  • WTF - Why did Universal take the songs down?

  • Top cult rock artist!

  • great song great lyrics and a performance video!

  • Fantastic!

  • fucking love the mic stand

  • 1987 great year 9 th grade

  • Fuuuuurkin GREAT SONG !!

  • Greeeeat song. I'm not being sarcastic.

  • Comment removed

  • You heard him world......Shut your mouth.

  • I Love This

I Love His Bass Player too

  • I love the mic stand!!

  • yeah it really caught on in a big way

  • You know, I don't remember seeing too many of those types of stands back in the day...Were they really that popular?

  • Not even nearly!

    I was being sarcastic, sorry

  • I hate how when people listen to songs like this they get caught up with when it was made and who covered it. Death Cab is an extremely invented band with an original sound. The point of music is to make something new and all your own, even if covering an old song. so quit expecting music to sound like it did in the eighties, sixties, seventies, or nineties! Music will always be changing and its your job as a listener to find what you like because no matter who you are its never all shit

  • I dont think Jamie Lee Curtis and Julian Cope have ever been seen in the same room together

  • what about your bedroom...along wit yo mamma

  • ...And the point of this song is....?

  • What!, with a title like "world shut your mouth" surley it s a very obvious song, at least not with some stupid titles like sex on fire that makes no sense...

  • I mean't it's just bland....by the way 'sex on fire' is only meaningless to someone who doesn't know how to do it very well.

  • haha.good comeback

  • and the POINT OF ANY SONG..............?

  • have you never had that feeling?

  • NO NEVER but I get the impression that 'that feeling' is one of your best friends!

  • Julian is great! "I know a place where we can hide from the human race-" maybe he means Liverpool...

  • 80s rule!! My 7 year old daughter said " I liked the song very much. It was a greatsong from the 80s" Its that catchy that people just love it. Young or old alike, appreciation for 80s music has really taken off. And with music like this no wonder it is being re-discovered.

    Emma Elizabeth [age 7 years]

  • how dense am I, of course this drummer Chris Whitten is the same guy on The Waterboys Whole of the Moon - I love this guy's work!

  • Death Cab For Cutie is a joke. They have no balls. Stupid name, too, like many bands these days. 'My Chemical Romance'--'Cute Is What We Aim For'--'Vampire Weekend'--when will the lameness end? See, Julian Cope has the goods, kids, and anyone with EARS can hear that! These tinny-sounding, digital, drummer-sounds-like-a-drum-machine, singer-sounds-like-a-wuss bands like wimpy-ass Death Cab aren't doing it for anyone except for perhaps I-Pod worshippers. Smash the I-Pods! Hi-Fis RULE!

  • Well said, mattsince69, these young punks today, just have no appreciation for originality. Their mediocre taste for music is sickening.

  • 'Death Cab For Cutie' is a song by the Bonzo Dog Band, so I think they are at least listening to the right stuff....

  • Yes, they definitely seem to have good taste--however, they themselves are SEVERELY BORING and they don't rock. They are there for the O.C. crowd and for sensitive pony-tailed men as far as can can discern.

    Bonzo Dog Band kicks ass!

  • You are a funny man

  • the death cab for cutie cover is better

  • you CANNOT be serious.

  • what planet are u on mrjarhead......

  • Pie...

  • I have to comment - especially when people say they are old. Ha ha, it's not that, it's that the world kept on going ! They did it, not us ! And good to see this song here, thanks.

  • So many old people reminiscing about their memories. Nonetheless it's still a catchy song.

  • World's coolest microphone stand.

  • This song brings back so many memories. The 80's was the best decade for pop music in my lifetime and I'm someone who lived through the 60's. The Cure, the Smiths, Oingo Boingo, B-52's, REM, the Smithereens, and so many others.

We'll never have another decade like it. The good old days...

  • this's nice :) Love it

  • definitely makes up the soundtrack of my life...ah, the sounds of my youth...

  • Man, I'm old. I remember when this single was released fresh to radio. I liked it then, but I love it now.

  • Bellissimo periodo magico!

  • i love 80's and 90's rock -pop.

  • this clearly points out how much today's music sucks so much ass compared to the eras before the millennium

  • absolutely

  • I hope that doesn't include Julian Cope's excellent Black Sheep that came out last year. Actually, there's a lot of great music out there right now if you're willing to look for it.

  • Now - THIS is Fuckin' Pop music!!! Yeah

  • u r so fuckin right!!!!!

    reynard the fox......

