there are mandatory minimums for crack ... so crack can send you to jail for longer than an equal or smaller amount of cocaine.

and crack is cheaper, so it sends poor (more often black) addicts to jail for minor possession

Because whites are more likely to use powder cocaine and minorities are more likely to use crack, minorities are essentially getting longer sentences than whites do for using the same drug. It's one of the reasons why there are so many more minorities in federal prison than whites.
