this guy is only doing a very detailed version (and very useful) way of changing strings on a floyd-rose style tremolo. I have an Ibanez with their version of a Floyd and I love it! I personally don't like messing around with them but when it came down to resetting the bridge, it was not easy but after many rounds of trial and error i finally got it. This is the best way of doing it, he knows what he's doing.
If you're having trouble keeping the bridge level with the body while your putting the strings in, use a thin piece of cardboard. Lift up the bridge with your whammy and slide the cardboard under it at the back. Makes a big difference and keeps both of your hands free :)
Good tutorial. Should you use .09 strings with a Floyd Rose or does it not matter? Also, is there any string height adjustment on this bridge like on a Strat or LP type bridge? Thanx.
@kammhron ih you use heavy atrings, you would tighten the springs in the back, if you use lighter strings, you loosen the springs in the back. and the string action can be set by the 2 things that hold the bridge.
my saddle on my 6th string gets angled when i tighten it with the string in it.. and when i tighten it at the headstock, it comes out at the floyd rose end. any suggestions? can't get it to fit.
I can get my tremolo tight enough its still raised about 15 degree angle, i've tried using a screwdriver to tighten it and it wont budge, any advice mate? cheers craig
the locking nuts at the top of the neck of my guitar are missing. i baught it from a friend like that and i just need to know if i can buy the lock nuts seperate and how much it would run me?
The nuts on the top of the neck on my guitar are tightened in place when i try to unscrew them with the Allen wrench the wrench corners scrape off and it becomes round. Is there anyway to unscrew them?
@OMGZORROHAXX If you manage to remove the screws with a hex key or if you have to resort to vice grips (which will gouge the screw heads making them unsightly) either method that works regardless you should replace the screws as the failed attempts with hex keys has undoubtedly done some damage to the hex hole on your screws, you can pick them up at any music store for next to nothing, good luck!
when i get my floyd guitar in tune, and i pull up on the whammy, the strings keep slipping off the saddles no matter how tight i wind the saddle screws. what should i do?
@BjAeLsDsEe1 sounds like to me you don't have the correct gauge of strings. like he wrote on the video here. you have to have the same gauge of strings or your going to have to adjust your spring tension, and i'm not sure what he means by intonation. I'd take it to a Store and see what they can do if this doesn't work for you
Guitar techs use strobe tuners to intonate your guitar. They're the most accurate tumers. You can check your intonation with your own tuner by playing the open string and then playing the string at the 12th fret. Do this will all of your strings. You will know if your instrument needs to be intonated if your tuning of your open string is not the same as the 12th fret. Having your guitar intonated makes a big difference when playing lead.
my D string broke off my Dime-O-Flame guitar. i got majority of the string out, but the end bit is still there in the bridge, and i dont know how to get it out, its sharp and sticking slightly out but i cant pull it or anything.
THank youu!!! i was stretching my strings on a brand new schecter and the b string broke off at the saddle and i had no clue how to change the string!! hopefully i didnt screw up the guitar but i have a new string in thanks to you!
@TheBrandonliteyr it's time consuming no doubt. But their worth the time. I play by myself 3 or 4 hours a day and maybe have to tune one. If i don't tune down or up half a step.
thanks man i was having trouble understanding my floyd rose for so long i would tune and tighten my fret locks and not even knwo that the knobs at the bottom were fine tuning knobs coulda used a little logic to find thta out but i guess im a newbie haha by the way do u have a video or any tips on reducing or eliminating feedback ?
No, what he said is that furniture polish can contain too much wax. Using a pure lemon oil (no wax or silicone additives - read the label carefully!) is fine for fretboards.
i hate my friend. he replaced the strings i was about to string up with with slinkies. i tuned up. played one barre chord and WONK! gets all stretched out at the bottom. DAMMIT!
Great lesson as usual Andrew. Why do some lessons say to have the bridge slightly raised up from the body eg 1.75 mm and others say make sure the trem claw is 1.4 cms away from the body ( ie screw length ). This is very confusing. How does this all effect intonation also. Sorry just blown a fuse but love the vid's. Regards
I recently changed strings on my guitar with Floyd Rose system, and the strings are now to close to the frets. The frets won't affect the note, and each string is just one note as the string keep hitting the fretboard metal when it's hit. This have never happened before, and I don't know how to fix it. feels like i've tried everything
Hello Andrew, I need some advice please. I don't think my guitar accommodates a Floyd Rose Tremolo System for it has never had one (I got it second hand as a project) I saw on your video that the body of your guitar has a small rectangular cut out behind where a normal bridge would go, would I have to take my guitar to a specialist to get this rectangle cut out to fit the system? Or can I just leave it as it is? Thankyou
Hey Andrew, and anyone else that might answer, I have a question. Why do you want the tremolo to be flush with the guitar when you put your strings in the tremolo?
i ve watched this video at least 10 times but i still cant find the reason why when i put the strings everything looks ok but then the string goes off the saddle i put it again but the same thing happens what am i doing wrong?
@Harvester66633 I think you dont have the string fully and flush against the wall in which the saddleblock is pushing up against. Remember to use his palm method, hold the string firmly in place against the wall whilst turning the peg at the end of your bridge. Hope it helped bud...I was going through the same thing. Just caught myself being lazy lol
@Aydenjk i've been thinking of getting a floyd rose guitar, and after watching this i would rather not have a floyd rose :/ rather just bend the string to produce a whammy xD
This is the most helpful video i have seen!!! I got a b.c rich NJ series Warlock that has a floyd. And every time i had a string break, i had to take it into my local music store and have them restring it!!! But now i can just do it at home!!!! Thanks man for uploading this!!!!
@extremekid2008 Your spring tension may be too tight, causing you to tune normal, but when the floyd rose pulls back, it over tightens and snaps the string. I hope this will help.
hello sir, i wanted to ask beacue i havnt seen any videos on youtube on how to do this but could you please do a video on how to tune a flyod rose to drop C please that would help me and im pretty sure a lot of others out a lot please?
@TheMetalhead804 you have to adjust your strings and its a pain in the arse..... probably better off taking it to a guitar shop if you are planning to leave it in Drop C permanently
