fact is also that the Andes, the largest mountain chain in the world is also extremely geologically active. They have frequent earthquakes there. So the mountains are not firmly fixed at all!

common... The verse could just as well be a refrence to the mountains being the stakes that hold up the sky as the stakes that holds up the canvas roof of a tent... Fact is you have to extrapolate a great deal on the idea of mountains to see them as pegs at all. It would be more correct using ancient terms to see them as stones holding in place a flat canvas on the ground. But this description is not in the quran, is it?

Let's compare two regions on earth: my country, the Netherlands, well known for it's

complete lack of mountains of any kind (higest hill: 300 meters above sea level) and Japan, lots of large mountainous islands.

Now, the largest earthquake in the last 20 years in the Netherlands was a 5.8. The largest in Japan...

I'm trying to refute that the amount of mountains in a certain region and the amount of earthquakes in that region have a reverse correlation (= when there are more mountains, there are less earthquakes).

Mountains look the same underground as above ground. I don't know what 'awtad' is. Google images gave me some poles sticking out of a wall (unlike mountains) and some upside-down cones (like mountains) which get thicker in the middle (unlike mountains).

The fact that this was written in the 7th century when conceptions of the nature of the world did not include continental drift or plate techtonics (as clearly stated in the end of this video) should suggest that this is a prime example of isogesis. That means not only that for the past thousand years it was understood differently, but could imply the author's intent was not plate techtonics. An exegetical anaylsis would have been more useful here to determine the author's intended meaning.
