war is extreme politics. While i admire the brave British soldiers that actually fought there I was certainly no admirer of Maggie T. I hated her with a passion..
There's too much talk of "imperialism'. Do you really think it's wrong for the people who live somewhere to have the right to consent to their government?. That's a bout it - Isn't that how you think we shoulld all live? The problem (sadly) is that Falklands, or Malvinas if you like (though everyone who's lived there since the year dot wouldn't call it them that) - has suddenly become VALUABLE
Fair comment. I'd forgotten about all the little diplomatic incidents involving geologists. My hope, though, was to pont out the principle of goverment by consent.....
@netiveus348 Except that in 1982 nobody could say if there was oil in the Falklands.
It wasn't until 1998 that any exploration was carried out. If it was fought for oil why wait 16 years to start looking for it.
It was fought because we could not allow a foreign invader to conquer British territory. Thatcher would not have survived if we hadn't succedded in recovering them so perhaps we can say it was also about political survival.
@netiveus348 I remember taking an interest in this in the late 1970s. It was then considered that the technology required for test drilling in the South Atlantic would not be available for at least thirty years. As it has turned out, that was optimistic.

argentina should fuck off and have some respect for the people who actually live there.
They have no claim on it whatsoever.
The people are british and want to remain so.
Should GB take over france being as they ruled parts of it hundreds of years ago? Imagine how that would go down at the UN.
Its about as a legimate claim as argentinas is to the falklands
Just because its a small place doesnt mean you can trample all over peoples rights.

But oil no definately not.

@flashgrim I agree it had nothing to do with oil. But it was believed that the South Atlantic field could be the largest in the world (as I recall).

Interesting photos. Most of them I've seen for the first time. Apart from typical scenes of war - some nice pictures of scenery.

You are right. Sometimes those who get too strict about their copyrights turn out to act against themselves. This music is also good.
