not alone on it though . scary some times .
@ormondsjar1 i went to this battleship when i was about 11 years old and it was the greatest thing ive ever seen except for the uss yorktown in charleston south carolina.
It's a shame all of the US battleships were not preserved at the end or WW2. It sure would have been nice to have been able to see the ships that helped win WW2.
Check out the Battleship Cover in Fall River Ma. There are several warships including the fully functional USS Massachusetts. You could spend 5 hours or more.
@FunteX - Regarding being overdone - while I am sure that no offense was intended, please remember that thousands of young men served on the ship and made tremendous sacrifices for not just the US but those small countries which she helped to free. @ChattanoogaInternet - Thanks for this beautifully done production. A couple of generations away from the period, it is hard to get to see the ships in action. IMO not at all overdone when you consider the hardships endured by those who served.
I just love those archive photos and clips... those ships were magnificent! Such a power, scale, masterpieces of engeniering. Majestic titans of oceans...
Is it overdone? and\ stereotypical? NO! War is never good! But if there was a generation who rose against evil, even in their gray world, this is one. No, this is a good video. Don't apologize for it! I speak as one who leans toward pacifism! No.. sometimes, God have mercy.. this is must and does happen! That was a great generation! With many faults... but yet a great generation. May God show us how we can be a great generation too.
When i was a kid my mother took me to see that battleship.I was about 8 or 9 i was very impressed with her size and cannons. And her ammo shells was bigger than me.I am very pround of the USS North Carolina and her crew. While i was on her deck i rember the war stories my unle had told me.You see he joined the navy and served during ww2.I tolded him i hope to have courage like that someday.
I've been on this ship many times. The feeling of stepping on the most decorated ship of WWII is too much to handle. It makes me think what happened, who served, who died.

Come back I'm sure the pirates wouldn't be able to attack.
hannigan06 1 year ago
@hannigan06 I've thought the same thing for the last 30 years every time I cross the bridge and look down towards her.
DoveBoxers 1 year ago
@DoveBoxers Park her just in international waters outside Somalia. An let mission be destruction. The pirates in the olden days didn't get any consideration. If they where found to be involved in piracy. They'd be strung up in the gallows. You could skip that by blasting their 20 foot boats with an accurate shot from the 9 16" guns.
hannigan06 1 year ago
@hannigan06 They'd have to remanufacture the parts... she had her guns' mechanical computer controls stripped to go to the Jersey back in the 80s when I was in the Navy..... but not impossible to do I guess.... but yeah... it would be like the Sea Shepards with teeth!
DoveBoxers 1 year ago
@DoveBoxers Well If I had unlimited amount of cash. I'd suit her back up and live on it myself. No one owns their own private battle ship. Mercenary sailors go rent yourself out to any countries Navy. That would be fun to see.
hannigan06 1 year ago
@hannigan06 Yeah , that'd be very sensible . Know how many dollars it costs to fire just one round ?
If you want to beat the pirates then you have to do it by organising all traffic into convoys , or at least get them into agreed sea-lanes , and then use something like Cobra helicopter gunships operating from something like your reserve Marines " Carriers " Iwo jima class , to blow the baddies away .
Battleships would be like using an M1 Abrams to deal with a roach infestation .
Silly man .

Wow, what a great feeling!
amf1932 1 year ago
@amf1932 I envy you, course I was only 4 and probably would have just ignored the event to look at the water LOL. But an 8 year old is old enough to have their imagination filled with the wonder of that great ship. I've toured the showboat dozens of times and still feel like a kid when I walk on board.

@god4488 um the Iwo was better then the thought of German h-44 ship hell look at the Montana lol. Big battleship rofl.
Dogmeat1950 1 year ago

Contrajoe 1 year ago
@Contrajoe When I was in the Army I had come across a few articles indicating that with the advances in technology, that the key ship of interest for the Navy was becoming the further development of the destroyers. There were reports indicating work and experimentation with anti-radar detection similar to the stealth bomber and other high tech features geared towards the destroyer class ships.

I try my very best not to delete posts or ban people. I truly feel everyone is entitled to an opinion. Thanks to everyone though for the defense :-)

@ChattanoogaInternet What did he post?
MisterCyber1 1 year ago
@MisterCyber1: He was ripping on the Showboat and America a bit too much. You know, over the top comments. I try really hard not to get involved in petty disagreements like that. But sometimes, some people, like 'kursk', let their mouths overload their a**.
My advice to 'kursk' would be this: "It's better to remain silent and have folks 'think' you are stupid, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt".
ChattanoogaInternet 1 year ago 5
@ChattanoogaInternet If "Kursk####" is going through the trouble of making new youtube accounts just to come here and visit the Show Boat, he must feel really threatened by such an awesome warship. That he would invest such time in his efforts. Almost gives you that warm fuzzy feeling inside, thinking about that, huh?
The Show Boat IS a symbol of American exceptional-ism, and an expression of not only our military might, but of our artistic talent as well, for she is both deadly and beautiful.

I wis we still used them i wouldve loved to deploy on these big gun battleships. I just dont understand why we dont use them
songoku64 1 year ago
@songoku64 A number of reasons. First and foremost, they're too slow and big and too easy of targets for aircraft bombers. 2nd, we can't realistically make the guns big enough to compete with the damage of our destroyer and cruiser based missile systems, and we will never be able to get the range out of artillery, plus missile systems are lighter,, take up less space, are more accurate. I agree, though. I love the big battleships. But technology moved ahead of battleship's limits.
