@TheFrancoGerman --continued.. Subsequent productions try to make the pirates and Indians.. OOPS - Native Americans.. into REAL characters. That may have been valid for the book but not for the intent of this MUSICAL. So, when Mary sings "brave noble red-skins," it's okay.. and totally acceptable. Newer productions have bowed to political-correctness pressure with replacement phrases, such as "brave noble warriors." It's not necessary [nor valid] to alter a classic Broadway script.
@TheFrancoGerman I keep meaning to write back.. but never do, so here it goes - -
Peter Pan - THE BROADWAY MUSICAL, was a very loose adaptation of the novel. As explained, Neverland is a place where everyone is "at play." The Indians, the pirates, the lost boys.. they are "playing." So, the injuns are injuns as children would see and act them out. Tiger Lily was blond for a reason. She was - - errr - - PLAYING. It was never the intent of the playwriters to bash any character-groups.
I've always enjoyed both versions (55 & 60). I have never seen anything to say a bad word about the 1960 version. The 1960 Mary Martin "intro" is a show stopper. It may be the most famous intro of all-time. Thanks for the video "kinescope".
Thanks for this post! I've never seen the '55 version and I'm very curious, as people who have seen more than the '60 version tend to loathe it. Do you have any more clips?
@rodanvideo I mean, my grandma always tell me this story! But I'm still young. I just know this so i started watching the 2003 version, cartoon and this one..I saw their pics..they're old now. :)
...still no Cyril Richard from '55. (sigh) Greatly enjoy Rodanvideo's commentaries...he calls the '60 version arthritic. Can't imagine how scathing his view might be of the entire Sandy Duncan version now posted in it's entirity. Nothing against Miss Duncan, however, we love her.
Hmmm, actually I saw Sandy perform this role LIVE on Broadway & thought she [and the production] was wonderful. That's before I "studied" Mary's versions & realized how warm and charming the original must have been. Although I love the '55 version the best, I prefer a few bits of the '78 [Duncan] portrayal. As far a Hook, Cyril [& his campy characterization] can never be topped.
SO - is there a particular part of "Cyril's '55" that you would like to see?
Any sequence you wish to post that has close-ups of Cyril's face. His facial expressions are devastatingly funny. Probably a dialogue scene would be best for this. Thanks so very much!
Wish you'd upload some of Cyril Richard from this version. Were there any scenes in the '55broadcast that did NOT appear in the '60 version? Martin has terrific stories to tell about doing this show in her autobiography "My Heart Belongs".
All the TV versions were quite similar. Much dialog was cut-out [as compared to B'way]. Musical numbers were shortened. The '55 version appears to have the most warmth, the '56 version has more energy, but is a bit over-the-top, & the '60 version is suffering from arthritis & seems more geared to a young TV audience. Both '55 & '56 were performed LIVE-TV, while '60 was videotaped and edited.. & rushed to completion due to an impending TV/stage/tech strike. It suffers!
-continued comment- Also, ['60 version] Mary broke her arm, causing less-than-perfect "takes" to be used. '55 & '56 used mostly original B'way cast & ensemble.. '60 didn't.
So neat! I'd love to see more of this, especially the 'Ugg-A-Wugg' scene, because I think there was a dance section in that which was cut from the '60 version.
"I think" that the televised '55, '56, & '60 versions are all about the same. Probably, the dance section was longer ON B'WAY, but cut-down for TV. All three TV versions appeared to use the same abbreviated script, score, and choreography.
Oh my God. I Love this so much. It's so original. and so Raw. amazing. I absolutely wish I had the priviledge of seeing this on Broadway with the original cast. Sondra Lee is so talented. Fabulous.
I know about the '55, '56, & '60 TV versions!! I like the '55 production the best. Everyone is mellow and "real," not acting over the top. Also, the dancing is higher quality than the '60 version, but THAT's the one ['60] that everyone remembers, 'cause it was shown many times on TV... and it was preserved in color.
I may or may not put-up other clips soon, such as Hook's Waltz. I just don't know yet!
GREAT Footage! Thank you so MUCH!~ Jerome Robbin's staging as original as it comes. More more more! I bet you've got some other great archive footage.
I see no place is safe from the "politically correct" crowd! Sondra Lee did a fantastic job night after night in this role, in this show!
