How much would a Supra, back when they were still in production, cost with the 2jz? The reason I ask, is I'm pretty sure if you by a 2jz block option you will pay a premium for it.

BTW, back in the early 80's when Buick was dominating the racing scene I've been told, there stage 2 v6 with stage 2 heads was producing somewhere between 500 - 800 HP naturally aspirated. The concept behind the stage 2 blocks was so that on the track the engine could handle the HP and be durable enough so there were no catastrophic failures during the race.
I think this history is important because just imagine if Buick Motor Sports would have continued to develop the push rod stage1 and 2 v6. What would that engine be today? So since the stage 2 blocks were not optional, us Turbo Regal owners had to buy the engines from aftermarket if we wanted our Turbo Regal's to go fast and have a reliable engine.
Point being, Supra making a 1000HP+ with a stock block, 2jz, you pay for that block and if Buick would have allowed as option the stage blocks in the Turbo Regal’s, then you would in theory have a car with a stock block that handle 2500HP. I thought this was worth mentioning. As my post above points out there are a couple of full weight stock suspension Turbo Regal’s now running in the high 7’s
I personally know a guy, he is a school teacher and that is what we refer to him as, has a full weight Grand Nationals that has ran high 7 seconds. It is tough, because he has to find drivers, he owns the car but does not have the skill to drive it. What makes this car a little more interesting is that is doesn’t have Buick Stage Heads on it, it has Champion heads on it. Correct me if I’m wrong, but don’t most Supra’s with an automatic trans have to run NOS, to “spool the turbo?”
What about Turbo Regal’s, they don’t need their turbo to be spooled. Turbo Regal uses the turbo as the power adder, Supra uses turbo and NOS as a power adder. If I’m wrong about the Supra, Boost Logic for instance, using NOS then let me know. I’ve seen the white car purge the NOS before running a 7.97. Regardless if it to spool the turbo, it is still a power adder. What would the car run without the NOS.
. I’m not saying all Supras use NOS and all Turbo Regal’s don’t there is always exceptions. I have seen one Turbo Regal with NOS and it was on Youtube. It was Cobra racing a Grand National. Sorry for this long as message, I just think wanted to tell people what I learned and Buick had something special with there Turbo Regal’s. It would have been nice if they would have updated the instrument cluster on the car, it has a 70’s looking dash and in all fairness a 70’s looking body.

It is close the Regal Sport Couple that would later become the T-Type, Turbo T and Grand National. BTW, I have an article from 1981 and it compares a Toyota Celica Supra Vs the Buick Regal Sport Couple. I was a little surprised at the outcome. The Toyota came away with the better rated powertrain and the Buick got higher marks in handling. Some guy put together all the article’s and any and all information he could on the Turbo Buicks and I found this article on the DVD I bought off him.
Also, if any information I put up here is wrong please feel free to correct it. Also, I know this is completely bias for Turbo Regal’s, however, I still respect the Supra it is a bad ass ride as well. I love watching Supras run down the 1380. It’s a sweet car, you can drive it on the street and then to the track and put it race mode and run 7 and 8 down the 1320. Anybody who doesn’t respect that is just outright a hater or ignorant.

Grand Nationals can do the same things the Supra can do, they were once the fastest production car in america, during Mk3 Supra days. Don't shoot down other cars if you don't know the complete facts. The GN also beat the Porsche's of their time.

But i truly believe that if they stuffed the engine thats in the gallina/freeman grand national into a body that is as lightweight and as aerodynamic as the titan motorsports celica, I would not be surprised if it pulled off a time and a trap speed like that, if not faster.

Danas is a raw straight line monster ,seems a 7:49 --- 158.12 km/h - 2007 Corvette Z06,-- beat by an Audi 200 20v RS Quattro with a 7:40 --- 161.22 km/h at Nürburgring, go look up what an Audi 200 looks like..might be suprised and a stock 2007 vette lays down some nice numbers and cost around 60K, while a supra can be bought for 15K and have 15K in motor and match it for half the cost, and a Lotus Exige was only 40 seconds behind the Z06.

@lt185andcolby Completely incorrect. The Buick Regals have been turbo'ed since 74, but were not intercooled until 1/2 way through 1985. Which is why 86s and 87s are the only ones you want.
@lt185andcolby Actually the turbo regal came out in 78 (called the sport coupe then) Grand National came out in 81 and thru 83 was a normally asperated 4.1 V6, in 84 they got the now famous turbo 3.8 and in 86&87 they were intercooled turbos.

zehempa: BMW V8s are nothing to brag about. Mopar's most impressive car was the Dodge M4S. The internals and head was designed and produced by Cosworth. The car was made by PPG industries. It was a 2.2L 16 Valve DOHC Twin Turbo that made 440-hp to the wheels at 23PSI of boost. Shelby was with Dodge at the time and the car tested out at 198mph.
As for Japanese engines, no one can deny the 2JZGTE. It is hands down the best 6-cyl ever made. Even better than Porsche's flat-6.

In general I just love cars regardless if they are an import or domestic. From the Syclone, Typhoon, anything with an LSX V8, Buick GN, and then onto the imports. Sure, I hate fart cans, stickers, over-done rims, over-done sound systems, etc.

