thats how kelly respects the field, they go under the goal posts at every field they play at. the appy coaches should have shown class and controlled their team, but instead, they walked around the kelly parents and fans talking smack, cussing them, and calling them names. personally, they fired us up, and we put up 62 on em, and they still talked smack. good teams dont talk with their mouths, they talk with their pads, appy started it, and kelly finished it.
im from burton and 50-0 is normal for us bahaha appy is no longer what they ounce were kelly is okay but burton and clintwood are now the premire teams go ji burton raiders
JJ Kelly was wrong to make the line when they weren't supposed to and Appalachia players were wrong to run through it. And don't turn this into a stupid Appy is the victim bull.
@joeyndrwd: that's laughable. appalachia has around 220 students to wise's 473 and as i said, only recently has appalachia started to slip up. this means that on our team, the players have to play both ways without a break, while wise can substitute all they want, which apparently doesn't help them much, as i've already pointed out you haven't had even comparable success.
ok im sick of all tha hate against kelly, appy will never in this century see playoff action, and kelly out sizes appy like 10 to nothing, might as well step it up i dont see y appy is even in kellys district, only reason kelly put 62 on appy is bc of talent and very very hard work from an amazing coaching staff
point is that kelly was told not to do it and they did it anyway and we didnt like it so we charged them and kelly parents were just as bad as the players
@DrewBevers Point is that Appalachia's team was just as unsportsmanlike as the Kelly fans. Appy may not have started but they sure as hell were just as guilty as the ones who did.
@PooPoo2U and Powell Valley 1982, 1985, 1989, 1990, 1994, 1995, 1997, 1998. PV has everything on Appy so don't start that. I have no real issues against Appalachia. But you can't rationally defend what the players did, can you?
@taylorbrooke1122: i'm not the one who has an issue with being in the past, you're the one who's rallying against it while doing it at the same time... i think that's what they call "hypocrisy"
@yuhitskay Better get ready for consolidation. Just like all the rest of the schools. It is going to happen and it needs to happen. The county cannot afford to keep six schools open.
I think the whole thing was hilarious. I was there. I find it funny nobody mentions that both teams use the same building (The Doghouse) for the game. But in the end it doesn't matter.
Why?
CONSOLIDATION!!!
Finally. All 6 high schools are horrible. I was a student at both Kelly and PV. Spent plenty of time in Pound. Spent half a day with students from Kelly, PV, Coeburn, and Appy. All agreed that the schools were old and outdated.
@yuhitskay I have a life. It just doesn't include making up excuses for horrible displays of sportsmanship. Geeze, no wonder AHS is becoming the laughing stock of Wise County. Actually, they already are! I hate to say it but it's true. You guys are too obsessed with "BULLDAWG TRADITION!!!11ONEONEONE" to think rationally about anything.
@djtrumpet11 Well as an former Appalachia resident and player, I can tell you that the school was all these people had, which is why they cherished it so much, and its also why Appalachia had so much success in the 90s, to date they are the 3rd winningest football program in VHSL history, yeah so what they slipped towards the end, for that school to have did what it did was phenominal, I can say that looking back in since I have been gone from there since 99'.
@ScoopDaddy488 I'll tell you one interesting fact about Appalachia's tradition is that in the 90s, according to the VHSL-Reference website, out of 243 high schools in the state of VA - all sizes - they were ranked #2 and Powell Valley was ranked #1 as the all-time best. If that isn't impressive, I don't know what is. Gate City is ranked #10, which is also impressive. I sure hope that one day football in Southwest Virginia can again attain that status. Those were the best of times.
@djtrumpet11 This is what I loved about the area, maybe if J.J.Kelly had an 1/8th of history of appy, pv, or gate city you wouldnt be criticizing them. You would be glad you got to live in an area that was pretty much economically busted to shit with probably an average family income of $25,000, but thru that still put out some of the finest football teams to ever play in the state of Virginia, I grew up there, seen alot of great things, but ultimately did the right thing and moved the fuck away
i am siding with mhmitskaylee .. its appys school not kellys,.. people its called respect .. u dont have any right to change things that have always been done the same way .. appy always does the spirt line that way! & appys players had EVERY right to react that way its their school! u wouldnt like that if they did it to you kelly! so grow up
Dude, it may have been disrespectful for Kelly to set up their spirit line where it was but where they endangering Appalachia High School?
Yes it is Appalachia's school. That was a piss poor way of representing it. No wonder all of Wise County makes fun of Appy. They ask for it with stupid justifications.
wise did they put their freakin' spirit line right down the middle of the field when they knew they weren't supposed to . & appy stood up to that , the coaches also had nothing to do with it . wise is totally to blame . and that's the last i'll say of it . everyone should just drop it . (:
..well im here to say appy whooped ass...trust me i know i was in it.....and even after the game wise bitchs had to get the cops to take them haha wtf?
