Best move I ever made was stepping away from the (New Zealand) union environment, Unions don't provide all those great conditions, they ride in on the back of prosperity. Here's a test for unproductive union bureaurats, visit some third world country and start spreading all those condtions around, can't be done, they aren't there to spread, and the union isn't going to magic them out of thin air. Unions do nothing but suck off the productive.
A union hahahah thats a Pipe Dream hahahah XD the pun had to be made sorry. But in all honesty these are important people thank you for all your hard work!
how the heck do i get in the union? where do i start? and las but not least will they take me with no experience as a full time pipefitter or steamfitter?
@KAICHIAPET wow! lol there are def a few bad apples in every group union does have its beni's the only real complaint ive had is alot of union workers work alot harder at doing nothing than if they would just do the task at hand, and they get pissed if you out work them,,ive been in autoworkers and iron workers unions,,alot of problems today is poiled ppl with that sence of entitlement but i have nothig bad to say about the origeonal unions,,we got spoiled in the 80s and 90s
i'm here in philippines how acan i apply or do my training sir would you help me? i want ot apply would you give mre the specific nthe name of the company so that i can apply as soon as possible.
that root pass looked terrible on the inside.have to cut that out looks nasty inside.hows the rest of it look ? any slag in there ?a cresent wrench ! use that on a bottle !regulators.pipefitters dont use cresent wrench !
I've personally never known someone to join the union and not think it was one of the best moves they've ever done. However, I'm sure there are benefits and negatives to each side union and non union. It really all boils down to what's important to you personally, and everyone is different so what's important to one person wont be to another. Of course there's great jobs and great workers and shitty workers in both aspects. Just depends on the person. Not union/non union.
I've been a pipefitter welder for 23 years and a union rep came to the job and offered me a job starting as a journeyman but he could not touch my pay or benefits and I have a company truck also, he said I was not who he was looking for he was looking for people that were getting screwed at work, so I respect that but I thought the union paid better.
Unions pay according to prevailing wage. there's a lot of factors that go into that, beyond my scope of understanding. At any rate, if you're making over what the Local can get you, then good for you. Keep in mind, that if you're on the top of your game, nothing says that you Have to make only scale, I know a few that have been able to negotiate a better rate. UA469 5th yr Fitter Apprentice
The United States is called that for a reason and it was also mostly built by unions; grant it, not every union member is perfect at what they do. If it wasn't for unions, most of you non-union hands would still be gettin slave wages with no overtime, no holiday pay, no breaks, no safe work environment, no safety at all and many, many other things that you may overlook. So the next time you down some union trade; you're downing our country and what it stands for. Union Pride is American Pride.
@chillychillchilly today it seems unions inhibit progress in infrastructure & industry. a younger member's purpose is solely to finance the lavish retirement of the older members belonging to the baby boomer generation. not too mention it is near impossible to be enrolled into their country club like institution, that is nothing more than a gnostic demon which governs who can & cannot make a living. its probably less difficult to get into any1 of the 10 ten ivy league schools...
Been in trades for 25 years had a oppertunity to start fitting after doing plumbing for 20 years and if you think it's setting or plunging toilets your a fool, your ego tells you to think that way, anyway switching to fitting was a sinch, granted I had to learn some new tricks, and since then, moved right up the ladder, versatility is the key. Be true to yourself and don't let " fear based" assholes intimidate you.
Unions like, service workers and other "non" skilled labor Unions are the Unions dragging country work to its knees, the major trades ELECTRTIANS, FITTERS etc are highly trained professionals not dishwashers or busboys in the local service workers union..apples and fucking oranges.
Ive worked union shops and non union shops,
and another thing, Not a fucking plumber, i dont set toilets...FITTER!
man union ain't shit... been welding non union for the past six years non stop while your union welders sit on the bench... anybody can pay dues and buy a book, just cause you're union doesn't mean you're a real craftsman.... the most shittiest work i've seen has been (no doubt ) with union workers
exactly, union welder recieve free training through thier locals usually, unions have a standard for excellence and strive for training and the best tradespeople around so what the fuck is hbj82 talking about? go union .
thank you... the most shittiest work i've seen has been (no doubt ) with union workers ((((VERY TRUE)))) they dont pick up skills, they just sound like they know everything but dont know how to put in in actions... keep waiting on that union hall to call u guys while i eat that cake ;)
sorry to say but your attitude is shitty, most people that are on the bench want to be on the bench; and your right just because your non union doesn't mean you not a craftsman. I can walk on a job and tell what trades are union just by the quality of work. I'm a union pipefitter; I've had 2 weeks sittin on the bench in the past 6 years. That welder sittin could possibly be cuz of lack of work in that area due to the cut-throat underbidding nonunion contractors.
@chillychillchilly i couldnt agree with you more, im a sub-contractor, and i know ill cut anyones rate by 5$ just to get the work, just to jack my rate 20-30 more .. no one looks at the tickets their signing,
Google International brotherhood of Boilermakers or Pipefitters union. Find out the nearest union local where you live. The website will tell you the address and the times and days when they are accepting applications. YOu can also google Boilermakers or pipefitters "HOTSHEETS" they are advertisements for hiring positions in non union companies. YOu can tell them you know how to weld but are new to the craft and want to go out as a "Welder helper or mechanic.
Please do not join the UA!!!! As a union fitter i am tired of schooling and teaching these organized hands that come in off the streets, take a retard test and get to work side by side with real craftmen. earn your book the right way! dont by your way in! Leadslinger, you think that there aren't non union jobs out there that pay more then union? I ain't gonna trash unions because there isn't a point, each to his own. Some guys prefer the stability because of families which I get. But 85 bucks an hour, knowing how to invest, and getting my own insurance will do me just fine. But callin down everyone who's non-union? Why don't you take your journeyman-welders-helper bullshit and shove it right back up your ass:) Fuckin tool.
yeah exactly I started out in a union and I was shocked to find out that even non union companies still pay big bucks. They might not give health care and retirement benefits but like you said if your making 78$ an hour you can buy your one health care plan and save for retirement. I found a non union company thats paying 60$dollars an hour . If it were union I'd make half and then the union waste money on crappy health care plans that end up costing you more anyway when you need to see a DR
Hey longarc, I KNOW yer scab ass dosent make more than me! And I KNOW my 2 401k's and pension, and health insurance will smoke your non existiant beni's. What's it matter if your brothers knows what you make? They make the same. Big deal. Everyone can and should have a vested retirement assuming they have any foresight at all. If you don't, have a good time being chained up in a nursing home's cellar. There's a difference between not being able to get in for one reason or another and actually enjoying not being in. Think of the money we'll make if we cut wages and benefits!
Now, all we have to do is get our guys to buy into it!
I know how! We'll tell them how bad Unions are for everyone!
Yea and how Unions are bad for America and that Unionism is Terrorism!
Yes, using scare tactics always worked in the past!
Yea, after all, they should be thankful they even have a job.
Just think if we could get together with all the other businesses and use this same philosophy, we will do away with all Unions!
Yes, work

Because of general dissatisfaction with managerial practices
As a way to fulfill social and status needs
Because of union shop provisions