I've heard that you can also use a deck of playing cards to keep the whammy unit depressed while you restring it. Would you ever recommend doing this?
i thought you were supposed to wind the string around the post THEN put it through the hole, not the other way around. i have been doing that for all 4 years ive been playing. have i been doing it wrong this whole time?
i'm scared shitless to do this, what if i dont tighten my floyd alan wrenches on the bridge tight enough? ill tune the guitar and the string might hit me in the eye lol. i know, sounds funny but i'm not used to restringing floyds.
um i just got a guitar with a floyd an i broke the high e an tried 2 replace it an i tuned it an it slipped an i tried again an i got it as tight as i could an the same thing happened y is this?
Thanks for the video. I just bought a Kramer Striker 211 Custom yesterday. I also bought a set of the new Helix HD strings from Dean Markley, but I had no idea on how to change them. Thanks again :)
Just watching this makes me anxious. I HATE changing strings on my FR's, especially when changing tunings and having to adjust the springs. I think the first time I did it, it took me a week of tinkering.
@mathszka you have so raise the Trembelo using the allan key there should be a little spot above the whammy bar ,turn it counter clock wise do the same to other side make sure you dont go to far or else it can result in a bad way hoped i Helped PM if you need Help Dont worry i had the same Problem Bro
i have a quick question, iwas just wondering how to remove fret buzz on the first 5 frets on a guitar that has a fr. any help would be appreciated, i have tried everything.
@mathyszka Try raising the action of the strings at the bridge saddles, that normally works on most guitars to raise the string height so you can get minimum fret buzz. You could also try filing down the first five frets to reduce contact with the strings... unless you've tried that already
man i broke a string and i havent used a floyd rose till now and i realised could reuse it because it only broke near the little block thing so i just clipped it and stuck it back in its a bitch to do though haha
I know a floyd rose seams like a pain to tune but can you change tunings fast and easy, like from standard to drop c and then to Eb standard and to drop B. i like changing tunings alot and frequently
If I was worried about slight neck warping etc, could I replace each string one by one instead of taking them all of and then putting them all back on?
I got rid of my old guitar back in the 90's when floyd rose was a hot thing, simply because I hated going through all this all the time. I personally don't think Drop A or low tunings are very good for floyd rose setups, as I like a string through design best like on ESP or Schecters. Nice video Bob.
Hi I have a question. I've got my strings in my saddle blocks, and the strings through my tuning pegs. I tuned my sixth string fine but my fifth keeps popping out of the saddle block and its done this twice now and the bottom end looks like its getting stretched out. I was wondering should I try to continue on even though this has happened or will I have to go buy new strings?
Hey Andrew, need a tip. If say, when stringing the Floyd Rose and the bridge doesn't end up level to the top of the body, is there any alternative way to adjust aside from adjusting the spring claw? Noticed now that the heads to my two spring claw screws are both stripped practically to circles and thus nonadjustable. In which case, I should get replacements, but then how would I get the old ones out to begin with?
You should be able to get them out with a high-quality screw extractor bit. Go to a good wood-working shop - they'll sell you a high-quality one, (or you could try at Home Depot too).
Just got handed an old Squier Stagemaster with a Floyd Rose and been looking for a way to restring and tune it. By far the most helpful and thorough re-stringing instruction video. Thought I had everything I needed, just don't have the whammy bar and won't have one for a little while yet. Is there an easy way to tilt the bridge without one
@MJimiD you can 'block' the bridge by sticking an object (piece of wood, or a 9v battery for example) in the back of the floyd rose, keeping it parallel to the guitar.
Just wondering, instead of having to push on the whammy bar, my friend places a spoon underneath the bridge to keep it up, would that harm it in anyway? Other than scratching it.
I've always preferred placing a towel with enough fabric under the tremolo to keep it parallel to the body's surface when restringing. This frees up both hands so you don't have to do any balancing act with the tremolo bar while restringing. Also, if the fingerboard is clean, I've always felt changing one string at a time minimizes the time it takes for retuning because the tension on the tremolo remains constant throughout the process. It won't shift off the studs.
@bluehappyscrap It should tension back up on it's own. You can flip a spoon handle around and put it under the bridge to level it (on the corner between the body and bridge), Then tune it. It will help it it come up to tension sooner. The tension should be equal between the springs and strings to float the bridge. Also I run my strings backwards, ball end through the tuners. Saves a ton of pain.
Great video, thanks! After watching this I've realised my FR trem isn't set up correctly - I thought the guy at the store I bought it from was joking when he said "we weren't sure what to do with it" (!)
curious why you start with the fine-tuners half-way? I usually start mine almost all the way out because it seems like they always go flat and need to be sharpened-up.
You should see a video of Dimebag Darrel playing a guitar live with the head stone and tuners busted off and left with the floyd locking nut and the rest of the guitar.
i used to have 3 springs in my floyd rose. now i only have 2 due to my brother thinking he knew what he was doing when trying to string it a few years back. i guess the correct thing to do in order to comprimise would be to tighten the two remaining ones more? i usually have it done at the shops but its a fortune. thanks. great video.
@tabotabojayar , usually people change strings once a month. More or less depends on how frequent they play, and what strings they use.
There are some 'long-life' strings available too, these strings can stay sounds-good for a couple months. The examples are Elixir strings and D'Addario EXP.
hello there andrew....ahmmm...i wanna ask something, i hope you'll reply to this....how often should i replace the strings?....cause i replace mine, i think every 5 or 6 months, cause i only change the strings when they're totally rusty ..... is it alright???
I have a guitar with a floyd that's tuned to A# standard (A♯-D♯-G♯-C♯-F-A♯) and want to tune up to drop A# (A♯-F-A♯-D♯-G-C). If keep the same strings, would have to adjust the springs in the back or adjust anything else?
I am using "Skinny Top Heavy Bottom" ernie ball strings. I put them on and tried tuning it but the floyd rose is leaning forward. I know you said you have to do something in the back, but what? Please help someone! The strings are really tight and the bridge is forward how do i fix this craziness?