  • st. julain is almost THE perfect pop album.

  • Such a badass, he opened up for Siouxsie and the Banshees in 1990 in St. Pete, Florida and smoked 'em, they sucked, I'm sorry.

  • dude is playing the hell out of those drums

  • The drummer is Chris Whitten, who played with Paul McCartney in the early 1990s

  • wow nice :)

my dad says this is like last summer by lostprophets :S wierd!

  • Great song, interesting use of key change near the end, it goes up and we expect the chorus to be in the new key, a-la Eurovision and best tradtion of the X-Factor, but comes back down..priceless.

In an age of synths, it was great when this rocker came through.

I really rate this guy and this song is never far from my playlists and my car stereo.

There're a couple of other songs on "Floored Genius", such as "Spacehopper" and "Trampoline" which are just as good!

  • What a tune!

  • Awesome!

  • omg climbable mic stand

  • I think its chris whitten on drums(paul mcartney, dire straits,ABC) i think he livs in Australia though he was born in the uk

  • actually, I am wrong about that please excuse

  • still around as far as I know. Maybe moved beyond the 'the ghost' phase. Knew him through Steve Lovell in the 80s.

  • Nah he hasn't moved beyond it..he's doing the live Most Haunted right now.

  • saw him at Wolves civic, came out did a two an half hour set. He was awesome a real show man & bloody good laugh top bloke

  • great song....luv to see this guy live

  • what ever happen to the cute drummer?

  • does he ever open his eyes?

  • yes to see

  • This Is A Really Good Songg!! :)

  • I sing this chorus in my head when people piss me off it's quite satisfying....

  • I would've liked to hear more classics from julian during the 80's. he has the voice, look and performance.

  • seen him live fuckin awesome

  • I want that mic stand

  • I just wanna sing my balls off this as loudly I can!!!!

  • best EVER microphone stand

  • I don't know is it me or does anyone else think Julian Cope looks a bit like Jamie Lee Curtis in this vid?

  • Heh, heh, as a matter of fact...

  • Goddamn! Pause it at 2.42-Its quite striking how similar he looks to Jamie-lee Curtis! You are right Richwicz! Could also be the reason you never see them in the same room together, lol!

  • Julian Cope has got to be one of THE most underrated musicians on the planet. A demented genius, I love him!

  • As a sometimes rock critic, I predicted when this came out that Julian Cope would become a huge star. Wish I'd been right.

  • His lyrics are way to good and too weird.

  • HEAD ON!!!

  • Excelllllllllllllllllllllent!!!!! Hes from tamuf!!!!

  • it can speak french N

  • I'm looking forward to his new album "Black Sheep".

  • the three most sublime chords ever

  • Saw him on this album tour with Siouxie and he did indeed have that ladder microphone. They could play this on the radio and say it was new and everyone would dig it.

  • I fookin' love this tune. It needs a good speeded up punk cover.

  • why did i think this song was by the b-52's? what the hell?

  • Spot on. 1986 it was.

  • 1986??????

    Man, I'm old.

  • wonderful song thanks for sharing!!

  • Did'nt Julian Cope bang Courtney Love??

  • death cab for cutie has a really good cover of this song on their Title and Registration EP.

  • dom joly??? reminds me more of louie louie by the kingsmen. great song and vid though

  • Good song, New Zealanders love uk music

  • i like them both

    no place to compare!

good track though , cope is cool

  • Julian Cope loves Mighty High...In Drug City!!

  • G R E A T S O N G

  • I thought it was David Bowie digging carrots!

  • Great singer/songwriting rocker in his prime 1987... His latest is a comeback that has garnered only less than favorable reviews. Too bad.

  • Is this Bruce springsteen

    My arse smells of carrots

    Thanks

  • Julian Cope and Ian McCulloch used to be in a band together

  • She was standing in the face of fashion yeah

The time was going so frequently

    Say world shut your mouth

    Great song.

  • Love this song. And the microphone stand rocks. :)

  • yeah and he had one before jonathan davies of korn

  • If I remember rightly the stand was christened 'The Cosmic Arsehole'

  • The funny thing is that, apparently Julian Cope was fired/sacked by his record company for saying: "The only reason why I haven't killed Bono is because I'd go to jail and he'd become a martyr"

  • Wow I really like JC now!!!

