Used to watch from the crossing when F units and the Crescent would go through in the early '60s. Relatives buried in the cementary in Clifotn. Played on pulp cars there on the sidings. Nothing like it used to be. People are know it alls and do not have a clue in the way it really was. B&O, Seaboard, Souther as well as the RF&O used the track. Really miss the time. Went to the Nam in '69 and that was it. J
That's how all trains are supposed to be run. Usually everybody at the main stations that put together the trains are too lazy and don't have good enough bosses to enforce the rules. Look at all the old clips of trains in the 50's and 60's. That's how they're all run.
I narrate on the Cardinal here in West Virginia. It is a very nice route to go on while coming through the New River Gorge up to the Greenbrier River Valley. Sad to say that the train is losing business bad
Fred: it is a shame. I think the Cardinal is THE most scenic Amtrak passenger train east of the Mississippi. Since you have a bit of an insider's advantage, do you think I should enjoy this train sooner than later? I have a young daughter...anxiously awaiting for her to get older...so we can share a memorable trip on this train. But judging from all the posts on this thread, maybe I ought to move on it now.
Dude the Cardinal and Hoosier State are losing buisness because they go through nothing but small towns except Indy and Chicago. Not many people in West Virginia ride Amtrak. I live by the Amtrak station in Dyer Indiana. I always notice whenever the train comes it's always about 25-45 minutes late. People sometimes lose patients and don't wait. They need to get new Locomotives for the Cardinal and Hoosier state. Last time I rode it broke down to and from West Virginia.
If Amtrak wasted tons of money(which they never will)and builds a high speed line for the cardinal and purchased the TGV and ran it at 200 MPH from washington to Chicago, may'be Amtrak would have enough money to replace their 30 billion year old engines!!!!!!!!1
Shame and Amtrak can't figure out why the train is losing business...HELLO!! I remember when this train had 5 coaches, lounge, diner and 2 10/6 sleepers plus baggage car.
Sometimes it has a lot of sleepers and coaches, you should see it on peak times. And on off-peak times, I once saw the Hoosier State with just one coach attached to a buffer car and two engines, no doubt they were moving one of the engines but it was still a pretty funny sight. Of course Hoosier State is just local service though. It is a fun train to ride.
once on an eastbound cardinal the train was really long at least 10 cars, there were three engines. It was right after October break and there were at least 3 cars of students going to Purdue.
Thanks...after I read your post, I looked at some other Youtube postings of the Cardinal, and you are right...it's the exact same consist in other videos as well. It's odd that the Cardinal is one of the shorter long-distance trains, but that it runs a really slow, long, circuitous route between New York and Chicago. I suppose ridership is the reason. (Also, it's rather difficult to sequence a tri-weekly train into any vacation schedule.)

Amtrak tried adding more cars to the consist but the kept derailing around the curves in the virginia mountains,

With gas prices the way they're going, and airline tickets through the roof, I think Amtrak trains may start to see an increase in ridership soon.

Even if they didnt build new loco's I still say they shuld find a new track for it like toward the cities more. mayb they wuld increase buissness
