4 Years later and all i hear is "We Want D3 release date!!"
I have played both the previous diablo games and loved them but i welcome this change. There is still mood in the game through sound but atleast now it looks nicer then a bland looking landscape. If you dont like it thats fine, but many of us diablo veterans do so go cry about something else.
im in the beta .. they only seemed to show the lands above the dungeon crawls.. and the first act is dark as hell with tons of zombies... and then the cathedral is all gothic... why dont people just look past their noses

I only see another of those childish fantasy adventure games. I love Diablo I and II mainly because they're dark, serious, and mature games. That dark feeling is what made Diablo so unique. And now it's all gone.

open your eyes people diablo 2 wasn't as dark as you remember it to be. the only thing that could be tweaked is the scenery it needs to be more diablo esque with corpses and mutilated bodies and pentagrams and all that shit. I don't agree with the people complaining about the brightness of the spells though, spells in D2 were quite colorful and stood out in comparison to the environment.

They have stated that this color change was made on purpose to show the atmosphere of the game in the form that as the story develops, things start to get worse and the atmosphere darkens
Just shut up and enjoy the game. I don't want to wait another 10 years for it to come out. You're asking them to completely redesign how the ENTIRE game looks. That's pretty much an entire game being remade. It looks fine, when you're outside and it's daytime, no shit, it's going to look bright, and colorful. When you're inside a dungeon or it's nighttime, it's going to be darker, and more somber. Look at the demon hunter gameplay, the dungeon she's in is blood red and dark. It's just some parts

His tone of voice and attitude torwards the obvious (as in fact) change in graphics is telling me that Blizzard simply doesn't care anymore. They've accumilated a fat cash cow in W.O.W. and now that they know what "formula" reaches maximum sales they simply don't care about artistic integrety. Anyone who defends the graphics saying things like, "it's so everyone can enjoy the game" is deluded. This is a fact.

SC2 art is nothing like WOW. Maybe it was in early Alpha stages, but not in the final product. But you most likely refused to even take a look at the final product, after you saw the undeveloped alpha models.

It's not just the colour palette that is bad. I seriously think the cinematic's are way too.. gay. Diablo 2 had kickass cinematics that were done beautifully! But the trailers I see.. it's like they went backwards.

@shadowgeyser My grass does resemble that from diablo 2, my trees do reflect the type of colors that that diablo 2 used. At night! Maybe I forgot to mention that act 1 and 3 of diablo 2 were both night-time/evening settings. What we've seen of the game's outside setting so far has been day-time. Of course thing's aren't going to be darker, because it's not a night setting.
@shadowgeyser I still don't understand where you come with darker being more realistic. I don't know if you spend much time outside, but temperate/forested areas have bright/vibrant greens/colors. D2 was so dark in some areas because *drumroll* Those particular acts were in a nighttime setting! This isn't the Diablo 1 universe, or the Daiblo 2 universe. It's the Diablo 3 universe, where forested areas are in a daytime setting. Be glad you're even getting a Diablo 3.
Oh my, He even used Lut Gholein as a comparison to what we've seen so far. Yes, The Lut Gholein does look bright, and more realistic than what is portrayed in these comparison videos. Why? Because it's a desert. Why are things brighter in the desert? Because the sun shines brighter/hotter there. Comparing desert to temperate/forest is just ridiculous. Look at the monk gameplay videos. Desert setting, Some bright areas, some not bright areas. Looks much better than diablo 2's Lut gholein.

The witchdoctor and wizard are spell casters, not damn melee characters, they aren't supposed to be Buff MchugeMuscles. Diablo 2 was darker, there's no getting around it, it just plain used darker colors. I'll admit this my agreement to this. You may not be specifically saying "I want darker colors", but using diablo 2 as a comparison does.

sure i remember the dark colours but also the verry bright colours ,and this shot is of the forst zone ...yeah sure the first zone of diablo was dark but they intend to get it darker and darker... play diablo 2 again and compare it with part 3 and them make an objective observation
Hate the new graphics. I played through the first two games in solo mode solely because of the atmosphere the games immersed me in. To be honest, I'm not sure if I was ever even closed to amazed by any aspect of the game mechanics etc... it was the Gothic graphics and storyline that kept me coming back for more.
I might check it out after it comes out, but at the way its looking, I'll be as excited for it as any other 'ol game i've bought. [ Not like SC2 :o ]

The initial diablo games were so great because they were psychologically macabre and intense - this atmosphere was created by the aesthetic of the games and the music. Blizzard has made a choice (that it will no doubt stick with) to abandon the gothic atmosphere rather then enhance it. This is a creative mistake of the same magnitude as the addition of Jar Jar Binks and Hayden Christiansen to Star Wars
Realism... lol - it's a computer game. Diablo 1 was dark because it used a limited amount of colours and was limited to a tiny resolution... Diablo 2 was made with sprites and at maximum has thousands of colours. This engine incorporates potentially millions of variations of colours so your whining about the colours not being "real" is pretty moot. With more colour options, comes more colour depth and "realism". If u dont like the game, dont buy it. I am and ill be laughing at peeps like u
one thing you might want to consider is why they chose a slightly more cartoony look. In 3D, it makes it easier to distinguish one thing from another.
Aside from that, i really don't see why people think it looks cartoony. the proportions are pretty normal looking to me.
also, in a way, the fact they changed some of the system is a good thing. For instance, instead of constantly managing potions, the game keeps the action moving

D2 is a old game, and the people aren't arguing about the graphics at all, is more about the style used. Ther colorfull world and all.
IMO, the world will go darker and darker as you progress. We can't forget that the three prime evils were slain in Diablo 2, so the world is at peace.
Anyway, the game will probably have the option to change the graphics colorness. The fans will release some patchs to get the game look darker too. So I'm more concerned about the game runing on my old pc.

