Guys, gas itself does not burn, it is the fumes that are catching on fire. When fuel gets put into the combustion chamber in your engine it is vapor. if you where to just put raw fuel into it, the car would not run(or run VERY rich). the whole reason why cars "blow up" would be that the heat from the fire hits the gas tank and causes pressure to build. When the pressure is too much the tank bursts and the sudden escape of air makes the liquid into a mist which THEN catches on fire.

Look, they don't come to your job, record what you do, then criticize it later. Number one: there is no extinguisher "on hand" on a pumper that will put out a fire that large. Number two: they had water on the fire within a minute of arriving on scene, which is pretty quick. Number three: its a car fire. The car is already totaled, its not threatening anything, they have to ensure that they are safe as well as everyone they are there to protect. Good to see those airpacks on guys.

@manoc2 There's no "air" in the tank, it's filled with gasoline vapors. Gasoline has a very narrow flammable range that it will burn in. That is why when you "flood the engine it won't start. Gas tanks also have pressure valves to let off excess pressure, there's no compressed anything. A gas tank that is exposed to fire will blow out the cap before the tank ruptures. Generally what happens is all the fuel and pressure will blow out the fill tube, looks spectacular, but it not an explosion.
