Swear words are only taboo because on your conditioning. There's no need to swear and they are just words to fill the gaps. Fundamentally all words are man made evil.
"Eloquent profanity rolls right off my tongue" - Lowell George
"In life, you have to do a lot of things you don’t fuckin’ want to do. Many times, that’s what the fuck life is, one vile fucking task after another." - Al Swearengen
I would say excessive swearing is a sign of a poor vocabulary. Using "fuck" as every other word in a sentence defeats the purpose of swearing. A master of profane language knows the proper time and place for it. :-P
I think swear words are a necessary part of our language. If we all just start swearing all the time, the words will lose their meaning, and then what will we say when we're angry?
I think people can be excused for thinking that certain kinds of swearing might indicate a lack of intelligence, purely from the fact that many people who aren't very bright tend to have very colorful language.
To be honest I'm not a fan of some kinds of swearing. It can be great in comedy, but I've talked to people who feel the need to preface every sentence with fuck, fucking, fucken, that can be a little obnoxious.
I find uncreative swearing to be irritating. Continuous repetition of various forms of fuck you dull in comparison to one well crafted insult such as screw you sideways with a rusty machete.
Strongly Disagree with this video. Yes in stephen fry's personal life this may apply but don't act like it should apply to everyone. To some people it may be wonderful, but to stupid people like myself, it is a hindrance to one's vocabulary.
@mxdirector that was his fucking point you dumb heifer. He says in the middle of the goddamn video that cursing is not a bloody hindrance to vocabulary, and that the fuckers with the best vocabulary are more often than tossing not the ones with the best vocabufuckinglary
My mum loves swearing, she says it makes her feel good. I do swear but not alot as my parents don't allow me to swear in front of them which is strange considering i am 17 almost turning 18. However I am allowed to say 'twat' and 'bugger' which mum says are my free words. Infact 'twat' is my favourite word.
0:30 - 0:45 is too true. I swear all the time, as do many of my friends. Out of our little group, the ones who swear the most (myself included) are the writers, meaning we're the ones that are required to have an expansive vocabulary. And 0:57 - 1:06 : this is why I love Fry and Laurie. Love, love, love them. Want more vocabulary words? I'm enamored with them. They're engrossing, intriguing, and delectably brilliant. Ingenious in their efforts against ignorant ignoramuses and pompous pedants.
Wow! Stupidity and ignorance of that magnitude is rare to read outside of one of the myriad anti-atheist tirades festooning You Tube like flies on a turd. Dislike Stephen Fry if you wish (no-one says you have to have any taste), but please take your idiocy back to the home. Nurse will be round soon with your medication.
@conniebenny This response is exactly why I made the comment I did. When did he become impervious to criticism? Surely anyone that appears on tv so often should have their motives questioned, no matter who they are. Everyone who appears on a tv proclaiming to 'know' must be taken with a pinch of salt, other wise what chance do we have of maintaing any critical thought?
Sorry folks, but when, exactly did this guy become an authority on any thing? A man not even commited enough to be fully gay has a break down on stage in London and then comes back and becomes 'a national treasure', just because he comes across as an entertaining dinner guest. Sorry, I just don't buy it. As far as I can see, he's an educated buffon.
@BlowDeBloodyDoorsOff Well he has made a few very funny sketch shows, acted in a few good dramas, movies and sitcoms, written some damn fine books, made some interesting and enlightening documentaries, is hosting one of the most entertaining and most interesting programs on telly and can talk off the cuff for hours on a wide range of subjects without ever even approaching any kind of tediousness... That's why...
@BlowDeBloodyDoorsOff Apart from that of course he has never claimed to be an authority on anything. The show this clip is from is entitled "Guilty" and features him sharing his "guilty pleasures", which might go some way in showing that he is sharing his opinions of things he likes and nothing more. If you don't like swearing, that's fine, but you better have a thick skin, because people like you tend to be subject to quite a lot of it and rightly so.
