What you are seeing is not a 100% real "VW PASSAT" but a mocked up version of the Czech built SKODA SUPERB. Vee-Dub did a good gob: invest $1b in a new factory in the US to built SKODA SUPERBs and (re)badge them as VW PASSATs and sell them for just under $20k. The 2.5 V5 170HP is obsolete, the 3.6 FSI 280HP is too "Un-American" and the 2.0 TDI 140 HP too weak. Enjoy your "new" PASSAT's...!!!

Actually, you're somewhat wrong. Europe has yet to receive a new version of the Passat. They just have a slightly facelifted model of the last gen(new front and rear-end, which is what is found on the NA model).
@iggibars just look at the engines that European Passat uses and compare. You dont get any of them. That 5 cylinder engine was used in VW in Europe 10 years ago.
@a6km, So what? Everyone in europe has different engines, and almost all of those engines are variants of slow diesels...we don't give a fuck about those. You could bring them here just to watch sales fail miserably. There's a reason why VW does that!
As for the 2.5 v5, it's NOT the same engine as it was 10 years ago...you just don't know any better.
@iggibars i wasnt comparing diesel to a petrol engine but trust me we got 170 hp diesels here that go faster and got way more torque then a 2.5 liter V5 and have miles better fuel economy plus the new generations of turbo charged petrol engines up to 210 ps or the 300ps V6 the reason why VW isnt bringing the TDI and TSI technology over is that USA is not ready for them. Another example look at the Jetta rear suspension in USA and rest of the world. You will see a huge difference.
@a6km, You are clearly just looking at paper specs and coming to delusional conclusions. The NA market has different fuel emission requirements! How the hell do you not know this already?? That's why we don't get most of the engines! That 300BHP found in the passat is the same engine that is here, but since it has to meet different fuel requirement, it also loses power. Damn, learn a thing or two before you post. As for the Jetta, it's the NA model, what do you expect??? Seen the previous jetta?
@a6km Also, I would love to be able to have the full range of engines, or have the same exact emission regulations, but were are two completely different continents. I could also care less about those tiny diesels, the ones that are available here are the ones I would pick anyways. The only cars I care about that we can't get here is the GTD, the Phaeton 3.0TDI, and the Touareg 4.2TDI.
Why is Volkswagen so pumped up about some new Fender set-up they've put in the Beetle and the Passat? It's silly. And who cares? What Volkswagen fans want are good cars--not some ridiculously top-notch audio system.
@thetwopointslow Exactly. When I get in a car and drive for a bit, I don't think "Hmmmm... Well, it has a really nice stereo..." That's really showing how bad the rest of the car is. I want handling, interior quality, and overall good feel of the car.
Why the hell is this just a guy working for VW? It doesn't help if you do a review on yourself. That's just pathetic and it makes no sense. If you want people to know it was reviewed have people not part of VW review it and film it.
Remember this Volkswagen when I tell you... my first car MUST BE my favorite VW car of all time... after 2 years, I WILL buy my very first car... a VW Passat. :)

And the European version is light years ahead from the USA Passat, and yes they look the same but thats the only thing they have in common.

Apparently even the curmudgeonly Car and Driver folks preferred the Passat to the Hyundai Sonata and Honda Accord - quite high praise indeed!
