I believe the only way to do that is to be a different player. I think each of the players are always that color, Player 1 always red, Player 2 always blue, etc.
The first one kicks the crap (and it has a lot of crap) out of the second one. The new car models suck, the song at the end of the race and the music in between that wasn't ripped from the first one is weak. And the camera perspective is all screwy. They should have just remade the first one to include a second player mode and better graphics. Instant classic.

Yea, I absolutely loved the first game, after I learned the tracks at least. XD
But this game seems a lot better than the first.
