Why do Christians automatically believe that we know more than Jewish Rabbis about the Old Testament? Why is it seen as taboo among Christianity to look at Jewish teachings and other gospels that are not in the Bible? Why do we assume that the 66 books found in the King James version and others, are the complete story of salvation, life and of the kingdom of God? Why do we look upon other versions as heresy?
@AmericanCryer Im a missionary and part of the year I am in US so I do know what is going on there. Anyways. Antisemitism in the Church did not start yesterday but with Constantine that cut out any Jewish roots of the Church and Christianised the pagan feasts. Well, to be short the mess is there for quite a while. Now, concerning the fact you don't go to Church, the fact there are many arrogant pastors out there do not justified your lack of Christian fellowship. When I was at school many people
@teachercath used to cheat that didn't give me the right to drop school and quit my studies. Your maturity is shown on the way you handle situations. Concerning the biblical books, not all the churches preach out of this number of books, you have the Catholics that made the choice to include the books of Maccabees or Siracide... or even the Orthodox. They are obvious historical books. Now, concerning the apocryph books, they obviously are endarkened theological books. You can add them to your
@teachercath theology but that will make of you a new age guy or a mystic but from the moment you will do it you leave the chore of belief that makes of you a Christian. This is your freedom but we, Christians, are set on a clear chore of belief decided centuries ago with the Nicene Creed. This unites all the Christian together: Catholic, Protestant and Orthodox. This is on what our faith is based. Now, what we call heresy is what does not fit with this Chore of belief we all agree on.
@teachercath Last point the Jewish roots. A friend of mine Rabbi Michael L Zeitler wrote a magnificent book on that and I recommend it to you on the why behind the what of it. Concerning the Jewish roots, there are many ministries supporting Israel and declaring our Jewish roots. I am a part of one, Calvary Campground founded by the Heflin that supports it. IHOP supports Israel or you even have people like Sid Roth or XPMedia or even Jewish for Jesus that support Israel... and so on.
@teachercath Well, I do have fellowship with some people. But it just got to a point where everywhere I went I was hearing bigotry and hate. Now I can understand having hatred for a sin or act, but this is not what I was hearing, and definitely not the message Yeshua taught for all of us. It seems that many follow the teachings of Paul rather than Yeshua. I've seen mistreatment of women teachers, when Yeshua himself had Mary Magdalene as a disciple. Just my thoughts.
@AmericanCryer And God forbid I question anything regarding the Bible. As you may have seen, many of the churches in the US are very large and wealthy. It's a social club! I liken it to the Catholic church. Too much money, not enough message. And sometimes the messages are politically motivated or socially motivated, but to the wrong end. And it's very troubling to me. I find church within myself when I read the Bible or other texts I find truthful and helpful.
@AmericanCryer The goal of the Church is not to feed you but to allow you to have fellowship. That's the same with Uni. We all go there to have a lecture but at the end of the day, you're the one responsible to make your own research and teach yourself out of the infos you get from the teacher. In Church, the one teaching you is the Holy Spirit. No Church is perfect. None. We all are a bunch of wreck people that tries to follow the best we can Jesus. Yes, as leaders, we are recommanded to be
@teachercath examples for those we are teaching and pastoring but nobody is perfect. If I still follow Jesus it's just because of His Grace day in and out. Now, I do agree with you, it's ridiculous the way money is spent sometimes but you know what? It's all up to you to choose to get bitter out of these experiences or choose to love them no matter what and invest your money in the right place, in a ground you know that is Godly. In my country, our money taxes are spent ridiculously this doesn't
@teachercath allow me in no way to stop paying my taxes. I know God will judge them a day but me on my side, I don't wnat to use their sin to start sinning on my side. I want to walk in love. And choose to love no matter what.
@AmericanCryer That's a shame, isn't it? The worst is that he thinks he's funny, wise and anyways. This is a SHAME. In France, we have a proverb that says it's much better to seems ridiculous saying nothing than actually talking about a topic you don't know and confirm your ignorance proud of the crap that you will say. Actually, I think this guy never heard it. Computers, dictionary and schools are made to avoid that. I don't even go further on these 8 min of arrogance, pedantism and ignorance.
@teachercath This is the reason why I have not been to church in a long time. Rhetoric like this that Driscoll is spouting. I don't agree with it, never did. Why do we Christians bash Jews, Gods supposed chosen people, yet at the same time we hold the nation of Israel on a pedestal and at such a high standard? No one has been able to answer this question. And I don't know how it is in France, but that's how it is here.
Went to christianitytoday put in "everybody needs a rabbi" in quotes in the "search this site" box. Came up "Your search returned no results." Tried it without quotes. Various articles where they mention rabbis (such as a conversation between a rabbi and a Christian), but NO site specifically saying "everybody needs a rabbi".
Do a google search on "everybody needs a rabbi" in quotes plus christianitytoday. Only relavent result is Mars Hill church. Is Mark Driscoll a liar?
@elzoog This video was uploaded in 2007, so it is at least 4 years old, and it was an advertisement from my understanding - this implies that it probably isn't stored on the website any more, or wasn't stored on the website as an article in the first place.
I LOVE THIS TEACHING FROM PASTOR MARK. JESUS IS A PASSION PERSON, HE LAUGH, CRIED, AND WAS ANGRY. IT OK TO BE ANGRY FOR THE GOSPEL BUT ALWAYS REACT IN LOVE. GOD BLESS
A hot-tempered man stirs up dissension, but a patient man calms a quarrel (Proverbs 15:18)
A fool gives full vent to his anger, but a wise man keeps himself under control (Proverbs 29:11).
My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, for man's anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires (James 1:19-20).
@thechrisiacovetti hi, in general I totally agree with you and these scriptures.... but: look at how Jesus Himself acts in John 2,14-16. I think, anger is apropriate on obvious misbehaviour, especially concerning the teaching of the Gospel ;-) Mark at least didn't kick the rabbi out of the radio station ;-)
Mt 23:2-3 "saying: “The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat. 3 Therefore whatever they tell you to observe, that observe and do, but do not do according to their works; for they say, and do not do." But yeah those Rabbis.....
Kooler2004 & MasterOranda - I see your point about Jesus permeating the entire Bible (for Christians anyway, for Jews it would be the as-yet-unnamed Messiah), but the point I was trying to make was that since the Old Testament is the same for Jews and Christians, I don't see where Driscoll's flock would be courting damnation listening to a rabbi discussing it.
@suckfest666 somewhere in the old testament it says that many will trip over the rock who is the messiah, Jews included. Jews were grafted out so we gentiles will be grafted in, and with God's ultimate mercy the Redeemer of Zion will win back the Jews in the end.
