You know on IMDB this film was in the top 50 romances along w/ Forrest Gump. I was pretty happy to see that the list didn't include any chick flicks. I guess it depends on how realisticly the love developes in the film.

I wouldn't call Juno a "chick flick" either, not that there's anything wrong with 'em. Juno, however, in its complexity, depth, and sensitivity reminds me of The Best Years of Our Lives (1946) and The Rainmaker (1956, Kathryn Hepburn). In these films we are reminded of what love is.

Yes, Virginia, there is a Steve Rendazo. Even though there is a clang association between "cool" and "fool", the relationship ends there. Juno is looking for a man. Vanessa ended up with a boy. Steve Rendazo is a boy, and, apparently, is doomed to be forever so.

Yes. In this scene Juno no longer guards herself with a phalanx of witticisms. This is the real Juno, the kind of a girl she is. She has matured and her relationship with Bleek has grown in tandem. She no longer sees him just as someone whose shorts are especially golden, but now he (the total he) is golden, and all she could ask for.

If one one were follow that logic to its conclusion, one would suppose that a sensible woman would go for Mark Loring, since he had more lines in the film. Of course, he was engaged in a seduction of Juno, and was leaving his wife to pursue his adolescent fixations. Had the seduction proceeded to its conclusion, where would that have left Juno and her baby. Loyal? I don't think so. Caring? Hardly. When Vanessa says, "Well, aren't you the cool guy?", she is using irony. Cool not at all.

We are seeing here the result of an epiphany. Less than 24 hours earlier, Juno looks at Mark Loring as "awesome" and cool. Then with the phrase, "I'm leaving Vanessa", Juno learns that Mark is not cool, as she witnesses Mark and Vanessa's marriage disintegrate. That evening, she concludes (with some help from her father) that Paulie is "the coolest person, I've ever met". Of course, poor Steve Randazo was never cool at all. Paulie, will be the man that neither Mark, nor Steve, will ever be.

But I have no idea what the hell they were thinking when they chose to put it here.
