There are quite a few cartoons with suicidal endings like this. As s kid I didn't think anything of it---because cartoons are wacky and to me it meant anything they did was impossible anyway. The only time I thought it was weird was one cartoon with a lion who had a noose ready to hang himself cause his friend had left. It was very short- the lion was like "Oh you came back!!!", and you saw him abandon the noose. But it made it kinda creepy that he was so cheery lol

It sucks that Looney Toons got taken off the air, because of racism and violence. Neither really bothered me because I'm white, but you know racism just happened, and plus I see it as a way to teach kids about how rampant racism was in cartoons during the fifties not a way to take a pot shot at minorities.
