Guys, I seriously doubt you'd be running away until the last minute back then. Sure, now that you know wtf happens when the ocean recedes like that, you know it's time to run.
Personally, I would have stood a long while too, thinking "olol WTF" - AND THEN run after seeing that ship getting devoured by the waves. If I were there at that tragic day, however.
@JFguitar22 surfing waves are bigger but they dont come in groung, tsunami waves are big and they come by hundreds with an amazing force, its the ocean coming into the land basically
bill_788: "The powerful earthquake that unleashed a devastating tsunami Friday appears to have moved the main island of Japan by 8 feet (2.4 meters) and shifted the Earth on its axis."
People didn't run because the wave didn't "look" threateningly high at first...they probably thought it would disperse at the shoreline. The first warning sign (if you are ever on the shore) is when you start to see a large amount of the sea retreating and can see quite a bit of the sea floor. These people didn't know until the wave was almost on top of them!
If you listen to the German they don't know what it is and are wondering what is happening. She asks if a problem and he say Na, though then questions.
@miamoore66879 Most people were not aware that it was a tsunami to begin with. Don't forget that before the tsunami occurred, all the water receded into the ocean so people went out onto the sand, and little children played. The problem with a tsunami is that the signs of there being one are often very subtle, and obviously to a German tourist who has no experience with tsunamis, you can't really judge their decisions.
There are bigger waves here in Australia that are not tsunamis.
@miamoore66879 now because of this tsunami in 2004- the idea of what a tsunami would even look like is on our minds, so of course I agree, NOW I'd get the hell outta there! but if I had never even seen one, I'd just think at the time that it was just a big wave that would crash at any point.....maybe would come in a bit further than the others, but not turn into the devastating tsunami which did occur.....
Look at youtube video: Khao Lak Tsunami, there you have the whole video of 10 min, and there you see that two minutes later the guy took his wife and two small children and ran the hell on a hill and .... survived. At the end he looked down the hill and started crying. a moving movie.
It's hard to imagine that someone could view such destruction as was shown in the video posted, and then be so cruel as to leave insensitive, rude or even racist comments of ANY kind as a result!! (well, I CAN believe it, I just wish I didn't have to) Makes believing in your fellow man difficult, even in situations where the rest of the people involved come together in ways they never dreamed possible... to their benefit. Only faith in Jesus allows us to understand otherwise unfathomable events.
@jbenefiel304 You had me going until that bit about Jesus. I'm a Christian, but I don't think that bringing religion into it helped your point in the slightest. Just my opinion.
don't believe that you have to have faith in the jesus to understand.
I wish more people were keen to what happens when the tide goes that far out into the ocean. A lot of people lost their lives but I am sure that from now on more people will know what is impending.
he was asking the whole time: what is that? I would be asking myself the same thing in that situation... but, sincerely, I would be running away at the same time!!! Those huge waves looked really scary!
. Very sad. He wasn't really even running himself and you could hear a Baby in the background. The footage is indespensible to researchers-I believe it shows how the water hits the shelf as it approaches - you can see huge plumes of water crashing upward - the color change is defined. How those on shore just stood there as they saw the boats capsized is beyond me-no noise, screaming-othing=mesmerized in watching something they were never meant to see. ////
I wonder if anyone survived from that group of really unknowing people-"what is that :" sounds the same in German as in English! How terribly sad - it took triple the time that it took in other areas to approach shore (3+ minutes) but was far larger than ones that destroyed everything - I kinda doubt anyone made it through-maybe they found this camera in wreckage and little by little they developed all the film they could find that people took before dying. ////
It is pure human curiousity to see hwat is happening, humans are intreeged by nature and to see a wave so big for some reasons cause ppl to go into a trance and just watch it until it gets to close and they go "oh shit..." and bam, they're dead.
I know I would probably go to a shore line if a Tsunami was in sight miles away, but once it got maybe i don't know 2 kilometres close to the shoreline I would sprit my fucking legs out to get to a high building.
Biggest mistake people make.. is to go to the beach to film what's going on. They see the tides have gone WAY out and wonder what's happening.. it's the tell tale sign a Tsunami is coming and you should move it!! Not stand around, though a lot of people don't know this fact. They're intrigued with the low water levels and it traps them. And by the way, you won't out run the wave, even if you think you can.
It's astounding to watch. The guy filming can no doubt see that the water is coming with great force, it is simple common sense that it's not going to just stop where it was before. I can understand the human curiosity to go down to look where they wouldn't normally have the chance to view but first sight of that water coming in makes it clear it's time to run for the hills.
They're wondering what that is because the perspective of that side of the tsunami is barely seen on footage. I bet you'd be like wth is that and hang out there on the beach as well.
People probably didnt run because they dont really experience tsunamis like that and cant possibly know the signs. For example, the camera man. Probably European. i dont think Tsunamis are quite that common over there. So its not fair to call some1 stupid
dont blame the ppl for just standing there..i mean i would run or sumthin just because of the water running back in the sea.they thought i was anything but a tsunami.thats not right just there. to me wat hurts me is that kids are at the beach you know? and babies..no chance

its beucz the tsunami for it to become a way(any wave not just tsunami)ithas to build the wave by taking in water and with a tsunami its basically a giant wave so that means major amounts of water taken up by the wave thats why

K38rescue, Could you tell us what happened to the guy and his family who filmed this video! It looks like they start to run right at the end, would like to think they were ok.
The father was on German television a couple weeks later! Most amazing thing? The casualties were surprisingly(fortunate)not that high. To my knowledge the family is OK, do not worrie.
Cheers buddies, take it easy, love and peace to the world and thanks for the concerns, thank you.
yeah u can an ocean on the moving continential plates will obvoisly a "black spot" well not in a way there will be evry 2 seconds but it ius more likely and yes i also feel sorry 4 victims :(

Cheers buddies, take it easy, love and peace to the world and thanks for the concerns, thank you.

it's difficult to hold the camera straight when you're nervous due to the fact that your odds for survival are slim.

If the video has been longer, insted of you saying,'run' you'd be saying ,"swim"
