its 2.30am i got a lecture in uni at 9am and ive been listening to motown and mod classics since this afternoon, theres so many tracks on youtube now, :D its brilliant :P
This is one song that epitomized the "Motown Sound". The music is awesome and background vocals are tight and Diana, with the kittish voice was nothing but the truth. I thank my mother's generation for some of the greatest music ever created by mankind!!!!!
I'm listening to all of these old clips, and what I notice is that they are actually "singing," and not riffing all up and down the scales. I'm a little old fashion, and I actually enjoy listening to lyrics and nice singing, without the total distortions we find in so many singers today. Like I said, I'm a little old fashion.
@MrReggieLew why do you sound so apologetic? the BIBLE was written thousands of years ago and IT STILL HOLDS UPPPPP. MOTOWN. there will NEVER be MUSIC like it again. STILL MOVING, INSPIRING, PLEASING me to this day!!!!!!!!!!!! ALLLLLLL GLORY TO GOD ALMIGHTY in JESUS name!!!!!!!!!!!!!
With all of their countless and timeless hits and b-sides, one can only wonder how much they earned for Motown. Only Berry knows that answer, and he ain't tellin.
I'd love to see some of these classics re-released today under a pseudo singer's name and see how many they sold. I love Katy Perry but she sounds like an amateur compared to The Supremes.
listeting to this for years and never ever realized that was a xzylophone thanks, funny me, I thought it was a triangle.. this is my favorite Supremes song
remember dancing to this at CYO dances in high school. Everyone wanted to be in the Supremes. We all imitated their dance moves (this was way before soul train line dances). Berry Gordy knew what sounded good!
The Supremes were/are simply amazing; in fact, all of Motown was such an unstoppable creative force in the sixties. Why can't America create such fantastic stuff now? The current generation of so-called "artists" can't even come close to M-town's level of power--in fact it is without question pure, disposable rubbish.
if you keep still to this, you're dead from the waist down, great sax, great floorfiller but strangely never a big hit, except for the soulsters in london, manchester and wigan
I got turned on to this song right after seeing Hard Day's Night and then I lived off AM pop radio. It was a renaissance in the summer of 64 in LA. Beatles, Searchers, Stones, and...Motown and Soul. Earth was never the same thereafter.

