Since her former owner was a member of the then Confederate Air Force now the Commemortive Air Force,I don`t see why they didn`t get the plane instead of Red Bull Racing.
Beautiful pieces of AMERICAN history should never be allowed to be removed from American soil. This is a crime against the U.S. Take it back by force if necessary.
@adonnis010983: It is a T-6 - the Beechcraft Raytheon T-6 Texan II, not the North American T-6. Blame the military for recycling aircraft names. The Texan II's developed from the Pilatus PC-9. I work them every day here at Pensacola Tower.
Well.. its shiny... but the red bull logos make it look like a....... well idk lol... of all the planes in the world they chose 1 of the 3 fucking p-38s in the world??!! what the hell were they thinking
oh i don't think lefty would be too unhappy. personally, i think it looks better now than it ever did (with the exception of the logo and the "modern" instrument panel
Awesome video, WP. Music is ok with me. Glad that a corporation like Red Bull gets involved in this type of aviation. If I'm voting, they can put their name on the side...in HUGE LETTERS! Thanks for restoring this amazing plane; I know it takes MONEY. Besides, the logo comes off in an hour if the next owner so chooses. And who cares about lifting it over a fence? Looked simple to me. The only tragedy would be if the plane doesn't fly. Keep 'Em Flying!
It is amazing that these guys are smart enough to restore a plane but did not give it enough forethought on how they would get from A to B without a looking like a bunch of stooges. However, it is a very beautiful plane.
Really people. It's a beautiful airplane. Period. Who gives a crap about the music. It's called a volume control - use it if you feel the need. I couldn't afford to restore the rudders. Glad to see that someone had the foresight to restore this beauty.
You're kidding me? Wouldn't it be easier to simply take down the chain link fence? They could do it to make a delivery in my back yard, why not here? This was just a typical melodramatic publicity stunt for Red Bull. ...but I got to tell you, they re-did the P-38 in polished natural metal.....and that's the only way a P-38 should look. When I was a kid I saw the proto-type like that in an old National Geographic. That's how they look best.
What is the deal with insulting red bull for making this a flying billboard??..seriously folks! if the difference was this magnificent bird sitting in a heap of oxidizing aluminum... or a company spending 100's of thousands of dollars on her restoration..i wouldnt care if it had a tampax painted on the side! does anyone have a clue here the efforts and money to restore such a plane?,,,90% of us couldnt afford a tank of petrol for this thing! we should be honoring red bull!!
@ENCOMAN Look a little deeper. The first piece of music is innocuous and chill, which was the atmosphere while they were bringing the thing over the fence. The second song is a classic redone in a modern style - much like the airplane in the video. It also represents what's going on: this airplane was being shipped over seas and Lord knew when the States were going to see her again.
@Wickedpenguin Hey brother, I too make my abode in the fine republic of Floriduh. I want to say thanks for this video man. I dearly love the p 38 ever since I was a kid, and the Germans absolutely feared and loathed them. The Blues fly over my house several times a year at OLF Choctaw field in East Milton. After 20 years I have never taped 'em maybe this year I will go a record and post a vid of a private show. If yer interested let me know and I will get schedules and advise of flight dates.
is it a tradition for Red Bull to polish all of their airplanes? I think a lot of folks would rather see them in their original condition, although its mighty nice of them to fly those things around so we can enjoy
by no means think that this plane was SAVED from a scrap heap by the red bull people. they arent the only one in the world who cherise and restore these treasures, red bull just got there first with a check. to the keen eye its a modded p-38, is this a p-38f? or did they just retool it with the allisons?
@zempke this p-38 was owned by a Mr. Lefty Gardner of the "confederate air force" in Harlingen Texas who flew this bird and did an airshow routine for many many years. It is actually a later model P-38 re-engined with earlier allisons with the aerodynamic cowl intakes. I didn't know red bull bought it and is gonna use it as a flying billboard. It should be painted in authentic WWII markings if anything and be based in the states. An absolute tragedy if you ask me. WWII NUT
She looks great in gleaming metal. While I agree they could have left the logo for a newer megaproduction stunt plane, she looks amazing after all these years. Metal suits her.
When those very fast jap planes saw the p38 and found out it was faster than their planes and had up to 4 to 6 guns on it, those japs said "tauidda hertodit fecudodeto" which means "wholly rice puffs I am a slanty eyed about to be cooked bastard"!
I would of sawed the fence off the cement and just rebuilt after planes was over it! Why did they risk using a crane on this cherry p38 and having it damaged! Doesn't make sense!!!!
With todays materials we can rebuild this bird and private collectors would be willing to buy her and have her built. Lockheed is still a maker or planes last I looked. Why not, bring in the old and the new ok they are fast but lets keep history alive in what was and is and can be.!!! I love this bird!!
Did they change the engines? I can spot a rare air intake on top of the engines at 1:29 that the original one lacked I think... I find that gleaming mirror-like polished aluminium finish marvellous, but also a bit excessive...
Hahaha!! 6:08 "Push, grunt, grunt, push, grunt push" XDDD Some "pant, pant, snort, pant, buff, pant, snort, puff" is missing X))) Very good video indeed.
that's disappointing that Red Bull bought this warbird. At least they could have returned her to her original state instead of turning her into a flying billboard! For crying out loud, there are only about three flyable P-38's left in the world.
@243rem It looks like the first XP38, that set the cross country speed record in the late 30's flown by Ben Kelsey. Kelly Johnson could really design some planes!
Hey if red bull didn't buy it, there would only be 2 flying. I understand your sentiment but be thankful that did it either way. Its the same airplane, just with a different paint scheme.
True but its a company not a rich individual. They need something to justify the expenses. Sometimes its just putting the company logo on the side. It does catch attention but its not incredibly big that the logo takes over the aircraft. It is just a beautiful airplane with a red bull logo.
