Yes, they used very intricate special effects that used a computer. These are presented in great detain on the Special Features section of the DVD. I wish someone would post that DVD section, for those who do not own the DVD. They didnt photoshop lindsays face over erin. When filming scenes/w 2 lindsays they would use split screen & film each scene twice. To save time acting double erin played lindsay in shots where 1 of the sisters is only seen from the back or over the shoulder.
So erin ONLY appears in over the shoulder/from behind shots. Also if the "twins" are ever infront/touching the other (i.e. hungging) split screen doesnt work as there is nowhere to split & a double is needed but doesnt face the camera.

@sharaLuna2008 they did the same thing in 1961, when they made the original parent trap. However, they didn't have blue screen back then (they did in the '98 version), so it was even harder.
actually Erin is credited in the actual film as being lindsay's Body Double, because they were the same height and looked similar enough at this age. Check the sources :-)

Erin doesn't talk at all. They use them for hugging scenes, and, when she does talk, it's for Lindsay Lohan to tape.
Then she does the other, and then they put it all together, and get just Lindsay Lohan.

Erin was flmed as annie and hallie acting double. they shot the film many times. some erin was annie and some she was hallie!
