i watch caps games and i'm not denying he's a good player. but to claim that this move makes him MVP is ridiculous. and still, the fact that he did this two other times really doesn't say much. OV needs to bring that kind of stuff to EVERY GAME. i've seen him play and he really isn't all that impressive outside of his offensive game. on 3-8-09 against pitt he coasted toward the blue line while crosby and guerin had a 2 on 1 and crosby scored. he shouldnt be praised for doing what he should

then i call "BS" that you "watch caps games all the time." the pitt example is the same one you've found elsewhere on the internet (pensblog, pensburgh, etc). all of whom neglect to show ovechkin getting his stick and glove caught in the glass on that play. it was a freak incident, and the guy gets blasted everywhere for not hustling back. btw, those gagne and st louis examples....BOTH are from the LAST TWO WEEKS of the season! he does this regularly. he is by definition a complete player.

i was at the pitt game, idiot. he got his glove caught and freed it as sid and guerin started their rush. he could have skated back hard but he didn't.

if he does this regularly, then why has his defensive game been criticized so long? it's because he isn't defensive. not a bad thing, but that just means he isn't complete. malkin, however, is since he leads the league in takeaways and has a sick backcheck. ovechkin isn't nearly as gifted defensively so i see him as a less complete player

i agree with superfly, ovechkin does his part on defence more than anyone gives him credit for, and that is because everyone is so amazed at his offence and forget the fact that he is out there doing his part on defence. u have been playing video games to much buddy it is different in real life

all I'm saying is that this one play does not make OV anymore MVP worthy than he already is (though i think because Malkin is better than him defensively, he has a bit of an edge).  if his defense was as prevalent as you say it is, then why aren't we hearing more about it? heck, even you have to admit that most anything OV does, there's an article about it.

his defense is praised plenty. his critics on the internet are seizing on it; not players/coaches/MSM. the guy is a LW, and a goal scorer. malkin is a C and a distributor. they have two different roles. if you want to talk about malkin's takeaways, i'll counter with ovechkin's hits. he's a goal scorer and a forechecker first. when he's in position to actually make the play on backcheck, he does. every time. give me the guy with more PPG, 20 more goals and 150 more hits.

ovechkin also leads malkin in TOI/G. and in case you weren't aware, all points aren't equal. 2 assists for every goal scored. if you actually think their offensive production is equivalent when AO has scored 21 more goals and taken 238 more shots...well, i can't help you. ovechkin completely controls the pace of the game every time he's on the ice. malkin is a superstar and i wish he were on the caps, but AO remains in a class of his own.