I think this is so dumb. this man is ridiculous. "when tolerance overtakes truthfulness" "passion diminishes in passivity and people just don't care"..of course I'm paraphrasing but c'mon. I feel like people like this encourage you to not have faith in the interconnectedness of god and man. And not to have faith in the capability of humans to direct their efforts to achieving the highest good for all. NO...bot necessarily through a christian god... dehhhh..
@suckfest666 The whole old testament is the foreshadowing of the Messiah, Jesus Christ, that fullfilled EVERY prophecy including the one where His own people (Jews) would reject Him. He most certaintly is in the Bible. The whole Bible is about Christ. The first prophecy of the coming of Jesus is in Genesis chapter 3...THE FIRST BOOK OF THE BIBLE lol.
@suckfest666 Well I guess since he is an eternal being with no beginning who has existed before time throughout time and inside time you are not seeming to understand. Also the new testament is also called new covenant so until jesus died for sin ever gospel is majority about old testament times.
"Sitting there rabbi-esque"?? What an insufferable blowhard this guy is. Folks: trust people who are searching for truth. Doubt anyone who says that they know they've found it.
@drumrnva What a stupid comment! So we should trust people who are searching for what cannot be found?! What?! Should I doubt you since you seem to think you have the truth about Driscoll? You're the blowhard.
@shawnmeyer1970 I don't have the truth, nor do I claim it can be found. I hope that our knowledge can be always improving; never perfect. I don't have the truth about Driscoll, but HE'S THE ONE WHO'S PREACHING. NOT ME. I'm commenting on direct quotes from this video. This man preaches an exclusive message. He dismisses the rabbi's understanding of the old testament. He says "if you don't know Jesus you don't know jack about the bible." Fundamentalist, self-limiting, dogmatic. *Yawn*
for those who disagree on the use of terms in the bible, check the definitions. Words mean what words mean, not what we want them to mean. Simple as that.
@mbld45thy7 This is where I think we disagree. We have fundamental differences on the meaning of justice and the atonement. I believe the New Testament, espcially the gospels talk of justice, mercy and reconciliation being essentially the same. This is evident in passages like Matt 23:23 and Luke 11:42. God's justice is restorative and healing rather than punitive. And so the cross wan't payment for sin, but an act of love where by mankind is released from sin and death.
@brendos444 Mankind is released from sin and death through faith in Jesus Christ. Of course this faith is always manifest in how we live our lives. Not that we work for salvation, but because we love Jesus and trust in his death and resurrection, we will lead changed lives. We will be truly born again and new creatures.
@mbld45thy7 When Christ tells us that we must forgive he is essentially telling us to let bygones be bygones with our brothers and sisters. The apostle Paul tells us that love keeps no record of wrongs. God forgives us our sins. If the cross were penal, then there is no forgiveness. If God's justice requires punishment, then there can be no forgiveness. But through the cross and resurrection sin and death are overcome. The cross gives us hope of eternal life. That was God's plan from the start.
When Jesus uses justice and mercy together in Matthew 23:23, here is John Gill's commentary: "Judgment" may mean the administration of justice in courts of judicature; the putting in execution good judgments, righteous laws and statutes; protecting and relieving the injured and oppressed, and doing that which is right and equitable between man and man
Strong's concordance gives a number of meanings for the word "judgment" or "justice" (transliterated krisis from the Greek) found in Matthew 23:23. Of course the meaning depends on the context. Clearly here, justice means the restorative justice or "right" as per the 5th definition given by Strongs.
See also the paralell text in Luke 11:42: But woe to you Pharisees! For you tithe mint and rue and every herb, and neglect justice and the love of God. Here justice and the love of God are put together. This is the account by Luke of the same episode found in Matt 23:23. Justice and love are seen as one in the same here. In the greek, the same root word is used for "right" and "just".
Nothing is being swept under the rug. It is much more virtuous to forgive rather than to seek retribution. God offers his forgiveness to all. He yearns for all to accept his forgivenes. He doesn not want to destroy ppl. This is the testimony of scripture. In Greek, the word for Justice means to set right - NOT TO PUNISH! When Jesus uses justice and mercy together, he is expressing the same idea. u are getting tripped up cos u r thinking of justice in human terms - ie punishment.
No God's justice is not about punishment. As i've stated over and over, Justice and mercy go together. This is why Jesus mentions them together, they are not opposite. God's justice is not punitive! God's justice restores things to their rightful place. This is the meaning of justification in scripture. to restore that which was imbalance, to set on right paths again. This is justice. Not this idea that somehow God demands death to pay for sin.
He died in our place, but not to appease an angry God. He died so that we might live! That's what the New Testament teaches. He died and rose to conquer death so that we might have hope of eternal life. That was God's purpose. Not that he was so angry and that he needed some sort of legal transaction to make him happy again! The wages of sin is death. Christ died and rose to defeat death so that we might be ressurected as he was. This is the central part of God's plan to restore creation!
@mbld45thy7 Jesus observed the non-biblical tradition of Hanukkah or the festival of dedication John10:22-24. The bible only condemns traditions of men NOT ALL TRADITION is condemned! As Jesus' actions show. Why then do you celebrate Easter and xmas? This is tradition! The New Testament itself is a product of the Churchs' tradition. The great councils of the church determined the NT. And this was centuries after the apostles. So the church functioned for centuries without the NT.
@mbld45thy7 No penal substitutionary atonement theory started with Anselm of Canterbury many centuries after the apostles. The Orthodox position is that Christ died, not only for sins, but to conquer death and redeem the world. He died to ransom mankind from the evil one who has held us in bondage. This is a far more wholistic view of the cross. And why should we take Anselm's word for it considering he came much later than the apostles?
Why should Catholics and Protestants call the Orthodox church heretics, when it was the Orthodox church that gave us the understanding of the Trinity, the New Testament and fought agaisnt gnosticism, Arianism and other heresies?! They are, after all, Orthodox. This is a Christian tradition that is much older than protestantism. I'm not saying that they are right on everything - no one is, but they have a much more biblical soteriology and eschatology than do Catholics and Protestants.
Penal substitutionary atonement theory came much later. The theory itself turns God into a vindictive dictator devoid of any love and mercy, whose anger must be satisfied. "you do this and you say your prayers otherwise you're going to hell" are common sayings in the West. This is not how the apostles did things. But God, out of mercy and love, became incarnate and willingly gave up his life to trample down sin and death and restore creation back to what is once was because he loves us.
The orthodox stance does deny a literal place called hell. It's not avoidance. Hell for the orthodox church is not a literal place! Paradise and hell is as what you have described above. This is exactly the Eastern Orthodox view and it is biblical. Scripture never conceives of a literal place called hell. That's why it is completely absent from the OT, and that is why Jesus uses metaphors to describe the afterlife. but we know that God will recreate earth and we will live here...
