@bunnyhelp101 no, because only the levels are wire. She's a standard rat, but I did have 4 dumbos, they're quite cute. Just please be sure you do your research.
@HairlessRodentQueen I will do my research, dont worry, have already started. are the dumbos hairless? dumbos are sooo cute. i used to have a fancy hooded rat, well it was my sisters, but i looked aftre it alot, but then my sis decided to sell it :(
@bunnyhelp101 dumbo is just the ear type, not a breed. Standard ears are what you see on little Alice in the video, dumbo are the ears that are much larger and off to the side a bit more. Please be sure you get more than one rat so it's not lonely.
@bunnyhelp101 Some people like to refer to them as a breed, but it's not accurate, consider that the dumbo ear type carries across many different types of rats. It's a bit like saying all dogs with pointy ears are a breed on their own. I've had standard AND dumbo eared hairless rats, it's an ear type. :)
@HairlessRodentQueen omg, its bunnyhelp101, just my other account, anywho, dumbo is a breed on its own. look at there fur to. they are a breed on there own
I just got a Hairless ratty today, I've had four rats in my lifetime. Two have passed, but my other two ones are welcoming the little one just fine. XD They are just too cute
@wildfirefox444 Thanks! Yeah she was an AWESOME lil ratty, SOOOo sweet and soooo much fun. I agree, even a long 4 year ratty life is nowhere near long enough for such amazing animals!
@MCCproductions6 what kind of cage do you have? I had 5 different rats in that cage and never had one escape through the bars (the door did get loose once and one of my boys popped it open with their teeth, naughty things :P)
Thanks for your concern, but only the shelves are wire, the base of the cage isnt, which is where she spent most of her time. With wire shelves, it made it more sanitary and easier to clean. She lived to be a bit over 4 years old and passed of old age, so clearly the cage WAS suitable. Breeding is NOT cruelty if you do so responsibly. I searched for over a year to find just the right breeding stock, my rats were happy and healthy.
@Ninjin93 Right, would that be why she lived to a ripe age of four and never had a single health problem? Breeding isn't cruel if you're responsible and know what you're doing, breeding done right can improve the breed.
@HairlessRodentQueen He's right about one thing, though, cages with wire floors are not good for rats. You're lucky that all your rats have been healthy, but wire floors have been shown to cause Bumblefoot in rats.
@hohohotdog true, though only the levels were wire, the rest was flat and had plenty of bedding material. I kept a close eye on them in case of bumble. :)
I had one 12 years ago....and I miss him everyday! I loved him sooo much. They are the greatest pet in the world. So loyal and loving. Never bite....just amazing pets all around. I miss you Rattie!
My sister had given to me 2 rats of the same family. 1 berkshire and a hairless rat ;) My hairless rat named '' RadPo'' died 1 year later . I miss her !!!!!!!! :'(
The bottom has plenty of bedding but the platforms do not, she's almost three and hasnt had any issues with spending minimal time on the wire shelving. :)
There is a chance they've got a type of respiratory infection. You should probably have them checked out and get them on oral baytril. Keep them warm and get some baby food, it's rich and easy for them to eat, they love it too! Lemme know how things go :)
Aww :) I used to have two rats when I was a little younger, though it didn't quite work out... one was a sweet old girl, but the other was pretty aggressive. She outlived the nicer one and, admittedly, I was kind of afraid of her (got some nasty bites), but I still felt pretty bad when she died (Both of old age). I might give rats another try when I'm older, but for now I'm happy with my guinea pig. :]
I used to have mice and I have to say their urine does really have a strong smell. Rat urine is not nearly as strong. However, you do have to clean the cage frequently, as with any animal.
I'm actually getting my first rat tomorrow! (Hairless, 8 wks.) And before you say it, I KNOW that I should buy more than one because they're very "social", but for now, one's all I can handle. Although I'll probably get another one in a couple of months.
Two rats are actually easier to handle, because they keep themselves busy and you don't have to be there for em ALL the time ^^ And it's super cute watching em together
Wow, she's such a little sweetheart. ^.^ I've never seen a hairless rat in real life, I think they don't breed them in Germany... but hairless or not, rats are adorable!
Only one? Ratties should never be alone, my gal is temporarily, but she will have friends soon ^^ Please think about getting more than one, as rats are very social animals who love to be with other rats.
Do you find that hairless rats don't like to be touched? I have a hairless rat and a furry one I adopted and the hairless one doesn't really like to be picked up or petted. Is this usual?
my rats adore being touched, they are all hairless and all love being groomed and cuddled, though some rats prefere it more than others, perhaps your rat is just shy? Give it time, im sure it will warm up in time ^^ good luck!
She is sooooooooooooooo cute She makes me just want to go over to her and start playing with her. Your so lucky I always wanted a rat but Parents won't let me.
hehe thanks, i love her to death.. and dont worry, it took me awhile to talk my parents into it, hehe.. and then another few years and they let me breed ^___^

I hope you know that the cage isn't suitable for the rat! And the breed and multiply of hairless rats is animal cruelity.
But rats are cute, thats true.

Rats don't stink like mice do. Not at all. Also, you can litter box train them.
