Dolenz smokes. This is not an easy song to sing or play. It was obvious on the studio track that the Monkees were assisted by some seasoned jazz musicians on drums and trumpet. But.....no one can take anything away from the brilliant singing of this song by Mickey Dolenz, Just fantastic.
Peter and Mike were "actual" musicians, along with Davy having piano skils. If I remember, Mickey was the only one who didn't have a talent until he learned to play drums (hence the issue on the show with Mike and Pete wanting to play their instruments for real). Man, I've been humming this song for 3 decades and this is the first time that I've actually seen it performed in concert.
@cyberpsych1 I remember a song from pre-Monkee days called something like "Don't Do It" with Mickey on vocals and guitar. Sorry, I don't remember the name of his band.
I was 9 or 10 and played this song over and over to learn all the words, my dad came up to my room with all of the restraint of a loving parent and told me if he ever heard that song again he would smash it to a million pieces. I must laugh now, poor guy... I was relentless. I have always loved this song
Funny, and oh so true. But John knew how to "scat" his way thru the forgotten lyrics. Story goes that he was so nervous before the Ed Sullivan Show he taped the lyrics to his guitar.
I think they should have given Mike the guitar solo but they didn't know if he was going to show up or not. He was so erratic. BTW, this is something they wrote.

Before there was MTV, the video production of Mickey doing "Goin' Down" on The Monkees TV show was light years ahead of its time.

Say what you want about The Monkees, Mickey Dolenz was always a great singer. This is a really difficult tune to pull off.

So, that's not really them playing, IN THIS CLIP? I count two guitars and a bass.
"Interments". Jesus. Not only are you illiterate, but you actually think you're funny or something. "Sad, so very very sad." Who would know better?
