Man, people said that this scene was cheesy, but I think that they're wrong. At this point in the movie, Gizmo sees that this gremlin is about to hurt his friends and all the suffering he's endured at the hands of this gremlin pushes him too far, and in the image of his hero, he takes action that a gremlin of his thinking (rare 'nice' gremlin) shouldn't have been able to do: He kills.

This scene shows us Gizmo's roots, and what he's willing to do when it needs to be done.