@mbld45thy7 Perhap you should study Eatern Orthodoxy because they absolutely reject eternal hell fire and penal substitutionary atonement. These are the basic distinctives of their ancient doctrine. Rev 21 gives us a picture of God recreating the earth to dwell here with us. we don't go off to some heavenly realm in the age to come. At the end of time God will recreate earth for us...
@mbld45thy7 No proof texting is taking a whole bunch of metaphors about hell and then claiming it is an eteranl fire pit prepared for the wicked, when scripture teaches no such thing in context. Go back and reread the whole of 1 John. There is no reference anywhere in the epistle to hell. You have simply read this idea into the text because of your own preconceived ideas. I have answered your question. The premise of your question is wrong. That is my position. you simply refuse to engage.
@mbld45thy7 Oh my, you are literalizing Revelation! Big mistake. Lake of fire, outer darkness... which one is it? Of course these are metaphors and symbols! This is how the early church understood these passages too. Again, why is the Catholic view of hell true and the Eastern Orthodox view not? Answer that question. You have avoided the whole Orthodox churchs' stance on hell this whole debate. Perhaps you could educate yourself on what the early church and the Eastern Orthodox church believe.
@mbld45thy7 I have answered your question. You have simply refused to engage. Of course when the Apostle talks about "fear" here there is no implication of an eternal hell. You have simply read this into the text with your own preconceived idea. Fear here has to do with a false view of God. A view that God is retributive and punitive. But John tells us emphatically that God is good and merciful and loving and there is nothing to fear. For love and fear cannot coexist. love cannot stem from fear
where do the "unsaved" go? have you not read that in the end God will recreate earth to be our dwelling place? Read Revelation 21. We don't go to a literal place called heaven! God restores earth! Paradise is God's presence among his people. Those who love God experience his presence as paradise. Those who hate God experience his presence as hell. Again, this is the Eastern Orthodox understanding. Heaven and hell are the same place. It is up to us on how we respond to God's grace
@mbld45thy7 If fear of hell leads you to love God then this text makes no sense. It's the exact opposite of what John is saying here. John is saying that fear cannot coexist with perfect love. how can one be afraid of God and love him at the same time? the two are mutually exclusive. There is a judgment day. Those who have rejected God have brought hell upon themselves. Even now they experience hell in their own hearts. Hell is not a literal place, it is a condition of your conscience.
How can hell be a literal place when Jesus uses several metaphors to describe it? some of which are contradictory when taken literally. For e.g. how is "outer darkness" consistent with eternal hell fire? You are erroneously literalizing Jesus' words. Did you know the word translated "hell" is sometimes "Gehenna" in the Greek? Gehenna was a literal place where trash was burnt up in Jesus' time. You literalists must then believe that all the wicked are going to a rubbish dump! This is the folly
@brendos444 But of course, Gehenna is erroneously translated as "hell". In other places Jesus uses the word "Hades". In another place he calls it "outer darkness". None of these descriptions are consistent with each other when taken literally! This is the folly of proof texting.
I explained that the scriptures show God's justice as restorative, not retributive. Human justice is retributive. Unfortunately this is the idea that Augustine of Hippo imposed on God. It was not taught by the apostles and it is not taught by Eastern Orthodox Christianity, which predates the Reformation by centuries. At the cross, Jesus defeated sin and death. We have victory through Christ. I'm no universalist. But saying there is a literal place called hell is just over-literalizing scripture
No God's justice is restorative. That is why Jesus tells us that we must forgive others, not punish and get revenge from others. This is what God is like. Where have I denied that Jesus dealt with our sin on the cross? And when someone says "to hell with God" that person has already created hell in his heart. He is buring with hate. This is hell. This how the Orthodox Church has always conceived hell. Not as a literal fire pit beneath the surface of the earth. This view of hell is not biblical
@mbld45thy7 Sin is a big deal! I never said it wasn't! But God's justice is not like your justice. God has mercy on sinners. Isn't that the whole point of the gospel? But those of us who accept his gospel by faith must love one another as Jesus commanded. Perfect love is holiness. Perfect love is to be like God. Love and holiness are not two different things. You seem to think that holiness means to punish those who violate one of God's fetishes. No! Holiness is love! Because God is love!
@brendos444 Sin is a big deal. That's precisely why I emphasize love. Because in love there is no sin!!!!!! read Romans 13:8-10. Love does no harm to your neighbor. Love can not live with sin!!!! That is why emphasizing God's love and striving to love others more IS HOLINESS!!!!! It's a pity you hyper-Calvinists can't see this!!! Love and Holiness are not opposites!!! God does not have a split personality! God is love. There is no sin in love. Love IS holiness!!!
And Jesus' statements on hell are metaphorical as the early church understood. Also the Eastern Orthodox church understands this. They reject the Catholic/Protestant doctrine of hell. It contradicts God's character. It contradicts God's justice, which is not a penal justice, but a restorative justice. Holiness does not consist of roasting people in an eternal bbq. What type of monster wud do this?!! Holiness is perfect unselfish agape love and nothing else.
@mbld45thy7 There's no contradiction between love and holiness because love and holiness are synonymous. Perfect holiness consists of perfect unselfish love and nothing else. That's why the command "be ye perfect" is stated in the context of loving your enemy. Fear can never lead one to love another. Would you love someone based on fear? Can love ever exist when there is fear? Of course it can't! that is the whole point of 1 John 4:18. As for sin: where there is love, there is NO sin!
@brendos444 We are attracted to God because he loved us enough to send his Son to die for us. And not only as atonement for sin, but to conquer death and give us hope of eternal life. We love God because he loved us first. Not because we fear him!!! where is this notion in scripture? The passages on hell you give me are not only metaphorical but descriptive of what happens to those who don't do God's will. And God's will is synonymous with loving others.
I love this guy! He's so bold and makes no apologies for it. This is what the Christian community needs, more boldness. Those who don't shy away from any topic and aren't afraid to tell the truth.
@mbld45thy7 No, i would contend that god is love. Any doctrine that contradicts this principle should be held in suspicion. So the bible verses you quote here are merely metaphors and similes. They are not to be taken literally. Especially the Revelation, which is highly symbolic. Jesus is describing what is it like for those that reject God's grace. You're missing the point tho. One cannot trust and love God if he is constantly afraid. That is what the Western view of hell does...
... btw, did you know that the Eastern Orthodox view of hell is exactly how I have described. The Orthodox church is the most ancient Christian tradition, it goes right back to the apostles. They reject the Catholic/Protestant view of hell because it seriously distorts God's character. Your hell turns God's justice into man's justice of punishment and retribution. But God's justice is about restoration and mercy. NT Wright (an Episcopalian) has written extensively and convincingly about this.
