  • I also have another question for you. Are any of these movies still in the Turner library?

  • @christiantysoe No. Like all movies aired on TV, TV/cable networks license them for a limited time. The U.S rights to the actual movies are in limbo I believe, as the companies who've owned them over the years (Streamline Pictures, Urban Vision) have gone under.

  • I remember this. So happy I found it. I bet they censored the hell out of VHD. I also remember watching G-Force and Speed Racer around 1995-97 in the late hours. Cartoon Network was a huge part of my childhood.

  • @ASurrealEntity According to some sources yes, VHD was hacked pretty badly. The TV cut that aired on Turner's networks during the early-to-mid-1990's was said to have edited out most of the violence and suggestive content, leaving just a lot of dialogue.

  • Tim and Eric RULES ALL OF YOUR ASSES! COACHELLA STRUT BETTER THAN CEE-LO!!!!!!!!!

  • THIS is what got me into Anime!!!!

  • First time anime was ever shown on Cartoon Network, even before Toonami.

  • I remember this it was awesome. had seen vampire hunter d before hand but the other two were just as great, twilight of cockroaches is one i to this day have never seen again but would love to lol, ah the memory's and the fact you'll never see them do it again

  • geschissenes Video

  • I remember watching this when it originally aired in 1995. Those were the days, back when Cartoon Network WAS cool.

  • yes yes, I saw it and it was good. it was raw and uncut

  • They actually had Vampire Hunter D on CN one time!?

  • HOLY !@#$# I REMEMBER THAT!!!! thanks for the memories.

p.s. what is twilight of the cockroches about? i never saw that anime or even herd about it . but nice video

  • I did not know that Vampire Hunter D was on Cartoon Network but they did show Vampire Hunter D on Straz.

  • Although I'm sure they did this in 1993, too, because I was 12 at the time (I would have been 14 in '95) and they called it Japananimation Invasion or something like that.

  • Love it! That's how I got introduced to anime at the age of 12 when I watched Vampire Hunter D on this premiere and had my mind blown!

  • @phubans

Me too i was 12 back in 93 and also watched these with Heavy Metal, American Pop and Robot Carnival on TBS as these movies ruled my world.

  • @Johnlindsey289 Yeah man! That's when I saw them, too... Remember Twilight of the Cockroaches? I can't find that anywhere.

  • @phubans

    It's on youtube

  • A precursor to Adult Swim or Toonami.

I didn't have Cartoon Network back then (or in the 1990s/early 2000s) due to living in a small Massachusetts town with a cable company just giving us basic cable.

  • I remember watching Vampire Hunter D and Twilight of the Cockoroaches. I remember than Secret Squirrel commercial promotition of it through there was little anime on CN (through G Force was on). Anime on CN was good till they got rid of most of it recently and haven't had nothing new for awhile.

  • Was Vampire D edited for Cartoon Network? Was the editing as heavy as it was when they did Evangelion for Toonami?

  • The version of "Vampire Hunter D" which was aired on this special was an existing, edited TV cut that had previously aired on TBS. Supposedly a lot of the violence, and fighting scenes were cut out. All nudity was cut out as well. I saw the uncut VHD (on Showtime I believe) a couple of years ago, and I saw some things which couldn't have aired on Cartoon Network, or even Adult Swim. Sci-Fi Channel, in the '90's aired less edited versions of these films.

  • I still find it funny that they would air a heavily cut version of the movie at midnight.

Btw, do you remember if the rating was TV-Y7 FV, or TV-PG.

  • The TV ratings system wasn't in effect back in 1995. But I imagine that it'd be around the Y7-PG range if rated today.

Even though it was supposedly heavily edited (the other two movies, which I barely recall, weren't edited as much. "Robot Carnival", given its non-violent nature shouldn't have been edited at all.), CN still aired VHD and the other two movies late at night because anime was uncharted territory for CN back in '95. Think of this "experiment" as a precursor to today's Adult Swim

  • @SuperAdventures HOLY SHIT!!!!!!! i remember that, i was 7 years old when i saw that promo, but the show that made me an anime fan was by all means SAILOR MOON. i am with an anime club, and they said that i should have watched dragon ball z, but guess what, both sailor moon and dragon ball z were my favorite animes, now it is 2010 and you hardly ever see any good anime on tv nowadays, (some not made in japan but in canada or even the US)

  • A quote from an archived' 90's site regarding Turner's TV cut of VHD:

" To make Vampire Hunter D more appealing to the American

audience, Turner Broadcasting System edited certain parts of the

film that they, in their infinite wisdom, believed would be

offensive. This included all forms of nudity, so the three

sisters' hair strategically covered their breasts, the shower

scene never appeared, and Doris' breast stayed where it was when

Dr. Peringo grabbed the cross from her neck.

