  • simply buy any dslr camera, and you have that, dof setting.......its called portrait mode...........see nikon d3100 dslr......you can blur out forground, then focus in and blur out background.....its all lens focusing.......I have auto and manual on this camera.....

  • @torchidman

absolutely! this was posted 4 years ago and has no relevance today unless you dont want the extreme artifacts this lens produce...but I suppose you can do it in post anyway somehow...

  • well, now sure... but 4 years ago, in 2007, no chance!

  • Great idea! it's nice to see that is possible to shoot cheaper :) Thanks!

  • WOW! I WILL NOT WASTE MY TIME ON THAT CRAP...I WILL TRY AND BUY THE LETUS 35 DOF ADAPTER...THAT ONE HE'S SHOWING IS CALLED THE DEW NOT GOOD LOOKING CRAPPY PICTURE ADAPTER...SORRY IT NOT WORHT SHIT...

  • Nice !

  • 1:46 lol

  • So, it is only just taped onto your video camera? Would this adapter fit on any camera?

  • VIGNETTING IS HORRENDOUS ON THIS THOUGH

  • yes ok, what about now cleaning your kitchen please? ;)

  • @BlackBarMusic

oh, thanks for reminding me! :)

  • @BlackBarMusic

    lololoolololol

  • where did you get this awesome music?

  • That's a pretty heavy vignette :\

  • you gotta be dutch,,,i saw that bike bell

  • Why does it have to be 35mm? And does the length matter?

  • pee pee fpr your bum hole

  • Peter ... the cookie director :))

  • too much light fallof for it to even be useable

  • so dark....

  • Hey Peter! Great video and such a great idea... any chance you could write a more detailed How To?

  • the image is flipped right?

  • can this go on the Canon XL-H1a?

  • What about the Vignette???

  • isn't the video cam has zoom function to eliminate the dark vignetting on the sides?

  • could you please explain to me what the piece of plastic was for?

    but anyway,

    it looks excellent :P

    true movie look :D

    Thanks,

    Ben

  • AHHHH AWESOMEEE!!!!!

  • idk if this has already been asked, but why do you need the plastic over the extention tube? would it work without it? (oh, and how did you make/ where did you get the extention tube? i think that's where i'm getting problems...)

  • Ever seen the movie Leon...

  • U need to zoom in your camcorder so u can get rid of the black border at the edge..good work

  • Why you not just put the camcorders lens to SLR Camera viewer? The picture would not be flipped and you still could use the autofocus on 35mm lens when video is recorded.

  • @LiQuIDmEtALic

it could work but it would be very heavy (and perhaps look a little silly) to have a camera hanging on your lens.

  • @LiQuIDmEtALic 1 it would look retarded 2 it would wave the circle and lines in the middle

  • @8bennugent The circle and lines are on the focusing screen in your camera I guess. Some of focusing screens do not have circles an lines EG. EE-a and you can replace it.

  • @LiQuIDmEtALic Dude, if you're going to suggest involving a "whole" SLR into this camcorder project, might I suggest using an actual dSLR that already records video (e.g. Nikon D90) and forgo the camcorder entirely? All you'd need then is the shoulder-mount stock kit (e.g. Zacuto) to begin "filming".

  • @RingSight91 That's right but they are very expensive. I also am not sure does the Nikon D90 (or other dSLR) supports full HD resolution in video mode?

  • @LiQuIDmEtALic The D90 does have a 720p HD mode. If you make your own shoulder rig and use old Nikkor Prime lenses with a used D90 Body, the entire thing can't be so much more expensive than the alternative contraption.

  • @RingSight91 try an NEX-5. £450 price tag. Shoots 1980p and will take any SLR/DSLR lens you want with a cheap ebay adaptor without vignetting .

  • @hdcw2000bc But I don't see a whole lot of chest mounts or other "filming" accessories for the NEX-5. Something that small I'd want a stable platform. In contrast, the market for mounts for the Nikon and Canon dSLRs is more mature. So we're back to a single vendor solution for the supposed SLR rig.

  • @RingSight91 it has a standard screw thread and should mount quite happily on most of them.

  • whats the plastic sheet used for?