@mbld45thy7 Christians have nothing to fear in judgment, if you have lived with love and mercy. Your concept of hell is not present here. Hell is real, but it isn't the literal torture chamber you are thinking of. Hell is what happens when we so "no" to God's grace and love and refuse to be transformed by his grace. There is no place where God isn't. God fills all in all. So why do you preach of hell fire as if to scare others into your religion? This is clearly unscriptural
@mbld45thy7 Hell is not present in this text. Rather those who wish to fear monger with judgement and punishment have not been perfected in love. John is saying that the gospel was given so we did not have to fear. The gospel reveals God's love for all of humanity. Jesus said that the one who believes does not come into judgment. There is no condemnation for those in Christ. Yet we get hyper Calvinists using the threat of hell to scare ppl into a religion of their making. This is not the gospel
This guy is so fundamentalist and ungracious. His type are basically the reason why so many in the world hate Christianity. Oh well, i guess they're just not elect. we don't have to love anyway, right? This guy's a joke.
@brendos444 pretty sure he said we still love you and we'll welcome you at anytime. he just doesnt want someone who doesnt believe in Christ to teach on people about the bible. you would be missing the most important part. makes total sense. you wouldnt go to a fictional writer to learn molecular biology.
@swichfootfan The Jews know the scripture. They gave us the OT. They know the language and nuances in the biblical Hebrew. Is his faith so weak that he is afraid of dialogue with a Jew on the scriptures? And it's not just his position which is worrying, it's his attitude too. This is why, it seems, fundamentalists are afraid of anything or anyone that isn't like themselves. It bears fruit in self righteousness, ignorance and arrogance.
@brendos444 but should someone who doesn't believe in Christ be teaching Christians? i will agree that ive always been a little wary of his attitude on some subjects. i think, if he is like me, he would welcome a private discussion with a Jew but doesn't want them teaching a Christian about the bible. your just going to have conflict there. now if he were to say not to talk to a Jew then that is just straight up wrong.
@swichfootfan This was probably a one off seminar. I just see no reason for his angry and paranoid response. I don't think it was well thought out and it displayed great ignorance and a lack of self controll.
@brendos444 Also, his rant about controlling his daughters was just plain scary. That kind absolute control can lead to emotional damage and possibly mental illness. I pity any girl who is raised in a fundamentalist setting. Be it Christian or Islam or anything else. That guy's rant exposed him for the hot-headed bigot that he is. I fear for anyone in his church. They are getting a distorted view of God. A dictator God with no love and mercy only anger and retribution. How sad.
This is literally the most disgusting thing I've ever seen..........He first acknowledges that his daughter isn't her own person as if its OKAY for him to decide who SHE marries. These people are beyond horrible. Equating people as being nutty just because they don't believe that a specific person rose from the grave......It's no surprise they hate gays and preach that women should submit to men. People actually respect this? Come on.
@RiptosRage Loving? Do you know what loving means? Do you know what loving someone means? DO you even love someone? Because if you did, the last thing You would want is for them to go to hell, you'd much favour that over a respecting of thier opinions.
@desasterz No loving someone means what Jesus said it means. Loving you enemy, laying down your life, being a Good Samaritan. loving someone means not wanting them to go to hell? Really? So you try and scare ppl into loving God? Perhaps you shud read 1 john 4 where it says that there is no fear in love, perfect love drives out fear. what then of this doctrine of eternal hellfire? It just isn't taught in scripture. Just love one another as Jesus taught.
this clip reminds me of the "Merchant of Venice" where Shylock the Jewish money lender is complaining about his Christian nemisis. And the fact that his daughter was laying down with a Christian. But it's the other way round. A Christian complaining about his Jewish nemisis...Maybe Mark wants his "Pound of Flesh"...
@RiptosRage Will you shut up about an open mind! Will you just make an effort and look for the truth!!!? How can you say Christianity cannot be proven beyond reasonable doubt when the old testament cleeearly points to Jesus. When Jesus cleeeearly rose from death, just read 1 Corrintians ch 15 And also, read Gallatians, it sias "even if an angel comes down from heaven but teaches a false gospel, don't believe him because he's cursed." NOw don't respect the frauds! Don't! It's stupid!
@desasterz Do you realize that you can't use the same book to prove something that is in that book? WE DONT BELIEVE IN A MAGICAL FIREY LAND OF SUFFERING. And "because it's written down" ISNT PROOF. How do you not understand that? Why would any random person whose never heard of hell read it in a book and go YEAH THATS THE TRUTH. You have been brainwashed since you were young. Please take your lunacy somewhere else.
@RiptosRage Christianity rests on the claims of Jesus. Having doubt regarding Christianity, yet believing in Jesus are opposing concepts. Either we believe John 14:6, Mark 16:16, Acts 4:12 or we don't. Faith & doubt are like oil & water. Learning from others? - of course. Human wisdom, experience, life lessons etc. But, outside of Christ, people are spiritually blinded & in the dark John 8:12. I'd prefer my Theology to come from an enlightened position of having a living relationship with Christ
@SamWiseGingy How are you gonna make that happen? An older teenage girl did that to me last night. (I'm 19). "Christians marry muslims all the time" and I said, "then how are we gonna raise kids?!" (I was dreding the answer, "well they can chose for themselves which God to follow" and then she said "you can't force religion on children" and I said, "christianity is not a religion, stop calling it that, or at least call the rest Vanity like Ecclesiastes sais."
@RaggedM88 Yep! It is, I bet you don't even believe in God, so don't get involved! You probably get your information from school, the compromise, If you wanted to tolerate all religions, you would have to completely change christianity, it's like rewrighting a murder novel, you would have to completely change the murderours charachter!
@desasterz religious intolerance is the single most dangerous aspect of religion and in the era of nuclear weapons there is a very real danger that it will lead to the destruction of the human civilization. I am not ok with that. you wanna have your faith and your God? fine. but at least teach people to get along, instead of driving them apart like that. I for one am not looking forward to the end of the world and intend to prevent it for as long as possible.
@RiptosRage Consider that proof is not equal to persuasion. It's possible for something to be irrefutable (Romans 1:18-23), but that doesn't mean people can't still deny it--and deny it they do. But the denial is not rational.
@RiptosRage Are you aware of John 14:6? Please just read the Gospel and see how Jesus interacts with others. Everyone is a bad person. All other religions are false. The only way to heaven is through Jesus. If you think that's "us vs them" then you need to change your mind so you believe that "us vs them" is A GOOD THING.
@Towhomthismayconcern He actually says that near the middle of the video. He says "We already have one! His name is Jesus!" So, He is not an idiot. You just did not finish watching the video. God bless!
iamd3ad, of course you realize your argument falls apart, because it must be applied across the board. The reason you don't believe is because you live in a culture that is self focused and largely rejects the notion of a God. I am a former atheist, raised by academics. I am well read, well studied and well educated; I came to faith through the pursuit of reason. Please rethink the tactic of marginalizing others in an attempt to win a debate...It only makes you a bully with no argument.