@Heroyesterday I don't know about that beast part. There are some pretty nice photos of Diana Ross from nearly every era. Mary had those flashing eyes and sexy smile, but Diana was magnetic. Your eye is always drawn to Diana.
This is one of the MOST excellent songs. Holland-Dozier-Holland- and Berry Gordy...the absolute geniuses behind MOTOWN. So excellent and all the talent they backed and produced: Supremes-Marvin Gaye-Jr. Walker-Smokey and the Miracles.....this list goes on and on. I am so lucky to grown up with and witnessed so much great music! Thanks for posting!!
The original version had an additional layer of psychedelic instrumentation which, at the last minute, Berry Gordy Jr. decided strip off. It was common at Motown to record elaborate productions, then in the end strip them down. They made the right choice as usual but I wish the world could hear the psychedelic version.
The secret to songs such as this, is as simple as Holland/Dozier/Holland. You don't get songs like this anymore because folks don't write like they do anymore. It is a lost art. Who is the fourth girl... in the first picture... she looks like she could be related to Mary. Anywya it is another parallel to Destiny's Child... 4 became 3 and that made the group better.
This is an excellent slide show of the Supremes/Primettes' history and I like the memorial to Flo because she really made the Supremes even though she was not the lead singer, she could have been! But an army needs soldiers, too! Everybody wants to the chief and no one the little indian braves!
DANGGGG. i keep waiting for this song to get OLD. to sound dated. IT AINT HAPPENING! I LOVE it MORE today than yesterday. PERFECT in every way. the DRUM intro. OMG! that XYLOPHONE gets me every time! & DIANA!!! MANNN, i would have LOVED to have seen her in the studio on that day. you say MOTOWN held it back for 2 yrs? no wonder, the world wasn't ready. STILL kicking til this day!!!
@tofelt You were mentioning the drums and the xylophone, but how about that BARITONE SAXOPHONE throughout the song? That instrument completed that song.
@TheRetro64 dear (i started to write in caps...but some take it as screaming. i only mean it to emphasize) retro. i did say PERFECT in every way, did i not?
@tofelt Those girls were light years ahead of their time, in style, beauty, sex appeal, music, everything. That's why I am such a huge fan. I was born in 75 (2 years before The Supremes disbanded), grew up listening to daddy's records, and today I love them more than any group today or yesterday. I even had a poster of Flo as a teenager. Even their earliest work was years ahead of it's time. The Supremes forever, and Flo is my heart.
@terrybigteekemp AMEN. except the FLO part. something about DR. but the BEAUTY of the GROUP was that their individualism made the WHOLE MAGNIFICENT. maybe that is why ross work HARD. the competition at motown was FIERCE.
@tofelt LOL! My father is a HUGE Diana fan. He saw The Supremes in concert here in Charlotte in 66' and said there was nothing like it then, and nothing has been comparable since.
@terrybigteekemp i feel SO sorry for the young people today. they REALLY dont know what REAL STAR power is. aside from JESUS CHRIST, motown sets the bar HIGHHH so that i will always have REACH. the PERFECTION of diana ross & the supremes will NEVER be matched.
@tofelt NEVER...NEVER...NEVER EVER!!! There will NEVER be another group that will come ANYWHERE close to these girls. At this point, they are simply untouchable. Sometimes I wish I was born in '45 instead of '75 so I could see them live, but thank God for YouTube. I can't get enough of them. Their style, class, sex appeal, elegance, beauty, radiance are all unmatched, and ALWAYS will be.
@terrybigteekemp just in case you have not: check THEM out on ed sullivan: songs/ALWAYS; FUNNY GIRL MEDLEY; LOVE IS LIKE AN ITCHING IN HEART leading into MORE. they look like MISS AMERICA contestants. and their last performance, DR singing MY MAN & DIDN'T WE? WOE, almost forgot, THE SUPREMES with BOBBY DARIN singing FALLING IN LOVE WITH LOVE. so excellent!
The best vocals, and gee...this was my theme song in High school in Chicago back in the day! Love them...and wish there were more GREAT music and groups like this today! Thanks for posting!
When you really go over the list of Supremes songs...,.their sheer number of top, still remembered, songs is pretty mind-boggling. You might like other groups, or another group more. But no girl group had the number of hits the Supremes did....
you can say that again as for having a lot of hits the supremes no other girl group came close. ed sullivan had them on 17 x and all were not no.1s but they were hits they were so hot in he still had them perform many songs as this one and it wasnt a no.1 it went to no.9 a top ten a hit if u were in the top ten u had a hit and the supremes had several top tens
had record sales been tracked the way they are today, they'd have outsold the beatles. black and white kids were buying the supremes. I don't know of anyone black back in the day that bought the beatles records on a regular basis, especially the singles. black folks don't buy that "yeah, yeah, yeah shit.
True indeed - and the irony behind that is that groups like the Beatles were constantly mining Black music for inspiration for their hits. I LOVE Motown and there's a really cool exhibit on the Supremes especially, at the Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, OH. Check it out if you get a chance. Peace!
Yep, the Supremes were the ONLY American group to knock the Beatles out of the #1 spot on the Top 40 Hit Parade six separate times, and that's quite an amazing accomplishment considering the phenomenal popularity of the Beatles at the time.
The peak of Motown. Atmospheric, dark, heavy and intense Detroit Blues Soul street music.....What a time.. I'm forever grateful to have had heard this with teenage ears and danced and cruised to it when Cool was real and reigned Supreme.
That insistant beat...pure Motown! I am soooo fortunate to have been around back then. A younger friend asked me what it was like listening to all that genius and I said we knew we had something even then. Think about it: Beatles, Dylan, Stones, Byrds, Beach Boys, Hendrix, Doors, Wilson Pickett, James Brown, That Memphis stuff fron Stax, Allll that Motown, Cream and God knows who else all on the radio at the SAME TIME. An amazing time that will never be duplicated, only imitated.
That's right....there was a new cool song on the radio practically every other day for years....All different, but all swingin'.....It will never happen again.