I've only owned 2 cars in my life: A Buick GN and a 300zx Twin Turbo (both almost 8-years ago). I am mechanically useless and both my cars broke down, so I sold them.
Of course technolgy changes things, but in the 80s turbo regals ruled. Buddy Ingersoll had a twin turbo v6 buick and running 7.3s at 190mph. Pretty impressive that he did it in 1986. His was slighty larger displacement at 262 as opposed to 231. Beating out 700ci cars.
Was the motor built strictly for the drag strip? Or was it inserted in all of the 80s Regal from production?? And how can you get a hold of that particular motor?
Unfortunately I seen the video youtube and any of the specifics, I don't know. Someone did mention that his was the only car that you could go buy from the showroom, but what do you believe. I assure you that the car wasn't street legal and there was a lot of non-stock looking parts on the engine. Don't miss my original point, this was 86 and it was impressive. The 3.8 in my GN is a 60's engine design coupled with 80s tech. If buick would've cont'd development who knows where theyd b 2day.
I can tell you this, based on the info. I have the turbo buick community, you can only run a stock block into the 9s maybe high 8's and even at that point you've probably replaced everything but the block and I believe reliability becomes an issue at the point as well. Lots of rebuilds. If you replace the stock block with the stage 2 block then that block will allow you to run reliably into the 7s and 8s. As far as streetibility, not sure at what point that is lost.

Yes your buick can match the ET's but have you taken a look at your cars suspension? How about interior? Take a look at 8-9 second Supra's, we still have full interior and the a/c blasting. The GN has a weak block,handled terrible and and brakes left something to be desired as well as build quality.

I have always loved Supra for their neverending possibilities but.... Grand Nationals can do the same things the Supra can do, they were once the fastest production car in america, during Mk3 Supra days. Don't shoot down other cars if you don't know the complete facts. The GN also beat the Porsche's of their time.
One thing for sure is that they're both 6 cylinders that whoop ass on v8's.
Supra = Better Track car (for handling)
Grand National = Better Drag Car (for the 1320)

Danas is a raw straight line monster ,seems a 7:49 --- 158.12 km/h - 2007 Corvette Z06,-- beat by an Audi 200 20v RS Quattro with a 7:40 --- 161.22 km/h at Nürburgring, go look up what an Audi 200 looks like..might be suprised and a stock 2007 vette lays down some nice numbers and cost around 60K, while a supra can be bought for 15K and have 15K in motor and match it for half the cost, and a Lotus Exige was only 40 seconds behind the Z06.

Huge difference, the Buick is a private owned and built on a single budget, the Supra is a fully sponsored car, with unlimited budget.
I know of a private owned GN that runs in the high 7s, stock suspension and street legal. Tony Gomes' owns it.

2nd, it was a privatly owned GN racing against Virtual Works fully sponsord company car. This was litterally an old man on his own single budget VS a unlimited money company car supra.
even with ALL OF THE dozens and dozens and dozens and dozens of fully sponsord supras around the world, they all are still beat by a buick. the fastest grand national in the world is, has been for years, and will continue to be faster then the supras sorry ricers :)

Theres only 1 video of that non street legal full drag car and all stripped out with roll cage GN thats barely pushing 6s (6.98). thats a turbo buick, not a GN or a GNX. secondly. there is nearly a 20 year difference in vehicles. thridly, they are both v-6's. The GNX can keep up and take on Supra's. You're right, Very impressive cars. Both are 6 cylinders. Supras are I-6 3.0 and I don't know what this buick turbo is but some told me that it could be a 3.8 litre V6 but correct me if its not. Besides, I'm not too impress with supras after seeing a DSM of Brent Rau doing 6.94 1/4 timing. They claimed that its a 4 cylinder, if its true.....pretty sick.

zehempa: BMW V8s are nothing to brag about. Mopar's most impressive car was the Dodge M4S. The internals and head was designed and produced by Cosworth. The car was made by PPG industries. It was a 2.2L 16 Valve DOHC Twin Turbo that made 440-hp to the wheels at 23PSI of boost. Shelby was with Dodge at the time and the car tested out at 198mph.
As for Japanese engines, no one can deny the 2JZGTE. It is hands down the best 6-cyl ever made. Even better than Porsche's flat-6.

In general I just love cars regardless if they are an import or domestic. From the Syclone, Typhoon, anything with an LSX V8, Buick GN, and then onto the imports. Sure, I hate fart cans, stickers, over-done rims, over-done sound systems, etc.
I remember BMWs were reliable back in the 80s and that all went down the tubes.
I've only owned 2 cars in my life: A Buick GN and a 300zx Twin Turbo (both almost 8-years ago). I am mechanically useless and both my cars broke down, so I sold them.

My 86 Grand National is fairly comfortable ride.
Of course technolgy changes things, but in the 80s turbo regals ruled. Buddy Ingersoll had a twin turbo v6 buick and running 7.3s at 190mph. Pretty impressive that he did it in 1986. His was slighty larger displacement at 262 as opposed to 231. Beating out 700ci cars.

Unfortunately I seen the video youtube and any of the specifics, I don't know. Someone did mention that his was the only car that you could go buy from the showroom, but what do you believe. I assure you that the car wasn't street legal and there was a lot of non-stock looking parts on the engine. Don't miss my original point, this was 86 and it was impressive. The 3.8 in my GN is a 60's engine design coupled with 80s tech. If buick would've cont'd development who knows where theyd b 2day.

I can tell you this, based on the info. I have the turbo buick community, you can only run a stock block into the 9s maybe high 8's and even at that point you've probably replaced everything but the block and I believe reliability becomes an issue at the point as well. Lots of rebuilds. If you replace the stock block with the stage 2 block then that block will allow you to run reliably into the 7s and 8s. As far as streetibility, not sure at what point that is lost.

Yes your buick can match the ET's but have you taken a look at your cars suspension? How about interior? Take a look at 8-9 second Supra's, we still have full interior and the a/c blasting. The GN has a weak block,handled terrible and and brakes left something to be desired as well as build quality.

Digital touch button climate control (an option no supra has but my 86GN does!). Block is bullet proof bottom end. brakes are converted over to 08 vette spec. Idiot LOL