Just watching this makes me anxious. I HATE changing strings on my FR's, especially when changing tunings and having to adjust the springs. I think the first time I did it, it took me a week of tinkering.

i have a quick question, iwas just wondering how to remove fret buzz on the first 5 frets on a guitar that has a fr. any help would be appreciated, i have tried everything.
mathyszka 8 months ago
@mathyszka Try raising the action of the strings at the bridge saddles, that normally works on most guitars to raise the string height so you can get minimum fret buzz. You could also try filing down the first five frets to reduce contact with the strings... unless you've tried that already

man i broke a string and i havent used a floyd rose till now and i realised could reuse it because it only broke near the little block thing so i just clipped it and stuck it back in its a bitch to do though haha

If changing to a new gauge of strings you must:
Reset the tromolo springs
And reset the bridge inotion.

I know a floyd rose seams like a pain to tune but can you change tunings fast and easy, like from standard to drop c and then to Eb standard and to drop B. i like changing tunings alot and frequently

Hi Andrew
Thanks for the great and clear tutorial :)
If I was worried about slight neck warping etc, could I replace each string one by one instead of taking them all of and then putting them all back on?
Thanks
MusicKid1471 8 months ago

BanyanTrees1 9 months ago
Hey Andrew, need a tip. If say, when stringing the Floyd Rose and the bridge doesn't end up level to the top of the body, is there any alternative way to adjust aside from adjusting the spring claw? Noticed now that the heads to my two spring claw screws are both stripped practically to circles and thus nonadjustable. In which case, I should get replacements, but then how would I get the old ones out to begin with?
MJimiD 9 months ago
@MJimiD,
You should be able to get them out with a high-quality screw extractor bit. Go to a good wood-working shop - they'll sell you a high-quality one, (or you could try at Home Depot too).
Thanks for Watching,
Andrew Wasson

@MJimiD Provided you can get the old ones out you can easily repair it with some heli-coils or something.

MJimiD 9 months ago

It won't shift off the studs.

bluehappyscrap 11 months ago
very helpful, but how do you adjust the springs to bring the bridge level?
bluehappyscrap 11 months ago
@bluehappyscrap It should tension back up on it's own. You can flip a spoon handle around and put it under the bridge to level it (on the corner between the body and bridge), Then tune it. It will help it it come up to tension sooner. The tension should be equal between the springs and strings to float the bridge. Also I run my strings backwards, ball end through the tuners. Saves a ton of pain.

curious why you start with the fine-tuners half-way? I usually start mine almost all the way out because it seems like they always go flat and need to be sharpened-up.
ToomBurger 11 months ago
8:13 True..

PositivelyInsane 1 year ago
@tabotabojayar , usually people change strings once a month. More or less depends on how frequent they play, and what strings they use.
There are some 'long-life' strings available too, these strings can stay sounds-good for a couple months. The examples are Elixir strings and D'Addario EXP.