Defined an Era, for sure, maybe more than the Stones or Beatles! GI's in Nam fought with this song playing on the jukebox 24/7 with the suds a -flowin and the weed a-blowin'!! kept a LOT of lonely dudes goin' til the tour was over .... or game called on account.
@feeleffect No need to duplicate it. can't improve perfection... you can only give people something New. that is where Destiny's Child came in. I Can't think of anything inbetween that came close. Maybe the Pointer Sisters. And I guess those who are at the reigns of the mega girl group horse are the Pussy Cat Dolls... hope they can keep us interested and Dancing
ENERGY like none other. so MANY SUPERIOR acts at MOTOWN. kudos the MUSICIANS as well! but THIS song! that opening drum explosion, diana's gutty interpretation. the elegance of mary and florence's background vocals. and those xylophones!!! not no. 1? who cares! we KNOW better! the world didn't know what to do with this POWER. still considered THE SUPREMES' ANTHEM! and after ALL these years it still sounds SO FREAKIN' GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I read somewhere that Berry Gordy assembled some of the finest musicians around to create the Motown Sound - they all had a way as to how they wanted to approach music and when they locked into playing a groove, it was HELLACIOUS!!!
It just goes to show that just because a song ISN'T #1, DOESN'T mean it ISN'T a HUGE HIT, and DOESN'T mean it ain't BANGIN'! THIS song is THE BOMB!!!!! FOREVER!!!!!
@stage7 So true...Some people don't seem to realize that a number one record is only number one in comparison to the other records out that week also. if a record is up against other strong songs, it may not make to number one. That does not mean that it was not a HIT!...You've got the right idea!
quando eu tinha 10 anos uma festa em minha casa .quebraram este disco. eu fiquei muito triste. depois de anos, agora vcs me proporcionaram esta alegria de escutar os supremes
One of the supremes best from their early period..it was held in the vaults for TWO years b4 it was released. If you dont like this tune you must be deaf or dead!!!!
diane is killing this one. its no wonder michael jackson as a kid idolized her. this was the only song besides you can hurry love diane is belting strong. of course the background is blowing back.
The guy on the bari sax was Henry "Beans" Bowles , he played on many Motown hits and was an influence to Doc Kupka of The Tower of Power . Beans was scheduled to join in the Standing In The Shadows of Motown Funk Brother's renunion in 2000 , but he became very ill and died just a couple of months before the concert .
summer of 67. we would sleep with am radio on. in the heat of the night when id hear the opening notes. Well youd just jump out of the sack and shake dat booty.....
Their music and the innovative Motown Sound helped to break the racism barrier. The Supremes were so glamorous like Nubian Goddesses; it was such a joy to watch them perform on TV shows and see their incredible costume changes; I was glued to the TV screen in wonder as a teenager everytime they appeared on a show. Their sound was so sexy, my Dad loved them... he'd rock out on their awesome music; everytime I hear their music I think of my Dad... he's long gone.
this is one song that proved that diane could blow when she wanted too. nothing but heartaches you cant hurry love my world is empty with you. dianes voice soaring and flo and mary is working the background perfectly blending with diane. No female group came close to them when these songs were released. and during the time this song was on the air waves 1966 when i was 10yrs old the supremes were Huge blowing away all groups save the beatles..now thats bad! i was there and i remember well.
@blkshepherd I don't know why people say Diana isn't a good singer. She IS actually VERY gifted; her voice just isn't especially powerful like Patti or Aretha (or Flo). She's a great singer, just not with a loud, booming voice. She might niot be able to do all of the polytechnics but she still holds her own..
@christiandior1947 Dianas voice is Just as Important to Pop and Rock and Roll as Aretha Gladys Knight Patti labelle or Whitney Houston. The mere fact hat her songs have stood the test of time and will stand the test of time speaks volumes..What Diana brought to the Supremes her image and style will set the stage for generations to come. How many more rips offs of the Supremes through Dreamgirls are they going to make.? They Love to Hate Diana but cant help but copying her style in dreamgirls.
@blkshepherd ABSOLUTELY!!!!! Beyonce said in an article around the time to movie was about to drop that every female r&b artist that has emerged since Diana Ross has been influenced by Diana Ross and every r&b girl group since the Supremes has been influened by the Supremes. Never heard the truth put better in regards to that. Even girl groups and solo artists that came before them had to adapt once Diana and The Supremes hit big. They were and are the standard by which everyone is judged.
@christiandior1947 .I doubt even the new bio topic to be made about Florence Ballard,
will tarnish what Diana brought to the Supremes. and regardless of What the move will display be it truth, fiction, or a one sided view..in this case its really and Outside view of Flo. Flo is not writing it. Neither Diana nor Mary who's books(Dreamgirl/Faith) the movie should have been based on not an outside.. Still when i Listen to this song all i remember is a Fantastic Lead and a Back up Blowin away!
i love it..Love iT..LOVE iT..!!!,..i remember growing up to this music, i loved it then as much as i still love it now...i can listen to this all day/all night and still never get tired of hearing it,..many many thanks..pls keep post'n all this great music..lotsa love !!!
The Supremes A-GO A-Go 1966! There only #1 album..........I can hear why it was!! Rock on! Thanks HDH and The Funk Brothers, and Diana, Florence and Mary......Supreme!
I actually think their WHERE DID OUR LOVE GO album or MORE HITS BY THE SUPREMES album should have been #1 the A GO-GO album is alright - thanks to the singles but Flo should have lead THESE BOOTS ARE MADE FOR WALKIN'
Sorry - I clicked the thumbs down button by mistake - I meant to agree with you - I love this song too! It's twice I've accidentally clicked the wrong button, really annoying!
IRVINGCLAW, the deleted live version will show up here again, I guarantee someone will psot it. Keep looking . I have seen this pattern with many great songs
my favorite diana ross and the supremes songs! i have had a steady diet diana ross and the supremes my entire life. having been born in 1963 i have, in a very real sense, grown up with this wonderful music in the bakground. in the 80s an awesome remix dance tune was made of ts particular tune.