  • I honestly don't know why TBS would do that considering the amount of viewers back in the 90's weren't as much as they were in the early 2000's.

  • 1995? Ack I was just a few years too young. I would have loved this. They'd never do stuff like this now =(

  • Oh, also, is that narration by Joel Goddard? I think it is.

  • Ken Osborne. He was one of the main CN VA's back then, specifically for action show promos.

  • This was when I first got into anime, this commercial. I stayed up and watched them, then found the Saturday Morning anime on Sci Fi. The rest is history.

Still a huge fan of VHD -- the original novels by Hideyuki Kikuchi with art by Yoshitaka Amano are now being translated and released by Dark Horse if you want to check them out.

  • i remember getting so excited about this when these originally ran. i missed twilight of the cockroaches and still have never seen it, but the others two i still continue to enjoy

  • Really? When do you recall seeing "A Night of Japanimation"? This special aired on the last Saturday/Sunday of January 1995. It also aired again (same three movies) sometime in June/July 1995, as "Saturday Japanime", which is when I caught the movies for myself.

  • WOW...I remember that back in the day, happy times.

My bro and I watched "Twilight of the Cockroaches." I still remember the scene with the talking turd too.

  • From what I remember, that was the second anime special CN had featuring those three movies. The first was "A Night of Japanimation". Man, those were the days! Those three movies are like art masterpieces compared to some of the anime they show now!

  • I happily sat up and watched them all-I was 19. I miss the old Cartoon Network. They should have a CN 2 that plays all the old stuff.

  • isn't boomerang something like that

  • damn i most have been too young too reamember this this was the shit back in the day old cn needs to come back damn it!!!

  • Mein childehooden!

  • I don't remember this at all and i've been watchin cartoon network since I was a kid. Well, I used to watch cartoon network but you know the usual thing after toonami was going downhill and then toonami stopped existing is about when I stopped. Though I really am surprised something like Vampire D on CN? These were some classic anime but I remember them to be quite bloody but I guess that's why they are on at 12pm.

  • This was even before toonami really started.

  • Not so much of a good memory for me: I was 10 years old, wanting to watch it...but my mom wouldn't let me. Now, along with you guys...I feel as if we're the few who were into anime before it became popular.

P.S. I'm going to watch those movies now, heh.

  • I had the same experience

  • Oh god, I remember this promo. Come to think of it, I think it was the first time I saw anime back then.

  • I recall seeing this promo before.

  • Can anyone tell me which movie the clip 0:03 - 0:05 is from?

I've only seen Vampire Hunter D and these others look very interesting.

Cartoon Network is so far past its prime now that its sad.

  • 0:03-0:05 is robot carnival, it was a series of animated shorts involving robots created by japan's top animators.

  • Thanks a lot!

  • :deep, heavy, nostalgic sigh:

  • Yeah, it brought back memories, though I am glad I missed D back then (due to it being heavily edited down). Still, wish those three Animes would've been seen again.

  • This brings back soooo many memories

    Thanks!!!

  • I remember this promo. This is when CN debut Japanese anime with this promo.

  • Anyone have a copy of the TBS cut of VHD they can upload? I just searched for it and got nothing.

  • Wow this was before Adult Swim/Toonami rule Saturday nights wow history indeed.

  • LOLOL, I remember this. Vampire Hunter D freaked me out (omg bad words!!1) and the other two put me to sleep. I was ten. :P

  • I remember this promo when I was young. By that time, I didn't knew what anime was. I've never watch any of those movie. But I can tell this is how CN got into anime, even mature one. I think this is how it led to the creation of Toonami and Adult Swim. I wish Adult Swim or ani-monday can show these again for childhood purpose.

  • VAMPIRE HUNTER D WAS ON CARTOON NETWORK??? WHAT YEAR WAS THIS?? I feel like I've been deprived of a rewarding childhood.

  • Somebody upload twilight Im always looking for it here!!!

  • AWESOME!!! I used to have all 3 recorded on a VHS tape as well, but it bit the dust long ago. I wish I could find Twilight of the Cockroaches somewhere. I really loved that movie.

  • Lol, I remember this. I recorded all 3 animes they aired. The 3rd one was about roaches that where animated, but the was more live action. Memories.....

  • Cool, do you still have the recordings? If so upload them!
