  • Gonna post this on my Facebook ' wall ' in memory of ' Delta Dawn ' ( Blues DJ @ NEC Hennika NH ) on the anniversary of her passing 12-15-07.

    Thank you Mr Guthrie.

  • Wonderful! I have seen him do this, but don't have a video. This is excellent audio after the singing starts. Thanks so much!

  • Nice treatment of this classic, Mr. Guthrie!

  • This is harmony!!!

  • Jim Morrison could carry this song like no one else

  • hello from switzerland,

that's a version which i like very much! Wonderful horns, great voice!!!! Great song!

    Peter Tschirky

  • This guy is an American treasure....I love his music!!

  • They got some heavy cats on the horns.

  • 1001abcdable :

    Amen,Bobby "Blue"Bland.

    that is the ticket!!

  • may i suggest bobby bland version?

  • will you come to Greece? please?

  • Love this vid ARLO IS THE LEGEND OF FOLK SONGS (to me anyway)

  • He is a LEGEND !!!! period

  • I like the call and response section. The clarinet almost nailed it.

  • i have to learn how to play this on guitar as my next song at school

it's a fun and easy song to play

  • good but nowhere near Joe Cocker version

  • Nice horns!! That trumpet just screams! Well placed emotion in a dark song!

  • Terrific rendition , my all time favorite

  • Bob Dylan's 'Blind Willie McTell' is very much based on this song's chord sequence.

  • The trumpet seems WAY hot (but he plays it well!), but the rest balances out perfectly. Clarinet adds just the right character!

    Great performance overall!

  • Pretty good of course

  • Very very nice and well done

  • That's perfect.

  • merci jackie et arlo

  • He played this last night in Galway, was excellent. Thanks for posting it

  • It's a very old song--St James Hospital was torn down in 1532. The original song title was "The Unfortunate Rake", but the same song (opening "As I was a-walking down by St. James' Hospital...").

The original English tune and a very corrupted version of the lyrics make up the country song Streets of Laredo. The St James Infirmary tune is different, but you can see how it evolved since there's a Cajun version (Blues de Soulard) that has a tune midway between the Rake tune and the Infirmary one

  • check out Jerry Reed's version

  • EXCELLENT!!!! What a great example of bluesy instrumental work and Arlo's voice! Captures all this song should be! Thanks for posting!

  • He did this song on XM Radio. they did an Arlo special one night and this was one of his songs!!

  • It is credited to Irving Mills, AKA Joe Primrose. Irving and his brother owned a music publsihing company based in New York. They had Cab Calloway and Duke Ellington contracted to their company, and they had a interest in the Cotton Club where Calloway was a headline act for part of the 1920s and 1930s.

  • This is a very good version. Nice and Jazzy.

Arlo plays a nice guitar. Similar to Turk Murphys 1952 version

    Jack Montreal

  • Yeaaa...He does a great rendition of this. Actually, this song is close to 100 years old for those who think this is new. Lots of variations have been made. Check out Roger McGuinn's version of this also! Thanks for a great vid Jguth3!!

  • why is this song new to me; i though i knew them all...zank che you tube !

  • sweet and sad and not at all crazy

  • Wow, I love this song....never thought Arlo

would cover it!!! And so movingly well!

Thanks so much for sharing jguth3!!!

(I thought the Kravits Center was in West

    Palm Beach?!)

  • Lily Tomlin did a version of St. James Infirmary on Saturday Night Live a long time ago. Very funny version. Can't find it though.

  • isnt this song from joe primrose?

  • Man, I love this video. I grew up hearing this song on the record player - Cab Calloway. In my opinion though, Arlo sings it right into my soul. And Frank and Matt are great. This is the best. I could just listen to this over and over.

  • The song is an old dixie number that was recorded first by Louis Armstrong in 1928, and a millions others since.

  • Cool, this whole time I actually thought Cab Calloway first performed it since he made it famous.

  • no. nobody knows who actually wrote this song...

  • Really just the best! Did Woody write the words to this song?

  • Man that was OOOOOOOOOOOhheeeeeeee maxthevid

  • Though it isn't as good as the Cab Calloway version it was still really good. I enjoyed it.

  • Saw this show at Disney Hall in Los Angeles and it was incredible! Bravo Guthrie!

  • that was freaking wickid...who are these guys

  • Nice video! The Kravis Center is not in Miami though, it is in West Palm Beach.

  • Oops, thank-you

  • Unbeleivable...BRAVO

  • Sooooo smooth!

  • Whow!!!!

  • Bravo! Another crossing of paths by the Guthries and the Klezmatics . . . doesn't get any better than that!