@tofelt You were mentioning the drums and the xylophone, but how about that BARITONE SAXOPHONE throughout the song? That instrument completed that song.
TheRetro64 10 months ago
@TheRetro64 dear (i started to write in caps...but some take it as screaming. i only mean it to emphasize) retro. i did say PERFECT in every way, did i not?
tofelt 10 months ago
@tofelt Those girls were light years ahead of their time, in style, beauty, sex appeal, music, everything. That's why I am such a huge fan. I was born in 75 (2 years before The Supremes disbanded), grew up listening to daddy's records, and today I love them more than any group today or yesterday. I even had a poster of Flo as a teenager. Even their earliest work was years ahead of it's time. The Supremes forever, and Flo is my heart.
terrybigteekemp 10 months ago
@terrybigteekemp AMEN. except the FLO part. something about DR. but the BEAUTY of the GROUP was that their individualism made the WHOLE MAGNIFICENT. maybe that is why ross work HARD. the competition at motown was FIERCE.
tofelt 10 months ago
@tofelt LOL! My father is a HUGE Diana fan. He saw The Supremes in concert here in Charlotte in 66' and said there was nothing like it then, and nothing has been comparable since.
terrybigteekemp 10 months ago 6
@terrybigteekemp i feel SO sorry for the young people today. they REALLY dont know what REAL STAR power is. aside from JESUS CHRIST, motown sets the bar HIGHHH so that i will always have REACH. the PERFECTION of diana ross & the supremes will NEVER be matched.
tofelt 10 months ago
@tofelt NEVER...NEVER...NEVER EVER!!! There will NEVER be another group that will come ANYWHERE close to these girls. At this point, they are simply untouchable. Sometimes I wish I was born in '45 instead of '75 so I could see them live, but thank God for YouTube. I can't get enough of them. Their style, class, sex appeal, elegance, beauty, radiance are all unmatched, and ALWAYS will be.
terrybigteekemp 10 months ago
@terrybigteekemp just in case you have not: check THEM out on ed sullivan: songs/ALWAYS; FUNNY GIRL MEDLEY; LOVE IS LIKE AN ITCHING IN HEART leading into MORE. they look like MISS AMERICA contestants. and their last performance, DR singing MY MAN & DIDN'T WE? WOE, almost forgot, THE SUPREMES with BOBBY DARIN singing FALLING IN LOVE WITH LOVE. so excellent!