While I agree that D3 seems to lack the Gothic feel of the previous games, I do not believe it's due to the darkness of the palette. Go back to D2 and look at Acts 2 and 3. Both are quite bright and colorful.
Furthermore, we haven't seen a lot of the game. I've read that it'll start bright and get progressively darker as you plummet deeper into the depths of Hell... which sounds darn cool if you ask me!
Huh... that's a very good point. The texture styles aren't realistic enough to give it that gothic feel. I'm guessing they decided to go w/ the textures they have because it helps make things stand out. Something along the lines of reasoning they used in their podcast about gold colored fonts -- they said gold was too hard to read for color-blind people and thus opted for purple.

The Art direction in Warcraft, even for World of Warcraft, are beautiful by the pallete colors and lighter tones, and I'm really fine with it. It offers a fantasy/ epic feeling

Starcraft 2 early alpha (the protoss and terran demonstration videos) looks way unpolished and raw than the final game. Something tells me however, that the people who played Diablo, played it for the gameplay and not for the looks. A Blizzard's game life span is 10 times longer than a Cod game.

If you want to insult us, then at least correctly understand what we're bitching about in the first place. It's not about literal color, but THEME. Diablo 3 lacks "AND THE HEAVENS WILL TREMBLE" (advertising quote for the game) theme.
Well its true, its not graphically consistent with the originals. The previous games were gothy, color pallets that enhanced the feeling of dread in a world of the undead, demons and battle vs good and evil. Diablo 3, done by different developers, wants to drop all that. More lights, way too many colors, its like goth turning into pop. Thats the sad reality of it, and nothing can be done.
Fuck no thats going to put the game off 2 more years, they would have to start from scratch and would just end up dumping the D3 like they already did once before. I used to respect blizzard because of their great games and such. Reading these interviews it seems to me that it's about money, not about art, dedication to their true fans and a game's legacy. If it doesn't feel like Diablo, it's not a worthy follower of the Diablo series... They've done the same thing with SC2.

Just shut up and enjoy the game. I don't want to wait another 10 years for it to come out. You're asking them to completely redesign how the ENTIRE game looks. That's pretty much an entire game being remade. It looks fine, when you're outside and it's daytime, no shit, it's going to look bright, and colorful. When you're inside a dungeon or it's nighttime, it's going to be darker, and more somber. Look at the demon hunter gameplay, the dungeon she's in is blood red and dark. It's just some parts

His tone of voice and attitude torwards the obvious (as in fact) change in graphics is telling me that Blizzard simply doesn't care anymore. They've accumilated a fat cash cow in W.O.W. and now that they know what "formula" reaches maximum sales they simply don't care about artistic integrety. @shadowgeyser My grass does resemble that from diablo 2, my trees do reflect the type of colors that that diablo 2 used. At night! Maybe I forgot to mention that act 1 and 3 of diablo 2 were both night-time/evening settings. What we've seen of the game's outside setting so far has been day-time. Of course thing's aren't going to be darker, because it's not a night setting.

@shadowgeyser I still don't understand where you come with darker being more realistic. I don't know if you spend much time outside, but temperate/forested areas have bright/vibrant greens/colors. D2 was so dark in some areas because *drumroll* Those particular acts were in a nighttime setting! This isn't the Diablo 1 universe, or the Daiblo 2 universe. It's the Diablo 3 universe, where forested areas are in a daytime setting. Be glad you're even getting a Diablo 3.

Oh my, He even used Lut Gholein as a comparison to what we've seen so far. Yes, The Lut Gholein does look bright, and more realistic than what is portrayed in these comparison videos. Why? Because it's a desert. Why are things brighter in the desert? Because the sun shines brighter/hotter there. Comparing desert to temperate/forest is just ridiculous. Look at the monk gameplay videos. Desert setting, Some bright areas, some not bright areas. Looks much better than diablo 2's Lut gholein.

@shadowgeyser I read Madmax's comment and I was unable to take it seriously after he stated the characters looked weak. How does the barbarian look weak? The witchdoctor and wizard are spell casters, not damn melee characters, they aren't supposed to be Buff MchugeMuscles. Diablo 2 was darker, there's no getting around it, it just plain used darker colors. I'll admit this my agreement to this. You may not be specifically saying "I want darker colors", but using diablo 2 as a comparison does.