  • fagget

  • Nice video

  • can it adapt to whatever camera?

  • can it adapt to whatever camera?

  • can it adapt to whatever camera?

  • can it adapt to whatever camera?

  • Comment removed

  • It does work but I don't think I could deal with all the vignetting going on...

  • @sammislawa you can always zoom in and get reed of it ;)

  • @DrumsOwner1993 good to know, thanks!

  • the picture its not clear whats the point haveing that on i dont get it

  • @ALKUKES Practice

  • Why do you need the plastic? Didn't understand that part! Thanks!

  • it's like the ground glass you find in real 35mm adapters. the lens projects an image onto the plastic. i think haha. i may be wrong.

  • you're right

  • oh man thanks a million for sharing this! really nice guy!

  • grym konstruktion! synd bara att det blev svart i kanterna. går det fixa med en vanlig makrolins eller?

  • What is the song played during this video?

  • @PriTheHoneydark

artist: oskar schönning - happy jazz, please

  • i wonder why you need plastic/ground glass for focus on an adapter?

  • because that is what the image from the SLR lens is projected on, without it you would be able to see anything at all

  • Great Idea! Thanks for sharing it here.

  • lol.. looks like the cheapest too

i've never seen such poor quality

  • would this work on a sony fx7?

  • I tried it but never could get it to focus at all. Maybe my plastic was too clear, I don't know.

  • very nice video and creative idea, thanks

  • To be honest, you are briliant... why pay 30 or 40$ on a focusing screen and use a expensive lens when you can use basicaly simple plastic and a simple lens to get a poor quality but actual DOF effect. A friend used you're technique and with a phone vibrator added to the plastic he got amazing results... thanks a million ... :D

  • can i get a DOF with anything other than a 35mm adapter?

  • @TheScatManShow Sure there are a couple of things you can do. First of all you can use a telephoto lense which has a greater depth of feild. Or shoot from father away and zoom in on a subject. If you shoot from 30 ft away at a guy standing at a wall rather than 6ft the background will be out of focus puting your actor in focus and therefore creating a greater dof.

  • Himmler is making youtube videos now, huh?

  • lol

  • I know you got some thumbs down for that but you made me laugh. I gave you a thumbs up for cracking me up.

  • on a more serious note, I'm teasing, this is a smart idea, great in fact. but you do look like himmler lol.

  • What's the song please ?

  • nice kitchen

  • very well done

  • love the look! :)

    where can i get one?

  • you're the most ignorant person here. He just fucking showed you in the first half of the video. YOU MAKE IT.

  • Emm i think your the most ignorant person here.. you can buy it aswell.. there are DIY DOF s and you can buy them ! daaa..

    whos the ignorant now...

and they are much much more high quality and with achromat on it aswell the vignetting is gone.. and etc etc.

so shut the fuck up if you dont know anything.

  • OK you're asking the guy trying to teach people how to build their own; where he got his.

You're IGNORANT. You have no defense. We all know you can buy one. That's like asking a guy who builds his own robots where he bought his robot. LOLOLOLO IDIOT

  • You just asked this guy, who spent 1 minute and 39 seconds, that's HALF of the fucking video, explaining how to build a 35mm DOF adapter, and you fucking ask him where to get one.

    IGNORANT!

  • Emm i asked because he obviously knows alot more about DOF adapters if he builds one himself.. so that makes him smarter than me and maby he knows where do buy one?

you are soo i dont know whats the word even in english.

  • Correct, you mean.

How about you google where to make one. Don't you realize Google = god?

  • Yes you US people google everything..

and believe everything you are told on tv or internet..

    good for you.

  • is DOF adapter working with Sony DCR-SR37 ?

  • Comment removed

  • Cool project thanks

  • Well a vibrating one has much less grain and less vignetting.

    check mine on my channel

  • So essentially you build a Holga/Diana video camera?

  • haha pretty much.

thats what i hate about these things, i can either shell out as much as i spent on my camera, or make/buy a shit one, that is going to look horrible.

  • This sounds very good. Do you sell these or can you make a customized one on a special order?

