Personally, I think good bass players use fast bass playing in moderation, but if you like so called "technical" metal then I guess some guy playing 64th notes for 4 minutes is exciting.

1. He's improvising it.

2. He's singing the exact line while playing.

3. He's play faster than C.Zombie, but in fingerstyle.

Things like Anesthesia (pulling teeth) by Metallica (Cliff to be exact) and Losfer word (big 'Orra) by Iron maiden has come off of a four string.