Bottom line is. No one is forcing anyone to buy or play this game. Don't like what blizzard did with the colors? Great, in the words of christian bale "OHHHH, GOOD FOR YOU!!" Don't buy the game then, and by all means, don't play it if it's going to ruin your life that much. Or at the very least, turn your brightness/contrast down on your monitor. Hate the new graphics. I played through the first two games in solo mode solely because of the atmosphere the games immersed me in. To be honest, I'm not sure if I was ever even closed to amazed by any aspect of the game mechanics etc... it was the Gothic graphics and storyline that kept me coming back for more.
I might check it out after it comes out, but at the way its looking, I'll be as excited for it as any other 'ol game i've bought. [ Not like SC2 :o ]

Looks fine to me. Don't know if being able to actually see the game you're playing is anything to go emo-cuttie about. Doesn't even look close to world of warcraft, ridiculous comparison. WoW looks like shit, d3 does not. Wipe the tears from your eyes and maybe you can see a bit better. Don't like it? Don't fucking buy it then. Gameplay and story make the game more so than visuals.

The initial diablo games were so great because they were psychologically macabre and intense - this atmosphere was created by the aesthetic of the games and the music. Blizzard has made a choice (that it will no doubt stick with) to abandon the gothic atmosphere rather then enhance it. This is a creative mistake of the same magnitude as the addition of Jar Jar Binks and Hayden Christiansen to Star Wars

Realism... lol - it's a computer game. Diablo 1 was dark because it used a limited amount of colours and was limited to a tiny resolution... Diablo 2 was made with sprites and at maximum has thousands of colours. This engine incorporates potentially millions of variations of colours so your whining about the colours not being "real" is pretty moot. one thing you might want to consider is why they chose a slightly more cartoony look. In 3D, it makes it easier to distinguish one thing from another.
Aside from that, i really don't see why people think it looks cartoony. the proportions are pretty normal looking to me.
also, in a way, the fact they changed some of the system is a good thing. For instance, instead of constantly managing potions, the game keeps the action moving

D2 is a old game, and the people aren't arguing about the graphics at all, is more about the style used. Ther colorfull world and all.
IMO, the world will go darker and darker as you progress. We can't forget that the three prime evils were slain in Diablo 2, so the world is at peace.
Anyway, the game will probably have the option to change the graphics colorness. The fans will release some patchs to get the game look darker too. So I'm more concerned about the game runing on my old pc.

While I agree that D3 seems to lack the Gothic feel of the previous games, I do not believe it's due to the darkness of the palette. Go back to D2 and look at Acts 2 and 3. Both are quite bright and colorful.
Furthermore, we haven't seen a lot of the game. I've read that it'll start bright and get progressively darker as you plummet deeper into the depths of Hell... which sounds darn cool if you ask me!

Huh... that's a very good point. The texture styles aren't realistic enough to give it that gothic feel. I'm guessing they decided to go w/ the textures they have because it helps make things stand out. Something along the lines of reasoning they used in their podcast about gold colored fonts -- they said gold was too hard to read for color-blind people and thus opted for purple.

The Art direction in Warcraft, even for World of Warcraft, are beautiful by the pallete colors and lighter tones, and I'm really fine with it. It offers a fantasy/ epic feeling
Diablo, however, is more dark and grittier compared to to its fantasy counterpart, as if the world is forever damned.

@Kalfus2007 they said the game starts out with rich environments and then gets more and more evil looking. I think it isn't fair to judge the whole look of the game solely on this pre alpha trailer. Starcraft 2 early alpha (the protoss and terran demonstration videos) looks way unpolished and raw than the final game. Something tells me however, that the people who played Diablo, played it for the gameplay and not for the looks. A Blizzard's game life span is 10 times longer than a Cod game.

Well its true, its not graphically consistent with the originals. The previous games were gothy, color pallets that enhanced the feeling of dread in a world of the undead, demons and battle vs good and evil. Diablo 3, done by different developers, wants to drop all that. More lights, way too many colors, its like goth turning into pop. Thats the sad reality of it, and nothing can be done.

Diablo 3 is horrible, everything they do, is just to make it more like wow.
Autostats, and class armor.. Thats possibly the worst thing.. everyone character will be non-unique, just like world of penis

I used to respect blizzard because of their great games and such. Reading these interviews it seems to me that it's about money, not about art, dedication to their true fans and a game's legacy. If it doesn't feel like Diablo, it's not a worthy follower of the Diablo series... They've done the same thing with SC2.

Ok, I'm not a Diablo fan, but I can understand that people don't like the style of the game being changed, it pissed them off, which is natural. I'm an old WarCraft fan and I know what it means to change the style especially the TYPES of games. I've been playing WC since "Orcs and Humans" and now I play WoW, didn't miss out on any sequel, and believe me it SUCKS to change game styles, it would've been so much better if WC remained a RTS game but, no one gives a crap, especially not Blizz...

"blizzard" is developing the game, not "blizzard north". the game has completly different developers. so to correct you on that, blizzard doesnt really own the diablo franchise.

yea, i agree that the colors are way to vibrant for diablo series. the dark tone was one of the characteristics that set diablo apart from many other action rpgs like untold legends. And, although out of subject, i think starcraft 2 is also slightly off the mark in the graphics department...