I DISAGREE. FAITH = A LACK OF KNOWLEDGE. YOU BELIEVE IN JESUS BECAUSE YOU HAVE BEEN RAISED THAT WAY; YOU HAVE BEEN SOCIALIZED TO HAVE A GUILTY SPIRIT. THIS IS WRONG, I HOPE ONE DAY THAT YOU CAN REALIZE THAT. BEFORE YOU BRAINWASH YOUR KIDS, OR CHASE THEM AWAY, WHICHEVER COMES FIRST.
also you say we already know this stuff...yes WE do. Those who are not saved do not. He is warning people not to follow a false Christ! He is telling the hell bound there are evil false teachers. Not everyone that goes to church is saved and he is trying to reach them. My church is an Acts 29 in his network. They are awesome Jesus loving people-you need to stop judging your Christian family and condemning people you dont know Jesus DID NOT do THAT.
Mark is in one of the most non Christian cities in the US. His church is growing like crazy. He is leading people to Jesus. Yes he is doing it different because there you have to. Not everyone is as "perfect" as you. You are judging another Christian and THAT is sin. Jesus DID get angry and yelled in the temple. He WAS furious. Jesus is not the wuss you make Him out to be. And dont talk about self control when you say a child should smack his father-that IS SIN.
MARK I SAY THIS AGAIN. i agree with the message i got the point but you have a Problem with Anger you need to adress ANGRY preachers do not Produce good fruits they only Produce more Anger. and Lack selfcontrol we are saposed to grow in wisdom and Stature How is YELLING At church going to do that? yelling at your kids is one thing yelling in front of your kids another i yell alot i have my moments i know but I dont yell at a Church to prove a point
@libbyandtai You use caps to prove your point. Driscoll yells to prove his AND to stand up for Jesus and the truth. It's easy to sleep through sermons when the preacher isn't passionate. Mark wakes us up to the truth with yelling. Yes we should use self-control, but there is no commandment that says, "thou shalt not yell". If your child is about to run in front of traffic, I would hope you would yell to save them and wake them out of their stupidity.
MARK i say this as a Friend. YOU NEED TO REPENT OF THE WAY YOU PREACH if you have to YELL AT ANY POINT IN YOUR SERMONS TO GET A POINT ACROSS then your PREACHING IS THAT = TO A CHILD i am suprised your SEVEN YEAR OLD SON DIDN'T SMACK YOU and SAY Jesus said False Christs would Come. This man is just a False Christ why are you upset about it? why are you Teaching the Church to care about the things we don't need to worry about Why are you Yelling? Mark? Sin.!
@libbyandtai man get a sense of humor...he's making a point of how stupid political correctness is to the point of destroying the faith. and he;s just a false Christ??? You dont think Jesus would be furious??? someone leading His people away? Yeah, we SHOULD be furious! Just a false Christ? Just a FALSE CHRIST!!! If you love Jesus YOU should be yelling!
@jennysgp92 Answer me this? Love joy peace pacience kindness goodness faithfulness gentleness and????? whats that LAST Fruit? Begins with Self and ends in control Jesus knew about The Elect and the unelect JESUS rules OVER HELL! he would NOT BE FURIOUS he would be Upset yes sad YES BUT would Jesus say I YELL BECAUSE I LOVE YOU No. he wouldn't YELL he only Ever Rebuked in FULL selfcontrol so Many pasters yell thinking they know GOD they forget who GODIS LOVE
He's come a long way with not cursing. He's on fire :) You can see what a hard time he's having not screaming the whole way through. God bless him, we need more guys like him. :)
"Tolerance overtakes truthfulness." Wow, you are so nailing it in our day of super misguided tolerance and all-roads-lead-to-God type thinking. Thank you for your passion for the truth!
Tolerance overtakes truthfulness. Wow, you are so nailing it in our day of super misguided tolerance and all-roads-lead-to-God type thinking. Thank you for your passion for the truth!
he's so right btw... i see a lot of Christian stations asking to 'support' the children of Israel or some Rabi but none of them BELIEVE JESUS WAS THE SON OF GOD!
I wonder if Jesus was as discriminating in his associations as the good reverend. Very entertaining stuff. Enlightening? Has Christianity degenerated to a series of punchlines delivered by an advocate for intolerance? No wonder most Americans can't stand the thought of being "christian." Gimme my private spiritual relationship with God any day over this mindless rant.
Mark, what did the disciples call Yahoshua?... Rabbi! Mark, Jews don't believe jesus is dead. Mark, yahoshua was a Jew. Educate yourself on Jewish culture and beliefs before you start making ignorant banter behind a pulpit.
@alanfenton100 Yet Yahoshua is "King of the Jews" correct? My point is Yahoshua belongs to Jews and Jewish culture. Mark has clearly just insulted Yahoshua's beliefs and who he is.
Fleefles, What your saying implies that all those people were innocent and dont deserve to be judged! Everyone that was killed by God deserved to DIE just like you and me. BECAUSE... God is HOLY! God is love, but he is also our Judge! if Jesus never came to earth id be running scarrrreed like crazy because nothing stands between me and the total WRATH of the lord. That means he's not just "evil"(if he exists...) He is Holy and a part of that means he HATES SIN! We are saved by GRACE,....JESUS(:
That's true if buy buy into the assumption that all the people God killed were "innocent", clearly they were not....we all deserve his wrath! thats why he flooded the earth killing probably countless people! Jesus came and changed things, but the God i serve is HOLY that means he is also an impartial JUDGE. All fall short!
"It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it." Aristotle
Does putting your fingers and your ears, closing your eyes, and yelling "LALALALALALALALA CAN'T HEAR YOU!!!" make you a "good" Christian? That seems to be what you are suggesting... I am a Christian and I would LOVE to hear what a Jewish scholar has to say about the Bible & Jesus... afterall, Jesus was a JEW.
In this rant, Mark Driscoll tells us that being taught about the Bible by a Jew "really freaks him out". Christians really need to understand WHY they believe WHAT they believe. If they don't, then their faith is based purely on habit. Christians need to be challenged as well. Challenge helps individuals refine their own personal beliefs and draw closer to God. Is Mark Driscoll's faith so weak that he cannot listen to a Jewish scholar's point of view on the Bible?
@specialk818181 A good "Christian" SHOULD believe that CHRIST died for US so that we wouldn't have to spend an eternity in HELL for what WE did against HIM. A "good" "Christian SHOULD believe that JESUS CHRIST was GOD in HUMAN FORM, and it is ONLY through HIM that we are SAVED. This Jewish Scolar dosn't believe any of that. So a "good" "Chirstian" would have perfectly logical cause to be upset right from the get go. Thats just the way it is! It's not MY opinion, it's the TRUTH!
If my daughter did "hook up" with a Christian, I wouldn't have a problem with it as long as she's happy. Could you say the same about Mr. Driscoll when it comes to people he disagrees with?