  • How come sometimes when I "reply" it appears below the original comment, as it should, other times it pops in at the top, so noone knows what I'm replyin' to? When I said "Wow I really like JC now" It was a reply to this:

The funny thing is that, apparently Julian Cope was fired/sacked by his record company for saying: "The only reason why I haven't killed Bono is because I'd go to jail and he'd become a martyr"

  • I've noticed that myself, mabye it takes a while to sort itself out. Best ask the youtube help desk.

  • song is good, the video is cheesey tho haha

  • thats what all you guys say but we did'nt care, it was meant to be. you had to be there

  • What!?! It wasn't cheesy back then. It was as cheesy as The Arctic Monkey's will be in 20 years. Now thats CHEESE!!!

  • oh who cares....blah

  • Very cool....reminds of of Mtv..when it was actually Music Television...

Thanks for the vid...miss those days terribly.

  • Never though much about JC.....he's damn good!! :)

  • yehhhhhhhhhhh shut your mouth

  • ahhh Julian, this is the song that, if feeling a bit down, will pick back up again.

first time seeing the vid though, and has to laffs a bit, the mike stand and triangle pointy set, tis like Leonardo de Capio, gone wrong on Titanic, World Shut ur Mouth cos I can Fly, lol

    just an observation (sad face)

will stick to me Saint Julian cd, better in my head

    loads of luff's

  • Awesome video. Haven´t seen it since the 80´s. Thanks 4 posting.

  • l'ho conosciuto con qwesta song

  • Anch'io so capito! ;-))

  • his band is called The Teardrop Explodes. that is such a cool title for a band.

  • wow! love it!

  • saw him twice around the time of the album release of St Julian. He had that microphone stand with him and used to swing out on it, over/almost in the audience. Excellent! I wonder if he's still got his leather jacket, like I have.

  • yeah, the microphone thing is cool. i remember when this came out, great f-ing song!!! he have other songs this good?

  • yea, the album this came from, St. Julian, should be available on CD. Full of top tracks

  • julian=delicious.

  • great song thanks so much for the memories.

    thanks again,;)

  • If you disable insertion, Universal, at least reissue it.

  • De las mejores canciones de los 80.

  • Tears of a clown.

  • My favourite song growing up with my friend, back in 1986!!!

  • sounds just like the kinks...

  • ECHO AND THE BUNNYMEN

  • Man this guy ripped Mac's shit off so bad!!

  • Fuck Off

  • Oi, Julian's my fourth cousin third removed!

    Not.

    Great song.

  • That is a pretty cool mike stand. Not a bad ladder as well.

  • that mic stand is amazing.

  • Thanks for this. Fantastic blast from the past, but brilliant in any era.

  • spot on. great tune. timeless

  • Woolian! You weird bastard, I love you xx

  • I used to like this song-Thanks

  • That's Chris Whitten on drums. An excellent drummer who would later go on to work w/ none other than Sir Paul McCartney.

  • Hes my dads best friend iv,e been round his house loads!

  • Tell Julian to come around and shag me...

  • Your dad's best friend?

    Bullshit

  • Dom Jolly

  • Saw Julian in Toronto in 1990 and (along with another fan or two) bore him aloft as he hi-fived the sparse but enthusiastic crowd. This video and song capture him at his pop peak before he got even weirder and (in my opinion) better.

  • Julian's mum teached me at florendine infant school,Tamworth. She always told us she had a famous son in a band.........she was telling the truth !!

  • Don't you mean 'taught'? She can't have been that good a teacher...

  • No.

  • Read his book(s) Repossesed and Head-on.

  • i love this song !!! and nice video

  • what was all that climbing on the microphone stand shitsey all aboutsey? he was better in teardrop explodes

  • Thanks for posting this.

Brings back memories. Julian didn't make it to the show in Chicago. The stage was set and everyone was ready to go on but Julian didn't show up.

  • good song but the blokes a prat

  • They were not prat's. Troy was a nice guy. If Juilian didn't want to go on he wasn't going on. They had a problem at the Ritz in NY. According to Troy Julian had a fit on someone and fell down the stairs.

    LadyDemocrat

  • Bass line really keeps the song hooked up and driving. By the way, that is Chris Whitten on drums. Cope's mike stand also doubles as a painter's scaffold.

  • Hahh hahh! This vid brings back great memories... but, yeah, what's with Julian climbing the mic?? Don't remember it seeming so silly back in the day.

  • Nice Leathers!

  • shut up

  • Dave shut ur mouth. NONCE