@BlowDeBloodyDoorsOff why dont you ram it your pimhole you fusking cloth prunker no one gives a flying toss about what you say so skegg off you clothing cuck your all a load of shoat bag fuskers so prunk that up your primeministering pimhole
Cursing is an art form. Under the right context, with the right use and the right meaning, it can either be the most offensive thing to hear, or the funniest thing to hear.
In any other case, I think the most flexible word in our vocabulary, with the highest range of context, has to be the beautiful word "Fuck". However, if it's only said for fuck's sake, then it loses much of it's meaning and effectiveness as a verbal device, and can be considered a lazy approach to being funny or threatening.
When people swear to much it loses meaning. Swearing is fine, just just not every time you open your mouth. It is a case of less is more. The less you swear the more impact it has.
@Tapey01 No, no, no. It doesn't lose meaning, it simply loses defamatory power. This isn't a bad thing, there's always worse things you can say if the situation arises - sentences with a personal touch are much more likely to offend and with more power.
@Tapey01 That sounds awfully homoeopathic... I wouldn't say less is more. I would just say it has to be appropriate to the situation and the topic. E.g. someone who has to discuss American foreign policy, the Catholic Church or... homeopathy a lot, might have to swear hundreds of times a night without it ever being unwarranted or inappropriate.
@battlehamme Context is everything. I don't mind swearing but when my 8 year old starting watching Yogscast and they start dropping needless f-bombs, I get annoyed too. It's annoying because the show would be great for my Minecraft obsessed kid - lots of mod reviews and all around minecraft foolish fun. However, I'm not comfortable with her hearing all that swearing - it's like Big Bird dropping f-bombs on Sesame Street.
@lutherCymru Yes, your right, but there is a lot more Minecraft content on YouTube, other than the Yogscast. They really aren't the best people for your kid to be watching. It's quite easy to resolve the problem. Just don't let him or her watch they Yogscast, due to the fact that they release videos for a older audience, and not young children
@CaptainOvious123 I know right? how dare they insult me by giving that pillow screen time, it's not even necessary for the plot. What if children were to watch this, they would just be sitting there, enjoying the video then BAM unnecessary pillow!
@fackinspastic No, that was Hugh Laurie who nowadays plays House. It's a shame so many people don't know about his hillarious side, really. Watch some "A bit of Fry & Laurie", be entertained and educated!
@capsule56 He said, "...the people I know who swear the most tend to have the widest vocabularies." HUGE difference from saying, "If you swear a lot, you're smart." Try listening more carefully next time.
@Dawnbringerify Ohh, Yogs swore in front of a bunch of kids at Minecon and Notch got all uppity. I dont blame him though. Unproffesional. who swears in front of like 2000 watching you while on stage with kids and parents watching.
@jmac6965 Sir it was 1 kid and you don't have the yogs stand point also think if someone watches their vids don't you think they would have heard them swear before, 'you prick' one could say but not me as I may be a yognaut with in fact the balls I don't like swearing on something as silly as a reply to a misinformed person on the internet who in fact has not 1 but half an idea they are talking about. ~Stadic777

@MasterNebulous
Why should that matter to anyone? Are you really so desperate for attention?
The important person here is Fry.

if it took total biscuit to bring you here you should be ashamed of yourselves. Stephen Fry is a legend!

@SnakeJake23 Haha, I saw this when it was first on TV and about 5 times since. But I watched again because of TB.

@jmac6965 What happened?
Dawnbringerify 3 months ago
@Dawnbringerify Ohh, Yogs swore in front of a bunch of kids at Minecon and Notch got all uppity. I dont blame him though. Unproffesional. who swears in front of like 2000 watching you while on stage with kids and parents watching.
jmac6965 3 months ago
@jmac6965 Sir it was 1 kid and you don't have the yogs stand point also think if someone watches their vids don't you think they would have heard them swear before, 'you prick' one could say but not me as I may be a yognaut with in fact the balls I don't like swearing on something as silly as a reply to a misinformed person on the internet who in fact has not 1 but half an idea they are talking about. ~Stadic777