How is there no respect or grace? And what's my side of the spectrum?
What, we disrespect women by welcoming them in leadership positions? Unlike Mars Hill.
@Threshingfloor814 do you really teach your daughter, that an atheist or a Christian, and what ever views they hold, are equally good, just as long as she is happy? What if she married a Christian with Mr. Driscoll's same views? And excepts those views for her own? And then raises their kids like that? Or she marries an atheist that has no tolerance for theists, and raises them like Driscoll raises he's, same means just different goals, no tolerance or acceptance?
@kvash3154 I would have my concerns, but in the end, my daughter is the one married to the guy, not me. It's her life and her decision. Sometimes, a person is a jerk (or nice) regardless of their belief or lack thereof in god. There are many Christians in my circle of friends whom I trust WAY more than some of the atheists in my Meetup group.
@hbjimbo You might want to change that to: "you're an idiot." Generally speaking, when you make disparaging remarks about someone's level of intelligence, it helps to use correct grammar. Just FYI! :)
Very "Christian" of you to! Jesus told you to love your enemies. Better rethink your approach.
Notice the social reenforcement of Christianity. The message is that I control my daughters' sexuality and only people who believe just like I do get to touch them or i'll stab them. So creepy.
What great act . . . and actor. I'm laughing and don't believe a word this guy is saying . . . it's all for show. Where is the second commandment in this act? I can see just a smidgen of the first commandment. He is like the disciples that want to call down fire from heaven and destroy the city that rejects Jesus. Jesus

AmericanCryer 4 days ago
@AmericanCryer The goal of the Church is not to feed you but to allow you to have fellowship. That's the same with Uni. We all go there to have a lecture but at the end of the day, you're the one responsible to make your own research and teach yourself out of the infos you get from the teacher. In Church, the one teaching you is the Holy Spirit. No Church is perfect. None. We all are a bunch of wreck people that tries to follow the best we can Jesus. Yes, as leaders, we are recommanded to be

A hot-tempered man stirs up dissension, but a patient man calms a quarrel (Proverbs 15:18)
A fool gives full vent to his anger, but a wise man keeps himself under control (Proverbs 29:11).
My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, for man's anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires (James 1:19-20).

Kooler2004 & MasterOranda - I see your point about Jesus permeating the entire Bible (for Christians anyway, for Jews it would be the as-yet-unnamed Messiah), but the point I was trying to make was that since the Old Testament is the same for Jews and Christians, I don't see where Driscoll's flock would be courting damnation listening to a rabbi discussing it.
suckfest666 5 months ago
@suckfest666 somewhere in the old testament it says that many will trip over the rock who is the messiah, Jews included. Jews were grafted out so we gentiles will be grafted in, and with God's ultimate mercy the Redeemer of Zion will win back the Jews in the end.

And so the cross wan't payment for sin, but an act of love where by mankind is released from sin and death.
brendos444 7 months ago
@brendos444 Mankind is released from sin and death through faith in Jesus Christ. Of course this faith is always manifest in how we live our lives. Not that we work for salvation, but because we love Jesus and trust in his death and resurrection, we will lead changed lives. We will be truly born again and new creatures.
brendos444 7 months ago
@mbld45thy7 When Christ tells us that we must forgive he is essentially telling us to let bygones be bygones with our brothers and sisters. The apostle Paul tells us that love keeps no record of wrongs. God forgives us our sins. If the cross were penal, then there is no forgiveness. If God's justice requires punishment, then there can be no forgiveness. But through the cross and resurrection sin and death are overcome. The cross gives us hope of eternal life. That was God's plan from the start.
brendos444 7 months ago
I never said "punishment" means to set right. I said justice means to set right.
brendos444 7 months ago
When Jesus uses justice and mercy together in Matthew 23:23, here is John Gill's commentary: "Judgment" may mean the administration of justice in courts of judicature; the putting in execution good judgments, righteous laws and statutes; protecting and relieving the injured and oppressed, and doing that which is right and equitable between man and man
brendos444 7 months ago
Strong's concordance gives a number of meanings for the word "judgment" or "justice" (transliterated krisis from the Greek) found in Matthew 23:23. Of course the meaning depends on the context. Clearly here, justice means the restorative justice or "right" as per the 5th definition given by Strongs.
brendos444 7 months ago
See also the paralell text in Luke 11:42: But woe to you Pharisees! For you tithe mint and rue and every herb, and neglect justice and the love of God. Here justice and the love of God are put together. This is the account by Luke of the same episode found in Matt 23:23. Justice and love are seen as one in the same here. In the greek, the same root word is used for "right" and "just".
brendos444 7 months ago
Nothing is being swept under the rug. It is much more virtuous to forgive rather than to seek retribution. God offers his forgiveness to all. He yearns for all to accept his forgivenes. He doesn not want to destroy ppl. This is the testimony of scripture. In Greek, the word for Justice means to set right - NOT TO PUNISH! When Jesus uses justice and mercy together, he is expressing the same idea. u are getting tripped up cos u r thinking of justice in human terms - ie punishment.
brendos444 7 months ago
No God's justice is not about punishment. As i've stated over and over, Justice and mercy go together. This is why Jesus mentions them together, they are not opposite. God's justice is not punitive! God's justice restores things to their rightful place. This is the meaning of justification in scripture. to restore that which was imbalance, to set on right paths again. This is justice. Not this idea that somehow God demands death to pay for sin.
brendos444 7 months ago
He died in our place, but not to appease an angry God. He died so that we might live! That's what the New Testament teaches. He died and rose to conquer death so that we might have hope of eternal life. That was God's purpose. Not that he was so angry and that he needed some sort of legal transaction to make him happy again! The wages of sin is death. Christ died and rose to defeat death so that we might be ressurected as he was. This is the central part of God's plan to restore creation!
brendos444 7 months ago
@mbld45thy7 Jesus observed the non-biblical tradition of Hanukkah or the festival of dedication John10:22-24. The bible only condemns traditions of men NOT ALL TRADITION is condemned! As Jesus' actions show. Why then do you celebrate Easter and xmas? This is tradition! The New Testament itself is a product of the Churchs' tradition. The great councils of the church determined the NT. And this was centuries after the apostles. So the church functioned for centuries without the NT.
brendos444 7 months ago
@mbld45thy7 No penal substitutionary atonement theory started with Anselm of Canterbury many centuries after the apostles. The Orthodox position is that Christ died, not only for sins, but to conquer death and redeem the world. He died to ransom mankind from the evil one who has held us in bondage. This is a far more wholistic view of the cross. And why should we take Anselm's word for it considering he came much later than the apostles?