  • wow. that 's amazing. i love how people can spend hundreds on those glass screens...and yours is plastic and works better than my pro one. good for you sir!

  • Thanks a LOT for the good advise!!!!

  • hey ...thanks a million !!! u made my day

  • WOW! You kick ass man! I got to try this today

  • hey budy , you're a genious... I need one for my canon xha1. Please help me!!! were can I buy the parts? thanks

  • tell me if you find out....i have the same camera! it's a great camera, though.

  • lol wierd so do i

  • Is the image upside down?

  • How much did it cost to make this? Where can I buy the parts?

  • I tried with 3M magic tape, and other milky difusse adhesives over a planoconvex lens and they work fine too.

  • hey man...sweet...what excactly do 35mm 's do?

  • Hey that's ingenious, would never think to use this kind of plastic instead of ground glass... nice old-style film effect too!

  • You know, he's a swede... An awesome swede!

  • Genius Mad Scientist!

  • Saludo como estas?

Yo tengo una camara gs500 panasonic.

y quiero tener el mismo sistema que tu tienes.

Que referencia son los lentes y el adaptador para lentes?

    Gracias.

  • Peter, thanks for the wonderful tutorial.

I've some fool question, sorry newbie on 35mm adaptor..haaa..

what do you have inside the Extension Tube? it's just an empty tube? how to flip the object since the object was fliped to non-standard watch line...

    Thanks

  • what is the music used in this?

  • ååååhhh! hallå kan du hjälpa mej...min pojkvän ville ha en 35mm adapter till sin canon hv20 men jag ville köpa en men jag fattar inte vart och hur...? måste man köpa en lins oxå??

  • yes. no colorcorrection whatsoever in this clip..

  • sorry i dont speak english but is the 35mm adapter which gives you that tone in the colors? it is beautiful.

  • Hi in Sverige ! please would you tell me if this also would work with a 28 mm Pentax lens with 52mm filter thread ? Glad to know the thread on the camcorder side. Guess that between the cam and macro extension should be needed a step up or step down adapter, isn't it ? Thanks.

  • I try to build some kind of DOF adapter too, but its really hard to navigate the camera then :-) I must get used to it.

  • yes. it takes a lot of practise. almost impossible to track a moving object..

  • i would like to know where did u take the extension tube, i mean the grey stuff? cheers!

  • wow the plastic was a great idea... you saved me so much money THANK YOU!

  • How far away does the focusing glass/ plastic thing need to be from the Lens.

  • You tweak until you find the right distance.

  • Thanks

  • is it possible to do this without an extension tube?

  • yes it is, but you have to have a tube that fits the camera and lens.

    p

  • are there any extension tubes with bayonets fit for zeiss lenses? or should i attach a thread to the extension tube to fit my lens?

  • If you have a Zeiss and want to keep the quality of a zeiss, I think this alternative kind of nulls out the performance of zeiss.

  • yeah

i decided to save up for a letus and use my canon EF lenses

  • I quite like the "low fi" vignetted effect created with this himemade dof adaptor - it's almost the equivalent of a "holga" video camera!

I doubt I could aford a "pro" dof adaptor like a redrock m2 but this sounds quite affordable.

  • jag tycker den här videon / tutorialen är SKITBRA! :D

  • Yeah i gotta ask, whats the music? Its brilliant. Also, isn't the image inverted once it hits the focusing plastic? Did u sort it out in post production?

  • Why is the video within a dark circle? Is that how this setup films or was that in editing or what? Sorry I am new to video techniques.

Thank you for making videos to help people like me.

  • The dark circle is caused by the DOF adapter. It's like looking through tube. When not zoomed in the field of view immediatley extends outward from the lens. It's easy to correct, though. All you need to do is use the camera's zoom and zoom in until you don't see the circle anymore then use the zoom from the lens. Hope that helps.

  • cool video what´s the name of the song ?

  • hold on.

so... all of the footage in the video was focused at a very short range. can you not change the focus with this adapter?

  • what's the cheapest camera one can get (go to walmarts site and see for example please)and do the 35mm, cine look?

    Thank you.

  • How much did it cost to make this?

  • Nothing really. I had everything I needed...

