the thruth is there are better versions of this play, but this one is good enough to watch for once.... look for the 1970 version with Anthony Hopkins anh Eileen Atkins!!
@IlviraIA Thank you for the precious information. Spassiba bolshoye ! Sorry I don't have the cyrillic characters on my present keyboard. I love all the Chekhov plays, I saw The Cherry Orchard last week in my hometown. Very moving, Chekhov is my hero.
I'm playing Anfisa in my College's production. But the characters of Anfisa and CheButykin have been merged together for me because we had more girls than boys and we are doing the play for finals week!!!!
Naturalism? How is there anything remotely natural or realistic about this? Its pretty rigid, i cant really see any real behavior from the actors, but maybe thats what the director wanted.
@dinosaurjr And the books don't work either! Look,Chekhov belongs at or near the head of the "Overrated Masters" list. For the life of me I cannot understand why EVERYONE does not adopt Tolstoy's view of this NON-playwright foisting these dialogue exercises on an unsuspecting public--who hated them, by the way. Theatre is a study in human behavior and if there's anything Chekhov characters WON'T do, it's ANYTHING! Instead, they discuss the prospect of doing things. Tolstoy naled it viz. Chekhov!
@dantean Tolstoy was talking about some of his other contemporaries, not Chekhov. He had a great appreciation for Chekhov's work. What he hated was when people spent 3 pages describer scenery. When Chekhov died Tolstoy wrote that Chekhov was his "superior in the art of writing". Which may have been modesty talking, but either way it's clear he held his writing in great esteem.
I didn't know I could see such a brilliant work for non-Russian director and actors;
However, there are some details left behind director's attention, like Masha is reading the line from Pushkine which is supposed to be on the first page of book, and music at the end - it was written dozen years later.
It says so in the script. Masha is mourning her father, as it is the anniversary of their father's death, Irina is in white celebrating her saint's day and Olga is caught in the middle of it all wearing her school mistres uniform. This production missed all of that tension.
An epic production that I was honored to be the lighting designer for at the Old Vic. Glorious days!

It seems to me the house doesn't look very russian. I've been to Russian many times in all types of homes and never saw one like this one here.

@monichat You probably saw the soviet time and style buildings and apartments .they're incomparable with those in the beginning of 20th cent.
Three sisters live in mansion, so the movie shows it almost perfect, close to reality, imho

i love this play, but i don't like how this has captured Chekhov's work. It misses a lot of the understatement, which is one of his main devises
screamorox 2 years ago
I agree. I dont think this really works with his naturalistic style.

Yeh we're making the same point.
The rigid and unbelieable acting doesnt fit in with chekhov's naturalistic style.

@spacecowboy95 english people always taint everything, the world and even russian plays. This is shit! dont believe anyone here

Tht opening scene may have been better used in an adaptation of ibsen's "The Doll's House".
Right, that's my AS drama revision done.

phenomenal play - but a very wooden staged and stuffy account here. No life in it at all. Love the house though.