@PooPoo2U There was no score with that margin in the 90's (nor at any time during Appalachia's football history), but I did look back and see that Appalachia indeed won the majority of games versus Wise/Kelly (even going as far back as the 40's and 50's) and defeated them 51-6 in 1997. The score you might be thinking of was Appalachia defeating Pound 78-0 in the '91 playoffs, Middlesex 72-7 for the state title in '94, or Rye Cove 74-12 in the '97 playoffs. In the 90's, they were super tough!
It's crazy to think that the football team dictates where a team runs out. The cheerleaders set up the spirit line, not the players. The players HAD to run out wherever the spirit line was set up. Even if this was considered disrespectful, you don't handle disrespect by trying to fight a team before the game like a bunch gangbangers. You smack them in the mouth and settle it ON THE FIELD!!!
wow, i hate people blaming this on the coaches. we did this on our own. how the heck is our coach gonna stop us. one man isnt gonna stop a whole football team. jj kelly started this crap, it's our senior night and they try to form a spirit line down the middle of our field? that's what started it.
The end of the field they ran out on was closest to Appalachia's "Dawghouse," a cherished building of the high school. Traditionally, Appalachia comes down the steps, then goes near or under the goal posts before they enter the field. Opposing teams generally enter on the same side of the field, but down the sidelines rather than under the goal posts.
this is hilarious....i remember stomping appy on this very field as an indian...and we didn't shake hands after the game....the only thing embarrassing was the final score....and kelly did own the field that night! ha! go big red!
i was one of the appy players that night, and this would have never started if,wise would have stayed on there side and not have come out on appys side. im not saying its all wise's falt,im saying they never should disrespect us for no reason. appy is always the under dog in every game. im proud as hell to be a bulldog, once a dawg always a dawg!!!!
wise disrespects everyone. for no reason whatsoever they have their heads so far up their own butts they dont know which way is up so you really cant blame them for being selfcentered and stupid haha
I agree about Wise. I'm a Viking and when I was in like 6th grade in the 1999 season, Wise snapped PV's winning streak. Bunch of Wise fans threw a rake at PV's football players. Also in 1997, I may have been 9 then but the PV football team had a memorial wreath presented to them in memory of their late mascot Dennis Durham and took it too every game. Some Wise fans found it "wise" to take the wreath away and rip it apart.
No offense but you don't do idiot bologna like that. There's no excuse for that.
Would it not have been just as simple if someone in charge asked the Kelly fans to move because Appy always go through that entrance? Instead, you guys act like a bunch of immature little elementary schoolers and take things into your own hands and end up embarrassing the team.
This was not acceptable behavior on Appalachia's part and every little player involved should be ashamed.
I'm in the band at Burton and we always do the spirit line at home games. If I had seen the other team coming through our tunnel, i would be very afraid! and i feel sorry for the people that were in kelly's spirit line because they were innocent
This is an embarrassment regardless of who's fault it is which in actuallity is everyone BUT the kids involved. Emotions run high during a game and obviously players react foolishly at every level. Pro, College, HS..the simple solution to this problem is that Spirit Lines should be eliminated in games. Fans have not buisness being on the field before the game, this is how it is ran in the play-offs.
hey why does everybody hate appalchia for? we wasnt the one "trying" intimidate the other team. kelly came on the field like they owned the place...If it wasnt for appalchia there would be nutting around here,,cause coal keeps the lights on......and im smelling another appy LPD Championship win.....Miladen
hey why does everybody hate appalchia for? we wasnt the one "trying" intimidate the other team. kelly came on the field like they owned the place...If it wasnt for appalchia there would be nutting around here,,cause coal keeps the lights on......and im smelling another appy LPD Championship win.....Miladen
true, as a student at AHS it wasn't a surprise to hear about this the Monday after and to think of how players on our team were PROUD of what they'd done! while a few, Chase Morlock and Cody Boyd, stayed away from the fray, almost all of the team characterized what lies beneath the cheery exterior. conflict. kids these days think of football as gladiatorial combat instead of a game of skill, strength, and strategy. and yes, the coaches DID encourage this behavior. Jarred Rutherford
dude, as an appy player, i can promise you that the the coaches did absolutlely NOTHING to "ag on" what went down on the field. Our coaches stood behind us, but didn't encourage it.
The video was sent to the Wise Co. school board and then to the VHSL for review. My understanding is that the Appalachia coach encouraged this scuffle and will be disciplined by the VHSL. If you read the paper about the incident it is obvious by the coaches comments that he encouraged the players to respond to the spirit line and then stood and watched the melee when it began. Both coaches are at fault in some way and both schools will be disciplined because of what happened.
