I saw one making of of the film Orange Mechanics where Anthony Burgess appears speaking of the book and the film. If my memory serves me right, for the Burgess clothes he was in this program of the Dick Cavett. You would not have are part to postar in youtube or would know where to find it? My English is poor. Anyway, thank you for post this videos.
Burgess apparently did countless interviews on things like Wogan. Would love to see them, but no idea how we'd get them. Will anyone form a pact to burgle the BBC vaults? I would meet with you seriously upon this
He did appear many times on Wogan, Russell Harty, Parkinson, Aspel and so on. Much as I love his writing (and the music of his I've heard) he did tend to repeat the same anecdotes, most of which appear in the two volumes of autobiography and his various books on language.
@grobbledonk On the mediatheque at London's national film theatre you can see his TV lecture on 1984. Otherwise, I don't know. I remember him on Saturday Night Clive being bawdy. There's a South Bank Show he did on Hemingway. There must be much more.
Thanks for putting this up. It is a little depressing, but that does not mean you should give up. Burgess' autobio. and other work are an endless inspiration.
Its funny:Burgess going on one of his anti-tax rants. I like the man as an author but I`d wonder how he`d reply to how the Irish Artist's tax exemption was abused by the god awful U2 who were making profits of €250 million per year, all of which was untaxed.
I remember the day I first started to read Earthly Powers. It was the afternoon of my 81st birthday and I was in bed with my catamite when Ali announced that the archbishop had come to see me.
This is a great video. Burgess is spot on. Writers are the unsung heroes who don't make a penny. Sad to hear about the Tim White. I run a small music and art magazine and I'm barely scratching out a living from the earnings I make. If you're thinking of making millions as a writer forget it. Get into real estate or drug dealing. Thanks for posting this video.
Oh, man, best television ever! Oh...what happened? What happened?

@001Dixie, you're fucking illiterate, 'effected posing'? AFFECTED is what you meant, and Anthony Burgess was quite far beyond 'abject scum' like you.

Fascinating short clip - shows the well read range of Burgess's mind as well as an insight into the punitive British 1970s tax arrangements.

@grobbledonk Agree with what you say about Burgess. What a great oral storyteller, not just a great novelist.

Yep, morons like Russell Brand and Jonathan Ross have certainly dumbed down chat shows,
CharlesDickens99 2 years ago 5
@CharlesDickens99 Burgess did pop up on one of Jonathan Ross's shows, possibly the last resort, maybe if ross was covering for wogan one week?

why is that opening sentence so famous? and could geofferey be considered a catamite as he's in his thirties?
Ahrs32 3 years ago 2
Kenneth has reached his eighty-first year. I should think anyone with a pulse and the voluntary command of his bowels is qualified as a catamite.
