Central Hardware used to be in Memphis --- they had a few stores in the city; I live not too far from the one that was on Elvis Presley Blvd --- it's an abandoned building now, and had been for a few years. Now Lowe's and Home Depots are scattered all over Memphis -- and it's suburbs.
I worked there "back in the day"...I remember my dad would call the employees "Orange coated idiots", while I was working there. I'm out here looking today trying to jar my memory, looking for a gal I once worked there with, Joyce something or other. Thought this might help me, so far, no luck. From MO
We had one here in Florence, KY back in the day.... It is now home to HH Gregg and Home Goods. I still see a lot of "Central Park" Lawnmowers out there runnin.
Used to work at the Central hardware located in Indianapolis (us31).1984-1990 going thru highschool/college...Great part time job....Good memories.....
Pretty much died. Think of Lowe's or Home Depot in St Louis in the 80's, and that was pretty much Central Hardware- I miss those home shows they did back in the 80's, with all those freebees!!
I remember the one in Memphis on Winchester and just down the street was Home Quarters. My dad and grandfather got their stuff there for hardware and fixing up things. Then they went out of business and Lowes and Home Depot moved in to the city. Talk about back in the day.
It's so nostalgic to me! I just finished watching an old National commercial and THIS was in the recommended videos. What's so coincidental is that there use to be a National and a Central Hardware right next door to each other off of Page Ave. and Deilman Ave. in my neighborhood! *buys a lottery ticket*
I remember going there tp the one on US 31 in Indianapolis south side. From 1975 to 1991-2. When I was real little in the late 70's I referred to it as simpy "the wood store". LOL Old memories. It was a favorite place of mine along with hook's drugs, IGA food mart etc.
I feel that we are in the Matrix and everything is just bland, sterile, and uninteresting compared to the old days. DAMN GLOBALISM
I remember Central Hardware when I was a kid in the 90s. Whenever my dad and I went there, I would always play with the garage door openers. Now, a Borders sits in its place.
I remember Central Hardware when I lived in Indianapolis in the late 1980's and early 1990's. It was located on US 31 South just south of Southport Rd and north of Stop 11. We also had Builder's Square in that same vicinity and a Furrow that used to be on Brookville Rd. I don't believe any of these companies are in business today. Now it's all Lowes and maybe Home Depot. Wow have times changed.
my wife and i met at central hardware when we where kids. we been together 20 years!! we didn't make any money working there but we did find each other!! and we still have a lot a laughs about it.
I remember this store! They used to have locations in Memphis back in the pre-Home Depot days. We used to do all of our "hardware" shopping at this store before Home Quarters Warehouse opened up.
Georgesville Rd. is a post office, Cleveland Ave. is a medical center (across from Home Depot), Eastland is a junk appliance store. The only store with good retail is on Bethel Rd. where Micro Center now is.
@columbusmediatalk Did Ohio also get Tinker Shows, or was that a St Louis only thing? When they were still around we got those yearly at the convention center. They'd have home improvement demos and stuff- as well as a bag of swag. I still have a t-shirt from 1987's and a flashlight from 1988's, both with Mr Tinker on it- as well as Central Hardware's emblem.
The old Central Hardware building on W 38th St in Indianapolis is now a church.

Did they have Central Hardware in Columbus, OH? I thought it was a St. Louis, MO thing since that where it was headquartered.
ajwrangler1977 4 years ago
Yep, they had 4 stores, 3 of which must have been crappy locations since there these locations aren't inhabited by any retail chains anymore.
columbusmediatalk 4 years ago
WOW! I did not know they were so spread out. Where were the Columbus locations?