The spirit line could have and should have been formed from where the Wise kids were entering the field...Both coaches should be ashamed that It even happened...Regardless of the reason!!
After viewing the video I think they should have called the game, giving Appalachia a loss via forfiet, Im sorry but as a Coach Appalachias coach should have better control of his players than that, What business did they have in the spirit line? All teams do this and its pathetic that Appalachias coach allowed his players to do this, It was completely uncalled for. Not even sure why you would want to do this? Nothing about it really makes sense to me.
first off they may all do the spirit line BUT they have there own side to do that not on home side wise knew what they were doing and got what they deserved its just how they are so appalachia had every right to do what they did and i wouldve done the same damn thing that they did. so as for you not understanding are you really that stupid or just from wise?
No I am not from wise, I actually reside in appalachia myself, to me there is not room for stuff like this in sports, regardless of the reason, let the talking be done on the field, not in a pregame scuffle,
@thegooorooo Finally, someone from Appalachia has common sense.
It's appalling to see how people on here are trying to make excuses for what happened.
Wise shouldn't have put their tunnel through there. Instead of making imbeciles of themselves, Appalachia should have put Kelly through pure hell during the game. Maybe a team like Wise wouldn't have romped them 62-6.
Appy has made a living intimidating folks over the years. It backfired on them and the Bulldogs became whimpering whelps,as Kelly kicked their teeth in 62-6
yes appalachia does intimidate ppl because everywhere we go were trreated like shit! even tho kelly won the game we by far won the battle!!! so nothing was backfired.
Battle? Not sure what season you were watching, there wasnt a team in southwest VA worth watching this year as they were all bad, And as for the way they are treated, arrogance is oft responded to with disrespect. Think about that. and yes there was an issue with Appalachia causing an unnecessary disruption before the game, Again, there was no need in this, Appalachia should have just let Wise do whatever and do the talking on the field.
why should appy let wise do what ever they want on our own field? wise should have formed the spirit line on the sideline not between our goalpost. kelly went into that game with the intent to start trouble.
because two wrongs dont make a right young grasshopper, You all should have done that talking on the field and not in a show of stupidity in a pregame skirmish. That is all Im saying, to me all Appalachia's players did that night was give the program a black eye in starting this skirmish, Talking should be done on the FIELD, not during pregame.
Im talking during the game (you know the part that counts- oh of coarse you did, you just wanted to show yourself on youtube.)Again, there is no room for stuff like this in sports regardless of who or why.
@chance9000b How do you say that? Just because they done a spirit line coming in the same way that Appy does? Really I fail to see why this was an issue, If any team wants to mimic another so what? Let them and then stop a mudhole in them during the game for mimicing you, not start a fight in pregame with them.
it had nothing to do with trying to mimic us, it was them trying to disrespect us. if im not mistaken kelly was told before the game not to make their spirt line there.
@chance9000b respect must be earned, its hard to earn it with actions like starting a brawl because someone started a spirit line in the wrong spot , and still there was no excuse for these actions, whether they were told to NOT make their spirit line there. To me that is a moot point.
appy could save puppies from a buring building and people would still treat them like $hit. No matter how Appy had acted they would still be treated with disrespect just because thats the way its always been even when i played little league baseball we were disrespected, even by the adults from the other schools. So if we are gonna be disrespected no matter what we can at least get back at them.
@chance9000b Dude, quit making Appy the victim here. I'm a Viking. I respect the Dawgs as my whole family is from there but that was uncalled for. Also, it would be nice if some of the people at Appy would quit playing victim all the time.
@thegooorooo: "Talking should be done on the FIELD, not during pregame."
by your logic, appalachia was in the right. if it's such common knowledge that it should be handled ON THE FIELD, why is there a wise spirit line on appalachia's field?
How is Appalachia treated like shit? I remember during PV/Appy games as an elementary/middle school child that if they saw any car with PV stuff in it, it'd get vandalized.
Don't feed that stupid bull shit about Appy always being the victims because many teams have been treated like shit against Appy.
Spare everyone the bull shit. Your coach needs to control his athletes.

Keep dreaming about the LPD championship.
It'd be easier to like Appalachia if they would quit playing victim all the time and living in the past.
Kelly may have been in the wrong but Appy players' reactions made it worse.

true, as a student at AHS it wasn't a surprise to hear about this the Monday after and to think of how players on our team were PROUD of what they'd done! while a few, Chase Morlock and Cody Boyd, stayed away from the fray, almost all of the team characterized what lies beneath the cheery exterior. conflict. kids these days think of football as gladiatorial combat instead of a game of skill, strength, and strategy. and yes, the coaches DID encourage this behavior. dude, as an appy player, i can promise you that the the coaches did absolutlely NOTHING to "ag on" what went down on the field.