to think Motown held this song from the public for TWO years before they released it ! (recorded in 1964)

When you really go over the list of Supremes songs...,.their sheer number of top, still remembered, songs is pretty mind-boggling. You might like other groups, or another group more. But no girl group had the number of hits the Supremes did....
PaulDePace 2 years ago
you can say that again as for having a lot of hits the supremes no other girl group came close. ed sullivan had them on 17 x and all were not no.1s but they were hits they were so hot in he still had them perform many songs as this one and it wasnt a no.1 it went to no.9 a top ten a hit if u were in the top ten u had a hit and the supremes had several top tens
blkshepherd 2 years ago
had record sales been tracked the way they are today, they'd have outsold the beatles. black and white kids were buying the supremes. I don't know of anyone black back in the day that bought the beatles records on a regular basis, especially the singles. black folks don't buy that "yeah, yeah, yeah shit.
speakwhnspkn2 2 years ago 2
True indeed - and the irony behind that is that groups like the Beatles were constantly mining Black music for inspiration for their hits. I LOVE Motown and there's a really cool exhibit on the Supremes especially, at the Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, OH. Check it out if you get a chance. Peace!
chj2 2 years ago
Yep, the Supremes were the ONLY American group to knock the Beatles out of the #1 spot on the Top 40 Hit Parade six separate times, and that's quite an amazing accomplishment considering the phenomenal popularity of the Beatles at the time.
Eschatus2 2 years ago 3
Another side note..........I always heard the sound of Detroit car horns in this.
flamesounds 2 years ago
The peak of Motown. Atmospheric, dark, heavy and intense Detroit Blues Soul street music.....What a time.. I'm forever grateful to have had heard this with teenage ears and danced and cruised to it when Cool was real and reigned Supreme.

The Motown Sound was, and still is, unique...
alan49624 2 years ago 3
That insistant beat...pure Motown! I am soooo fortunate to have been around back then. A younger friend asked me what it was like listening to all that genius and I said we knew we had something even then. Think about it: Beatles, Dylan, Stones, Byrds, Beach Boys, Hendrix, Doors, Wilson Pickett, James Brown, That Memphis stuff fron Stax, Allll that Motown, Cream and God knows who else all on the radio at the SAME TIME. An amazing time that will never be duplicated, only imitated.
eastsidewillie 2 years ago 3
That's right....there was a new cool song on the radio practically every other day for years....All different, but all swingin'.....It will never happen again.
flamesounds 2 years ago
Defined an Era, for sure, maybe more than the Stones or Beatles! GI's in Nam fought with this song playing on the jukebox 24/7 with the suds a -flowin and the weed a-blowin'!! kept a LOT of lonely dudes goin' til the tour was over .... or game called on account.
Hankster957 2 years ago 2
This song has the "Feel" that's SO ADDICTIVE! The Supremes will NEVER BE DUPLICATED!
feeleffect 2 years ago 20
@feeleffect No need to duplicate it. can't improve perfection... you can only give people something New. that is where Destiny's Child came in. I Can't think of anything inbetween that came close. Maybe the Pointer Sisters. And I guess those who are at the reigns of the mega girl group horse are the Pussy Cat Dolls... hope they can keep us interested and Dancing

Many Thanks.

Steely Dan has been playing this on tour the past couple of years. Vocals are handled by their three female backing singers.

