What are those delightfully colourful intro and ending animations - the ones with the bears riding the carousel? Are there any more animations like that around?
This cartoon film is a part of children's animated magazine "Весёлая карусель" ("Cheerful roundabout") (1969-2002). Fragments about which you speak, are a pause-prompt part.
In fact Kotenochkin didn't do this one. And it is hard to tell who voiced the wolf. Kotenochkin wanted Vysotsky to voice the wolf in the series, but Vysotsky was not allowed by the government, so Papanov was chosen for the job. But if you remember, the wolf is whistling Vysotsky's song in the first episode. :)
I assume it was because of Vysotsky's political/religious beliefs.
I always feel sorry for Popanov because he didn't live to see the downfall of the soviet government that had treated him so badly earlier in his life.
Wow! I didn't think that Kotenochkin did anything with these characters before the first "official" short in 1969... This is really bizarre..In a way the style is interesting but not "cute". Very typical of soviet-inspired stuff of the time. The hare is a little kid and the wolf is a slovenly type - not like they'd become once they developed. It doesn't seem that Popanov did the wolf's voice in this either and the hare was, ahem, "speechless"...Still, it's an interesting bit of history.
Is this one of the episodes done outside of Soyuzmultfilm? (ECRAN) Or is this one of the legally-mired Episodes 19 & 20? The desgins are completely different from the original series, as is the format. (a series of gags/failed attempts ending in Nu, Pogodi!)
This was actually what we'd consider the pilot..it was run as part of a series with a bunch of other shorts before being decided on as its own series.
The two episodes done outside Soyuzmultfilm are up here on YouTube (titled as "Lost Episodes") and 19 & 20 are also up. This one's neither, although it's fun to see how much the characters developed.

May I ask one question?
What are those delightfully colourful intro and ending animations - the ones with the bears riding the carousel? Are there any more animations like that around?
I think they're really cool...

It's very colourful. The art seems rather quintessentially Russian.
Not like the Nu Pogodi we're familiar with.

Yes your right about the whistling.

This animation is more expressive than the regular series! I love Vulk's walk with the carriage. Also Zayet's taunting when he has the carrot.

Вы можете писать по-русски? А то я буду писать с ошибками) Думаю, что если знаете про 19 и 20 серии, то можете)
Серии, выпущенные в т/о "Экран" никакого отношения к Союзмультфильму не имеют.

Yes I figured it was the pilot. I would imagine it was done about 1968, as the first "official" short dated from '69.
I came close to meeting Kotenochkin in 2000 but he died before I could. I'll always regret that!
I still wonder if Popanov did the wolf's voice in this short, as there are no credits here.

Да, с этого всё началось. Идея понравилась начальству, на неё перекинули перспективных людей и появился волк, насвистывающий Высоцкого.