Nothing about it really makes sense to me.
thegooorooo 2 years ago
first off they may all do the spirit line BUT they have there own side to do that not on home side wise knew what they were doing and got what they deserved its just how they are so appalachia had every right to do what they did and i wouldve done the same damn thing that they did. so as for you not understanding are you really that stupid or just from wise?
mrsteasley42 2 years ago
No I am not from wise, I actually reside in appalachia myself, to me there is not room for stuff like this in sports, regardless of the reason, let the talking be done on the field, not in a pregame scuffle,
thegooorooo 2 years ago 2
there is nothing wrong with both especially when wise knew what they were doing!
mrsteasley42 2 years ago
@thegooorooo Finally, someone from Appalachia has common sense.
It's appalling to see how people on here are trying to make excuses for what happened.
Wise shouldn't have put their tunnel through there. Instead of making imbeciles of themselves, Appalachia should have put Kelly through pure hell during the game. Maybe a team like Wise wouldn't have romped them 62-6.
But seriously? Letting Kelly put 62 on you?
djtrumpet11 1 year ago
Appy has made a living intimidating folks over the years. It backfired on them and the Bulldogs became whimpering whelps,as Kelly kicked their teeth in 62-6
Tomahawk922 2 years ago 2
yes appalachia does intimidate ppl because everywhere we go were trreated like shit! even tho kelly won the game we by far won the battle!!! so nothing was backfired.
mrsteasley42 2 years ago
Battle? Not sure what season you were watching, there wasnt a team in southwest VA worth watching this year as they were all bad, And as for the way they are treated, arrogance is oft responded to with disrespect. Think about that. and yes there was an issue with Appalachia causing an unnecessary disruption before the game, Again, there was no need in this, Appalachia should have just let Wise do whatever and do the talking on the field.
thegooorooo 2 years ago
why should appy let wise do what ever they want on our own field? wise should have formed the spirit line on the sideline not between our goalpost. kelly went into that game with the intent to start trouble.
chance9000b 2 years ago
because two wrongs dont make a right young grasshopper, You all should have done that talking on the field and not in a show of stupidity in a pregame skirmish. That is all Im saying, to me all Appalachia's players did that night was give the program a black eye in starting this skirmish, Talking should be done on the FIELD, not during pregame.
thegooorooo 2 years ago
they did do this on the field, if you didn't notice pregame takes place on the field
chance9000b 2 years ago
Im talking during the game (you know the part that counts- oh of coarse you did, you just wanted to show yourself on youtube.)Again, there is no room for stuff like this in sports regardless of who or why.
thegooorooo 2 years ago
i agree there shouldn't be stuff like that going on but im just saying we (appy) aren't any more to blame then kelly is.
chance9000b 2 years ago
@chance9000b How do you say that? Just because they done a spirit line coming in the same way that Appy does? Really I fail to see why this was an issue, If any team wants to mimic another so what? Let them and then stop a mudhole in them during the game for mimicing you, not start a fight in pregame with them.
thegooorooo 2 years ago
it had nothing to do with trying to mimic us, it was them trying to disrespect us. if im not mistaken kelly was told before the game not to make their spirt line there.
chance9000b 2 years ago
@chance9000b respect must be earned, its hard to earn it with actions like starting a brawl because someone started a spirit line in the wrong spot , and still there was no excuse for these actions, whether they were told to NOT make their spirit line there. To me that is a moot point.
thegooorooo 2 years ago
appy could save puppies from a buring building and people would still treat them like $hit. No matter how Appy had acted they would still be treated with disrespect just because thats the way its always been even when i played little league baseball we were disrespected, even by the adults from the other schools. So if we are gonna be disrespected no matter what we can at least get back at them.
chance9000b 2 years ago 2
@chance9000b Dude, quit making Appy the victim here. I'm a Viking. I respect the Dawgs as my whole family is from there but that was uncalled for. Also, it would be nice if some of the people at Appy would quit playing victim all the time.
djtrumpet11 2 years ago
@thegooorooo: "Talking should be done on the FIELD, not during pregame."
by your logic, appalachia was in the right. if it's such common knowledge that it should be handled ON THE FIELD, why is there a wise spirit line on appalachia's field?
PooPoo2U 1 year ago
Kelly was also the one who was able to finish it. I hate Kelly but what was the score? 62 to 6.
djtrumpet11 2 years ago
How is Appalachia treated like shit? I remember during PV/Appy games as an elementary/middle school child that if they saw any car with PV stuff in it, it'd get vandalized.
Don't feed that stupid bull shit about Appy always being the victims because many teams have been treated like shit against Appy.
Spare everyone the bull shit. Your coach needs to control his athletes.

@Tomahawk922 well all they are is a bunch of rednecks that like to start shit with Appalachia and Norton