brendos444 7 months ago
Why should Catholics and Protestants call the Orthodox church heretics, when it was the Orthodox church that gave us the understanding of the Trinity, the New Testament and fought agaisnt gnosticism, Arianism and other heresies?! They are, after all, Orthodox. This is a Christian tradition that is much older than protestantism. I'm not saying that they are right on everything - no one is, but they have a much more biblical soteriology and eschatology than do Catholics and Protestants.
brendos444 7 months ago
Penal substitutionary atonement theory came much later. The theory itself turns God into a vindictive dictator devoid of any love and mercy, whose anger must be satisfied. "you do this and you say your prayers otherwise you're going to hell" are common sayings in the West. This is not how the apostles did things. But God, out of mercy and love, became incarnate and willingly gave up his life to trample down sin and death and restore creation back to what is once was because he loves us.
brendos444 7 months ago
The orthodox stance does deny a literal place called hell. It's not avoidance. Hell for the orthodox church is not a literal place! Paradise and hell is as what you have described above. This is exactly the Eastern Orthodox view and it is biblical. Scripture never conceives of a literal place called hell. That's why it is completely absent from the OT, and that is why Jesus uses metaphors to describe the afterlife. but we know that God will recreate earth and we will live here...
brendos444 7 months ago
@mbld45thy7 Perhap you should study Eatern Orthodoxy because they absolutely reject eternal hell fire and penal substitutionary atonement. These are the basic distinctives of their ancient doctrine. Rev 21 gives us a picture of God recreating the earth to dwell here with us. we don't go off to some heavenly realm in the age to come. At the end of time God will recreate earth for us...
brendos444 7 months ago
@mbld45thy7 No proof texting is taking a whole bunch of metaphors about hell and then claiming it is an eteranl fire pit prepared for the wicked, when scripture teaches no such thing in context. Go back and reread the whole of 1 John. There is no reference anywhere in the epistle to hell. You have simply read this idea into the text because of your own preconceived ideas. I have answered your question. The premise of your question is wrong. That is my position. you simply refuse to engage.
brendos444 7 months ago
@mbld45thy7 Oh my, you are literalizing Revelation! Big mistake. Lake of fire, outer darkness... which one is it? Of course these are metaphors and symbols! This is how the early church understood these passages too. Again, why is the Catholic view of hell true and the Eastern Orthodox view not? Answer that question. You have avoided the whole Orthodox churchs' stance on hell this whole debate. Perhaps you could educate yourself on what the early church and the Eastern Orthodox church believe.
brendos444 7 months ago
@mbld45thy7 I have answered your question. You have simply refused to engage. Of course when the Apostle talks about "fear" here there is no implication of an eternal hell. You have simply read this into the text with your own preconceived idea. Fear here has to do with a false view of God. A view that God is retributive and punitive. But John tells us emphatically that God is good and merciful and loving and there is nothing to fear. For love and fear cannot coexist. love cannot stem from fear
brendos444 7 months ago
where do the "unsaved" go? have you not read that in the end God will recreate earth to be our dwelling place? Read Revelation 21. We don't go to a literal place called heaven! God restores earth! Paradise is God's presence among his people. Those who love God experience his presence as paradise. Those who hate God experience his presence as hell. Again, this is the Eastern Orthodox understanding. Heaven and hell are the same place. It is up to us on how we respond to God's grace
brendos444 7 months ago
@mbld45thy7 If fear of hell leads you to love God then this text makes no sense. It's the exact opposite of what John is saying here. John is saying that fear cannot coexist with perfect love. how can one be afraid of God and love him at the same time? the two are mutually exclusive. There is a judgment day. Those who have rejected God have brought hell upon themselves. Even now they experience hell in their own hearts. Hell is not a literal place, it is a condition of your conscience.
brendos444 7 months ago
How can hell be a literal place when Jesus uses several metaphors to describe it? some of which are contradictory when taken literally. For e.g. how is "outer darkness" consistent with eternal hell fire? You are erroneously literalizing Jesus' words. Did you know the word translated "hell" is sometimes "Gehenna" in the Greek? Gehenna was a literal place where trash was burnt up in Jesus' time. You literalists must then believe that all the wicked are going to a rubbish dump! This is the folly
brendos444 7 months ago
@brendos444 But of course, Gehenna is erroneously translated as "hell". In other places Jesus uses the word "Hades". In another place he calls it "outer darkness". None of these descriptions are consistent with each other when taken literally! This is the folly of proof texting.
brendos444 7 months ago
I explained that the scriptures show God's justice as restorative, not retributive. Human justice is retributive. Unfortunately this is the idea that Augustine of Hippo imposed on God. It was not taught by the apostles and it is not taught by Eastern Orthodox Christianity, which predates the Reformation by centuries. At the cross, Jesus defeated sin and death. We have victory through Christ. I'm no universalist. But saying there is a literal place called hell is just over-literalizing scripture
brendos444 7 months ago
No God's justice is restorative. That is why Jesus tells us that we must forgive others, not punish and get revenge from others. This is what God is like. Where have I denied that Jesus dealt with our sin on the cross? And when someone says "to hell with God" that person has already created hell in his heart. He is buring with hate. This is hell. This how the Orthodox Church has always conceived hell. Not as a literal fire pit beneath the surface of the earth. This view of hell is not biblical
brendos444 7 months ago
@mbld45thy7 Sin is a big deal! I never said it wasn't! But God's justice is not like your justice. God has mercy on sinners. Isn't that the whole point of the gospel? But those of us who accept his gospel by faith must love one another as Jesus commanded. Perfect love is holiness. Perfect love is to be like God. Love and holiness are not two different things. You seem to think that holiness means to punish those who violate one of God's fetishes. No! Holiness is love! Because God is love!
brendos444 7 months ago
@brendos444 Sin is a big deal. That's precisely why I emphasize love. Because in love there is no sin!!!!!! read Romans 13:8-10. Love does no harm to your neighbor. Love can not live with sin!!!! That is why emphasizing God's love and striving to love others more IS HOLINESS!!!!! It's a pity you hyper-Calvinists can't see this!!! Love and Holiness are not opposites!!! God does not have a split personality! God is love. There is no sin in love. Love IS holiness!!!
brendos444 7 months ago
And Jesus' statements on hell are metaphorical as the early church understood. Also the Eastern Orthodox church understands this. They reject the Catholic/Protestant doctrine of hell. It contradicts God's character. It contradicts God's justice, which is not a penal justice, but a restorative justice. Holiness does not consist of roasting people in an eternal bbq. What type of monster wud do this?!! Holiness is perfect unselfish agape love and nothing else.
brendos444 7 months ago
@mbld45thy7 There's no contradiction between love and holiness because love and holiness are synonymous. Perfect holiness consists of perfect unselfish love and nothing else. That's why the command "be ye perfect" is stated in the context of loving your enemy. Fear can never lead one to love another. Would you love someone based on fear? Can love ever exist when there is fear? Of course it can't! that is the whole point of 1 John 4:18. As for sin: where there is love, there is NO sin!
