If we increase the mortgage interest tax credit, we increase both the value of homes, and the amount of disposable income homeowners have to spend. We also induce more people who can afford to own to buy them, and make it easier for banks to unwind their overexposure.

Why borrow dollars today to give to banks when we can dump just as much money into the economy by leaving homeowners free to spend more of their present income.

The main reason I think they should increase it so they can get rid of it. It really isn't fair and should be phased out. This seems like an excellent way to do that--first by increasing it, but then phasing it out over 30 years or so.

About 1/3 of us own our homes outright, about 1/3 rent, and 1/3 have mortgages. This approach would enable the banks to write a lot of new loans to the folks who don't have mortgages but could easily afford them and would for the tax credit.

What kind of people can do that? Now we know the answer.

Couldn't they simply propose different things? That they haven't is proof that they have no idea of what they are doing. It is insane. It doesn't seem possible. Still the evidence is before our eyes. I can only hope Obama is able to work without them. He should ignore them. Hopefully in a couple of years things will be good enough that people will vote Democrat and kick enough Republicans out to make governing easy.

Yes, 8:37 is on the money. That issue points to why it's useless to slam either party. There's just one party--the $ party. In ALL gov't matters follow the $.

Watching The Money Masters or The Creature from Jekyll Island clears this up pretty well.

Then when listening to economists, it's easier to read the sub-context of the one $ party, into the discussion. Stiglitz & Phelps obviously know this, There's only so much they can say on TV.

they ruined it with alot of things and now repub govs are trying to ruin it with their refusing of funds that can help citizens live in these times and help create or at least keep jobs in a time when job loss is still rising without the funds.

People like jindall forget that without workers theres no taxes to pay budgets. So they may not have to pay back the money they dont take or the programs they dont enhance, but they also lose even more than 100mil in taxes over 2 years also.
