I hope i dont get criticized for saying this but Sunshine is my favorite 3D Mario game. I just have so much memories with it, love the soundtrack, the creativity of the levels. I just love it
I don't see why so many people say "64 was better! This game was stupid because of water!" Well seriously, I thought it added something 64 didn't have. Besides Pianta Village was just f__king awesome.
@christbl58 Lets start over. Its not that I disliked this game, I felt robbed after waiting for a good Mario game on gamecube. I wanted something within the lines of the original past entries. I didn't like the island aesthetics, or the characters. Paper Mario came out and made me a happy guy. I still play Paper mario to this day haha.
man i loved the fuck out of this game, at first i thought the water thing was stupid for sacrificing the pure running and jumping of sm64 but i grew to love the unique gameplay and tropical environments
im going with darky in saying this is my least favorite 3d mario games, but it doesnt make it a bad game, this game was awesome, but the others were a little better
I had to send my Wii in for repair last year. While it was away, I thought it would be a good time to play Mario Sunshine, since I never finished it back in 2002. I forgot all about this song. It was such a lovely surprise to re-discover it on the Noki Bay level.
It will never be as good as Mario 64 but Sunshine is still a great game
It's amusing to see people call this game gimmicky but praise the Wii.
This is a superb game. It fine-tuned the physics of Mario 64, presented an original, entertaining and well-executed idea, featured amazing level design (and music, of course) and had a great world to explore, and that is far more than you can say about Galaxy, which was linearity to the extreme.
What probably turned me off to Sunshine was the 240 Blue coins. It was a decent game; had the collect-a-thon been replaced by something like...the comet missions in Galaxy 1&2, perhaps the game wouldn't be as ill remembered in the minds of gamers.
@RedtheGhost If you wanted to 100% complete the game, then yes, they were. While you say that Galaxy was far too linear, I don't think that it was that bad. Sure, most of the levels required the "Point A to Point B" style of gameplay, but that is what people remember about the Mario series.
I agree with you on all the highlights on Sunshine, and believe that every game has both its highs and lows as 64, Sunshine, and Galaxy(s) all do.
@RedtheGhost (I really don't want this to turn nasty, but rather keep it at a discussion type of conversation.) While it does limit the exploration factor, at times it can help. Sure it was fun to explore all 7-10 main worlds of Sunshine, but it left me wanting more. That was remedied by Galaxy. Ironicly, some levels didn't feel as big. Yet, those levels were still fun to play through, and I surely enjoyed them. Linearity in a Mario game needs to be there then exploration in that order.
@Zachary1869 No no, I am capable of keeping a level head in a harmless conversation. I just felt the opposite way; Galaxy left me wanting more because the levels were large and seemed so open with their space them, but there was little to actually do. And goodness, if by some possible chance you got lost, they conveniently placed Toad there to tell you which way was forward. >w>
@RedtheGhost True, at times it did feel condescending. But going back to wanting more: didn't you feel that the Corona Mountain stage was short? It was just platforms, mudboat, cloud-jumping and then you were at bowser. At least in Galaxy, they made it feel like a full fledged level getting to bowser, even though the final fight was a cakewalk. That's one of the things that I think they should've worked on more; that, or add some enemies during the road up the volcano.
@Zachary1869 Yeah, I'm not saying it was flawless. That's a good point. Also, the Sunshine boss was obviously silly, but I liked it anyway. The final fight always seems to be a cakewalk. That's just a Mario trademark, I guess. xD
@RedtheGhost Well, the one in SM64 was a bit challenging on both the thumb and timing. Even today, 10 years after I've 100% the game twice, I still have trouble launching bowser at the precise moment.
@Zachary1869 Honestly I don't remember which is which, it's been quite some time since I've played. This discussion convinced me to get another copy, but the one I got from Gamestop didn't work. =.= Not sure where I put the receipt either. Blah.
In the Mario formula, this game is just as good as the rest. I think what people want to say is that it clearly isn't as groundbreaking as most of the greats in the series are identified for. It's still a good game. It's still fun. I never got to beat it, but I never had a GameCube.
I don't remember that many tunes from this game and I have forgotten about this one. It feels very fun and peaceful. Thanks for reminding me Supra lol.
Sunshine is in fact one of my favorite Mario games. It's weird and different, but that's a lot of why I love it. I collected every last Shinesprite save for like 3.
I really don't know why people don't like this mario. was the best one to me. you give the guy some innovative items to use, and give other characters some speech and all you get is hate hate. only part i didn't like about this game was blue coins, other than that, the game is great. fav mario game.
How can something be so relaxing? Nintendo shouldn't even bother with the Vitality Sensor, they should just let us listen to this theme when we put the disc in.
@charger619c Actually I believe it says in some encyclopedias that Super Mario Sunshine is a masterpiece and both Super Mario Galaxies are criminally overrated.
@CinemaZebra I enjoy Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, but you're more than right. This game was amazing in every way. Just like Mario 64. Pure, unadulterated fun.
@CinemaZebra ... I can't really take that seriously. You seem more like a troll than anybody else I've seen saying this game is the best up to this point. You are looking for an argument.
@Blackbarticus If by best you mean gimmicky, boring, repetitive, horrible dialogue and voice acting (even by mario standards) and just not fun, then yes. i totally agree with you
Just back from NYC, all caught up, continuing to love the choices and I have to agree with your opinion of this, least fav Mario(ok, you said 3d I say in general), but still fun. Speaking of Nintendo, any fans of the company, even if it is small and overpriced, you gotta visit Nintendo World. THEY HAVE KIRBY PILLOWS!
And here's something we can all love...they play the best Nintendo system songs all day long. I'm standing there listenign to Gerudo Valley, Megaman, and actually #741 as I left!
Yes, this definitely gives off a relaxed Nintendo feel. Mario has the right idea...almost. Why the hell didn't he get Peach to bring some bodyguards? They had to know Bowser would show up.
@Diablosblizz Pretty much. It's fucking annoying when you faggots bring up them being "dead" on every video you watch. So as I said before shut the fuck up. End of discussion.
@SupraDarky Agreed. gets too boring after awhile. it's good for the first couple of levels, but after that it kinda treads on thin waters...it kinda reminds me of Spyro 2 and 3. sure it's fun at the beginning and has good music, but it just gets too boring to be interesting enough to finish...
Such an underrated game .... :(

@Zachary1869 Oh, true. Well, I think I played too much Mario Party, so the only challenge on the thumb was getting the stick to work properly.
RedtheGhost 1 year ago
@RedtheGhost I don't think I played enough! But then again, when played on the Wii with a GC controller, the thumb gets a much needed buffer.
Off topic, what was your personal "Secret of..." level? Mine had to be the 2nd one in Bianco Hills, the Dirty Lake mission.
