@BuddyWillis African Greys are notoriious for plucking. They do it as a reaction to a stressful situation. It can turn into a huge problem, but luckily for us, never was.

@BuddyWillis I have a umbrella cockatoo at my house that plucked all off its feathers off its chest and torso. We took it to the vet to see what the problem was and he told us that she is addicted to the endorphins that are released when she plucks them out like a crack head. So he wants us to give the bird the same stuff the give to drug addicts that makes them quit.

@Al3SIA Yup, I teach him only 3 or 4 words of the phrase at a time. Just keep repeating it over & over til he gets it. When he has the first part, I teach the second. So here, I first taught "I kissed a girl" Once he had that, I taught him "and I liked it". Then I taught him to string the 2 together.

@Boomachucka Thanks! Mike can talk exceptionally well. He lives with me, so talks mostly in my voice, but also knows the voice of my daughter, and other friends and family. One of my friends is French and he can talk with a French accent as well as a Spanish accent from another friend.

@ImAnAdrenalineJunkie African Greys mimic sound and have an exceptional ear for tone. I am a female, so most of what he says is in a female voice. But he can also talk like 2 different guys that are here alot. He also talks with a French accent and knows some Spanish too. He quite often will have a conversation with himself in 3 or 4 different voices.

@yessicaaa1475 No...African greys mimic sound, so anything he hears he will learn. But he has never learned anything from TV or cds etc. He learned some stuff on his own, phone, microwave etc, but the more complex stuff like songs etc he learned because I would sing them over and over to him. After a couple of days he picks it up.

@mirawatchtu There is no way you can tell other than DNA testing or surgery. There are lots of old wives tales saying that females have more pink feathers, smaller heads etc & none are true. If they were Mike's clutchmate would have been a female & when I got the DNA results back, it was a male. So, just get the DNA bloodwork done (cost about 20 bucks) and be sure. Enjoy your new bird :)