    /p

  • wow that looks quite nice and artsy.

  • how far is your semi transparent plastic from the lens.. i read somewhere that it should be 46mm from the nikon lens, but yours is in the end of the macro tube extension... please explain..

  • You have to turn the camera usidedown while filming or turn it around in postproduction (the best alternative because its difficult to find buttons and so when the camera is upside down...)

  • When I test my 35mm adapter the image appears upside down. How do i fix this??? in this video its does not. WHY???

  • When I test my 35mm adapter the image appears upside down. How do i fix this??? in this video its does not. WHY???

  • peterwiren

    Can you sell me this?

  • Huh? How can the camera look trough the plastic?

  • its transparent.

  • hello peter thanx for video.i just wanna ask that i have two proffesional mamiya still camera lens which i can seperate from camera, can i use them as you did?And one more thing can we manual focus with your setup?

  • Ha ha,great answer. Great video aswell!

  • The camera doesn't "look through" the plastic. The video camera is focused on the plastic and records the image projected on it from the 35mm lens.

  • Thanks man!! I'm doing a film school with some kids in Hong Kong and I built a DOF Adaptor for my very cheap DV cam..... I'm amazed at the results!! Thank you for ingenuity!

  • Whats the name of the song used for this?

  • great video. Can you tell me exactly what size extension tube and other adapter is needed for this set up? also, why does your video have black around the edges???? Otherwise the footage is pretty good.

  • Hejsan!

  • How much does this cheapest 35 mm cost?

  • I have that lens, it is soo soft at 2.8, looks like i breathed on it.

  • I have that same piggy bank for my kids (my Grandmother sent it to me from Denmark)... NIce set up, might try to make one myself, is there anyway to get rid of some of the vignetting?

  • the depth of field is great but the vignetting is too dark. I really want a 35mm adapter and don't have much money to spend either, but the vignette is too much

  • Zoom in with your camera's zoom control.

  • sure you can zoom in but the vignette goes all the way to the centre. Also wouldn't it enlarge the dirt and make it more visible... this one doesn't vibrate the glass.

  • Ah, yeah, after watching it a second time I realize what you're saying. It would be better if it vibrated, agreed, but that would make it cost more :(

Zooming would enlarge the dirt but it'd also blur it too (hopefully, if you zoom in enough), so that might make it less noticeable...but even then you're limited to some zoom...:(

In short we can't win. But I love this idea, great video!

  • agreed, I may end up buying a £1000 (that's $2000) 35mm adapter. One day at least, I don't have any money yet!

  • Yikes. Yeah, like everyone else my budget is limited too :)

I just bought an Canon HV20 and I'm using all my dad's old video equipment--mics, etc. I'm going to hijack his old film SLR's lenses too if I build a DOF adapter.

  • I envy the HV20's 24p film like mode. I now have access to semi-pro cameras such as Sony PD170 but they have no film-look mode.

    With enough money I'd have a HVX200 or EX1

  • you could also just clean the dirt off the lens or whatever internal components have the dust on them

  • just keep the ground glass clean, if you use a lens cap on the back of the dof adapter dust will rarely get inside. use a rocket blower to clean it before mounting on your camera.

  • Do you have to shoot upside down?

  • the picture is shown upside down in the viewer and on the tape so you have to turn it around in postproduction. Unless you are a bat..

  • Could you possibly tell the models of the lenses you use. I would really like to do this project with the exact same materials.

    Thank you.

  • Thanks so much for sharing...definitely going to try this out. :)

  • Hey, I'm not really well read on photography...video, yes, but not photography. Now, I could put this together simply enough, but I'm not sure what to buy because I'm not familiar with the lingo, so could you perhaps make a list of things I need, like word for word, so I'd be able to show my local camera guy? Thanks.

  • whats the reason for the plastic

  • money.

  • brilliant!! i will definitely give that a try

  • Where can I get one? Will it work using a Canon 3CCD camera? I'm shooting a short film this fall-

  • Can you use this for film making or photography or both? I'm shooting a short film this fall with a 3CCD camera I think this concept could give my production a film look.

  • you dont need it for photography because you get the picture the dsl-lens produces right in your camera..