That xylophone!!!! they should use real instruments more in todays music.
BabyboyDet 2 years ago 4
I know, right?? it really stands out, aside from the vocals and backgrounds!
christheone8773 2 years ago
ENERGY like none other. so MANY SUPERIOR acts at MOTOWN. kudos the MUSICIANS as well! but THIS song! that opening drum explosion, diana's gutty interpretation. the elegance of mary and florence's background vocals. and those xylophones!!! not no. 1? who cares! we KNOW better! the world didn't know what to do with this POWER. still considered THE SUPREMES' ANTHEM! and after ALL these years it still sounds SO FREAKIN' GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
tofelt 2 years ago 3
I read somewhere that Berry Gordy assembled some of the finest musicians around to create the Motown Sound - they all had a way as to how they wanted to approach music and when they locked into playing a groove, it was HELLACIOUS!!!
christheone8773 2 years ago
They called them The Funk Brothers, and there's a documentary about them that was done recently that's fascinating. I got it on Netflix.
bdgop 2 years ago
if the documentary youre referring to, "Standing in the Shadows of Motown", I have that on DVD, and it is outstanding!
christheone8773 2 years ago 2
It just goes to show that just because a song ISN'T #1, DOESN'T mean it ISN'T a HUGE HIT, and DOESN'T mean it ain't BANGIN'! THIS song is THE BOMB!!!!! FOREVER!!!!!
stage7 2 years ago
@stage7 So true...Some people don't seem to realize that a number one record is only number one in comparison to the other records out that week also. if a record is up against other strong songs, it may not make to number one. That does not mean that it was not a HIT!...You've got the right idea!

Love that Bari Sax.. Love these beautiful ladies.. Love this song!!
angelrocket88 2 years ago
The guy on the bari sax was Henry "Beans" Bowles , he played on many Motown hits and was an influence to Doc Kupka of The Tower of Power . Beans was scheduled to join in the Standing In The Shadows of Motown Funk Brother's renunion in 2000 , but he became very ill and died just a couple of months before the concert .

I'm in love with Mary, she's such a doll!
Radicals888 2 years ago 2
Their music and the innovative Motown Sound helped to break the racism barrier. The Supremes were so glamorous like Nubian Goddesses; it was such a joy to watch them perform on TV shows and see their incredible costume changes; I was glued to the TV screen in wonder as a teenager everytime they appeared on a show. Their sound was so sexy, my Dad loved them... he'd rock out on their awesome music; everytime I hear their music I think of my Dad... he's long gone.

mary was jus too fine.
MoOn42O 3 years ago
this is one song that proved that diane could blow when she wanted too. nothing but heartaches you cant hurry love my world is empty with you. dianes voice soaring and flo and mary is working the background perfectly blending with diane. No female group came close to them when these songs were released. and during the time this song was on the air waves 1966 when i was 10yrs old the supremes were Huge blowing away all groups save the beatles..now thats bad! i was there and i remember well.
blkshepherd 3 years ago 12
Yes The Beatles would Sing, play the instruments, write the words&music to many, many great songs.
Radicals888 2 years ago
@blkshepherd I don't know why people say Diana isn't a good singer. She IS actually VERY gifted; her voice just isn't especially powerful like Patti or Aretha (or Flo). She's a great singer, just not with a loud, booming voice. She might niot be able to do all of the polytechnics but she still holds her own..
christiandior1947 1 year ago
@christiandior1947 Dianas voice is Just as Important to Pop and Rock and Roll as Aretha Gladys Knight Patti labelle or Whitney Houston. The mere fact hat her songs have stood the test of time and will stand the test of time speaks volumes..What Diana brought to the Supremes her image and style will set the stage for generations to come. How many more rips offs of the Supremes through Dreamgirls are they going to make.? They Love to Hate Diana but cant help but copying her style in dreamgirls.
blkshepherd 1 year ago
@blkshepherd ABSOLUTELY!!!!! Beyonce said in an article around the time to movie was about to drop that every female r&b artist that has emerged since Diana Ross has been influenced by Diana Ross and every r&b girl group since the Supremes has been influened by the Supremes. Never heard the truth put better in regards to that. Even girl groups and solo artists that came before them had to adapt once Diana and The Supremes hit big. They were and are the standard by which everyone is judged.
christiandior1947 1 year ago
@christiandior1947 .I doubt even the new bio topic to be made about Florence Ballard,
will tarnish what Diana brought to the Supremes. and regardless of What the move will display be it truth, fiction, or a one sided view..in this case its really and Outside view of Flo. Flo is not writing it. Neither Diana nor Mary who's books(Dreamgirl/Faith) the movie should have been based on not an outside.. Still when i Listen to this song all i remember is a Fantastic Lead and a Back up Blowin away!