brendos444 7 months ago

Mosh4Yesh777 7 months ago
@mbld45thy7 No, i would contend that god is love. Any doctrine that contradicts this principle should be held in suspicion. So the bible verses you quote here are merely metaphors and similes. They are not to be taken literally. Especially the Revelation, which is highly symbolic. Jesus is describing what is it like for those that reject God's grace. You're missing the point tho. One cannot trust and love God if he is constantly afraid. That is what the Western view of hell does...
brendos444 7 months ago
... btw, did you know that the Eastern Orthodox view of hell is exactly how I have described. NT Wright (an Episcopalian) has written extensively and convincingly about this.
brendos444 7 months ago
@mbld45thy7 Christians have nothing to fear in judgment, if you have lived with love and mercy. Your concept of hell is not present here. Hell is real, but it isn't the literal torture chamber you are thinking of. Hell is what happens when we so "no" to God's grace and love and refuse to be transformed by his grace. There is no place where God isn't. God fills all in all. So why do you preach of hell fire as if to scare others into your religion? This is clearly unscriptural
brendos444 7 months ago
@mbld45thy7 Hell is not present in this text. Rather those who wish to fear monger with judgement and punishment have not been perfected in love. John is saying that the gospel was given so we did not have to fear. The gospel reveals God's love for all of humanity. Jesus said that the one who believes does not come into judgment. There is no condemnation for those in Christ. Yet we get hyper Calvinists using the threat of hell to scare ppl into a religion of their making. This is not the gospel
brendos444 7 months ago
This guy is so fundamentalist and ungracious. His type are basically the reason why so many in the world hate Christianity. Oh well, i guess they're just not elect. we don't have to love anyway, right? This guy's a joke.
brendos444 7 months ago
@brendos444 pretty sure he said we still love you and we'll welcome you at anytime. he just doesnt want someone who doesnt believe in Christ to teach on people about the bible. you would be missing the most important part. makes total sense. you wouldnt go to a fictional writer to learn molecular biology.
swichfootfan 7 months ago
@swichfootfan The Jews know the scripture. They gave us the OT. They know the language and nuances in the biblical Hebrew. Is his faith so weak that he is afraid of dialogue with a Jew on the scriptures? And it's not just his position which is worrying, it's his attitude too. This is why, it seems, fundamentalists are afraid of anything or anyone that isn't like themselves. It bears fruit in self righteousness, ignorance and arrogance.
brendos444 7 months ago
@brendos444 but should someone who doesn't believe in Christ be teaching Christians? i will agree that ive always been a little wary of his attitude on some subjects. i think, if he is like me, he would welcome a private discussion with a Jew but doesn't want them teaching a Christian about the bible. your just going to have conflict there. now if he were to say not to talk to a Jew then that is just straight up wrong.
swichfootfan 7 months ago
@swichfootfan This was probably a one off seminar. I just see no reason for his angry and paranoid response. I don't think it was well thought out and it displayed great ignorance and a lack of self controll.
brendos444 7 months ago

Because if you did, the last thing You would want is for them to go to hell, you'd much favour that over a respecting of thier opinions.
desasterz 8 months ago
@desasterz No loving someone means what Jesus said it means. Loving you enemy, laying down your life, being a Good Samaritan. loving someone means not wanting them to go to hell? Really? So you try and scare ppl into loving God? Perhaps you shud read 1 john 4 where it says that there is no fear in love, perfect love drives out fear. what then of this doctrine of eternal hellfire? It just isn't taught in scripture. Just love one another as Jesus taught.
brendos444 7 months ago
this clip reminds me of the "Merchant of Venice" where Shylock the Jewish money lender is complaining about his Christian nemisis. And the fact that his daughter was laying down with a Christian. But it's the other way round. A Christian complaining about his Jewish nemisis...Maybe Mark wants his "Pound of Flesh"...

How can you say Christianity cannot be proven beyond reasonable doubt when the old testament cleeearly points to Jesus.

RaggedM88 8 months ago
@RiptosRage Consider that proof is not equal to persuasion. It's possible for something to be irrefutable (Romans 1:18-23), but that doesn't mean people can't still deny it--and deny it they do. But the denial is not rational.
dougmoerhoffman 8 months ago
@RiptosRage Are you aware of John 14:6? Please just read the Gospel and see how Jesus interacts with others. Everyone is a bad person. All other religions are false. The only way to heaven is through Jesus. If you think that's "us vs them" then you need to change your mind so you believe that "us vs them" is A GOOD THING.

iamd3ad, of course you realize your argument falls apart, because it must be applied across the board. The reason you don't believe is because you live in a culture that is self focused and largely rejects the notion of a God. I am a former atheist, raised by academics. Please rethink the tactic of marginalizing others in an attempt to win a debate...It only makes you a bully with no argument.

@libbyandtai You use caps to prove your point. Driscoll yells to prove his AND to stand up for Jesus and the truth. It's easy to sleep through sermons when the preacher isn't passionate. If your child is about to run in front of traffic, I would hope you would yell to save them and wake them out of their stupidity.

BlackishBear 10 months ago
That's true if buy buy into the assumption that all the people God killed were "innocent", clearly they were not....we all deserve his wrath! thats why he flooded the earth killing probably countless people! Jesus came and changed things, but the God i serve is HOLY that means he is also an impartial JUDGE. All fall short!

Does putting your fingers and your ears, closing your eyes, and yelling "LALALALALALALALA CAN'T HEAR YOU!!!" make you a "good" Christian? That seems to be what you are suggesting... I am a Christian and I would LOVE to hear what a Jewish scholar has to say about the Bible & Jesus... afterall, Jesus was a JEW.
specialk818181 11 months ago 2
In this rant, Mark Driscoll tells us that being taught about the Bible by a Jew "really freaks him out". Christians really need to understand WHY they believe WHAT they believe. If they don't, then their faith is based purely on habit. Christians need to be challenged as well. Challenge helps individuals refine their own personal beliefs and draw closer to God. Is Mark Driscoll's faith so weak that he cannot listen to a Jewish scholar's point of view on the Bible?
specialk818181 11 months ago

Threshingfloor814 1 year ago
@Threshingfloor814 do you really teach your daughter, that an atheist or a Christian, and what ever views they hold, are equally good, just as long as she is happy? What if she married a Christian with Mr. Driscoll's same views? And excepts those views for her own? And then raises their kids like that? Or she marries an atheist that has no tolerance for theists, and raises them like Driscoll raises he's, same means just different goals, no tolerance or acceptance?
kvash3154 1 year ago
@kvash3154 I would have my concerns, but in the end, my daughter is the one married to the guy, not me. It's her life and her decision. I can see just a smidgen of the first commandment. He is like the disciples that want to call down fire from heaven and destroy the city that rejects Jesus. Jesus
