I took your advice and looked up some of the videos from "There's no place like home". Absolutely amazing. I will be purchasing that dvd tomorrow. I formaly eat all my words. Steve has got it all back. The look the energy and most imprtantly, the voice. My hat goes off to him. That is not an easy thing to do. Respect level just shot way way up. Thats my Kansas :)
I sure read a lot of comments about about how over the hill these guys are.
I really don't hear it.
For a live performance this is not too bad at all, and I remember them when they were one of the top acts in the country, if not the world. Admittedly, Steve looks a bit bazaar at times and his voice is strained at a point or two, but all in all I'd say good job guys. I've seen many a group at the very top of their game that couldn't do it live nearly this well.
amazing song ...altogether they play great...anyone whos seen them live, when they trade off instruments will agree.....great musicians, although i will agree that the dope problem hurt steve......he doesn't even look the same anymore.
think if anyone would ahve worn out it would ahve been Phil Ehart Yert the glue to Kansas has and always will be Phil and Rich Williams; The 'eyepatch' guy: Kerry Livgrens guitar brother, You can critique but in 2011 they still reproduce music no other band created.
Probably my favorite song Kansas every did that had alot of meaning to me. Would like to see the singer just sing the song. I know live is live but the vocals are such a key ingredient in this song that it has to coincide with the music and back up vocals for it to really breathe. Love his energy though.
Even as bad as they look in this video and not sounding like they usually do, they still blow away a lot of bands very talented group of guys . Still playing today and sound awsome!!
the "Steve's on Dope" thing is getting pretty old. Steve will be the 1st to tell you he was not healthy during this time... this was 1992 and it's amazing what 13-14 years of sobriety have done for this man. He is very humbled and gives 110% now days. He sounds great for almost 60 years old. Check out the 2009 live recording from Topeka Kansas, "There's Know Place Like Home"
@normfromal another good example on how steve improved is the 2002 Device VOICE DRUM concert dvd. Definetly scope that one out its a good show, and Robbie is on violin in that show! David Ragsdale is an AMAZING violinist but dont forget robbie, he was a good violinist but an amazing singer!
Kansas was my favorite band, no question- in their heyday. This was painful to watch indeed.. It looks like a terrible cabaret version with bored studio pros propping up the washed-up gravy trainwreck long enough to get paid for another week.
I'm glad Steve got out of this awful phase of his life alive- He and the Kansas legacy deserve better.
Man...I am so dissapointed with Steve. He sounds like crap and looks like he's freaked out on drugs! The reast of band looks they are pissed off and I bet it's because of him. :( Excellent band live......but with Steve singing ( which is garbage live compared to the studio) it just brings the band down.
@nopast68 I think his voice in this live is hardly compromised by drugs and all that crap.. but he is now better.. (I think about the device drum live in 2002 eg.).. Steve will always be for me one of the best (if not THE best) voices in rock history
I'm glad these guys are still around, although it is hard for me to see them growing old. I practically worshipped this kind of music in the days of my youth. Much of Kansas caused me to search my own soul for the truth. I believe like Kerry, that I have found what I was looking for back in October of 1982. No longer woven in a fantasty being unable to make it through "The Wall". Will see Kansas, Styx and Foreigner in a couple weeks.
Saw Kansas early on in their tour, months before this video was shot. Steve's voice was as awesome as ever. Try singing what he does for the number of concerts he sings. THEN, dod a concert for the video camera. This should have filmed EARLY, not late, during that tour. (Kerry actually performed with the band the night I saw them, too.)
As far as Steve jumping that night, he always did do that. He just did extra for the camera.
Saw these guys in 1981 and again in 1983 I think it was and even though I still like them...believe me...this is NOT what they sounded like live back then. Was unbelievable.
It looks like he's thinking "Here we are, spending all of our money on this video at the famed whisky a go go, and our lead singer is coked out and jumping around like a mad man.
Once apawn a time I was high & scarey too. Once apawn a time, I saw this real time '77. Bought tickets. Did the drive. Watched these guy Jam. Chicago, Ampitheater, One of the best shows I ever saw. Great jam,
Steve, I am very glad you conquered drug & alchol addictioin. God helped you to get out of all that mess. I'll keep you, family and band in prayer! Love you, you're all awesome!
Say what you want about this performance but , even with Steve all coked up, they sounded great and sound even better today. Kansas has always had some of the best musically talented musicians in one band ever. Also believe their music was over the top of most peoples heads. BTW Phil Ehardt.....................best drummer EVER !
of course everybody sounds great except Steve who loves doing the William Shatner version on the vocals....jeez and he must have got that jacket in the kids section at Kmart
Walsh actualy used to sing the high harmony on this song and Robbie sang the low. But Walsh can still hit the high notes. Click on other versions of this song in the last decade
Yes, He blew this song, as the rest of the band looks as though they really tried to cover...What a shame. This group Rocks and always be one of my favorites of all time!
the denim half-jacket must go. i wanna see big guy with the eye-patch dive into the crowd :) Actually, I love Kansas & got to see them live at the Dixon May Fair circa 1999
Isn't their main lead singer the piano player? Is that the guy in this video? What happened to Robby Steinhart? I see no big bushy haired violinist! I'm so confused!
This is your brain on drugs!(Remember that commercial?) This is a real life example! Yes, that is the guy in this video! Scary isn't it?! Thank God he cleaned his act up and is still kicking ass 16 years later! The "bushy haired violinist" left the band came back for 9 years and left the band again in 2006!He was looking a little worn out at the end and I hope he's getting a well deserved rest! We all miss him very much! Hope all is well Robbie!!!
Coullion43....what you are seeing here is a shell of what Steve Walsh used to be. It is sad to see this performance. Watch Kansas on Don Kirschner's show on YouTube - Icarus from sometime in 1974 or 75. That is the lead singer that Kansas fans know and love.
There comes a time in a bands life when they must hang it up. Sadly it is time. Kansas has and always will be my favorite band. When you see them like this it just breaks your heart. Goodbye Kansas
well I am glad they didnt hang it up after this... this was 92 and we've had 16 more years of great Kansas music since.. i can relate to your broken heart as thats what I'll have when they do hang it up
I saw them in concert just a few months ago, and they ALL looked and sounded better than they did in this video, which is amazing considering the amount of time that has passed since then. I'll be broken hearted when their time is done as well, but if they keep it up like they've done the last couple years we should still see them around for some time to come.
@delphi5096 I agree. Kansas was one of my favorite bands but they peaked and probably got burnt out themselves as this video may show. Every band has their season and some dare to venture past it.
Damn, the fairy dust must have kicked in big time during this song, Walsh looks like his eyes were going to pop out of his head. The tweakin, the compulsive head/hair flipping, the "flashdance" moves.. very out of place for one of Kansas' most beautiful and reverent songs.
Leftoverture was not only one of the definitive American albums of the '70s, it was also one of the albums of my youth. This is one if its greatest cuts.
I saw Kansas so many years ago and this brought back the memory of the arena and the moment.

I guess I can see the bass player face in discontent because Steve Walsh is a bit late and he did not quite hit that note.
But Steve Walsh and Kerry Livegreen did a lot of great songs.
I believe he can correct those minor mistakes and Kansas will rock on!!!!

I was at this show, the band was outstanding but Steve was really high, his eyes could hardly stay in his face.
Seen him in Device Voice Drums and looks healthy again, even when his voice has obviously suffered.
The Symphonic DVD promise to be great, with David ragsdale at his peak and Phil Ehart, one of the best but criminally underrated drummers ever.
