@trking8 I was wondering if you have ever heard the Jerry Garcia Band show on 5/21/76 where Keith and Donna are playing with him.. for this humble listener, one of the best Sugaree's EVER... Especially nice is Keith's counterpoint riffs with Jerry.
Yeah, I had the feeling that was something you knew at your level of playing. I like your videos because I have been playing the Jerry stuff for a while now and you and I have a slightly different approach to the methodology of soling over the changes. I really need to get some recording equipment and post some of my own playing of this stuff. I already spoke to JDarks, who also has some really good videos. Do you have ANY suggestions for video/audio gear so as not to lose much sound quality?
Nice job, but something you might want to be aware of is that Sugaree is in the key of B Mixolydian, so E Major. A lot of people don't realize that the song is NOT in C (F major) because all the literature in the forum of Dead song books have erroneously published the key as C (F Major). If you want, you can verify this. Tune your guitar to pitch and play along with any of the official Dead releases, such as Dick's Picks or Steal Your Face. DO NOT use tapes as they are often fast or slow. ;)
Just discovered you while looking for jdarks. Great tips, thanks, I especially like the tab over the video..most useful, I will have a look at your other Garcia vids, thanks again from England.
Nice stuff, but the song was written and always played in the key of 'B'

thanks - - I'm playing through a line 6 amp, set as a blackface fender.
the other vids, with my Tiger, has a tone that is much, much closer (handmade, same electronics as jerry's, etc.,).
peace out,
terry

is your tiger made with layers of wood?

Hey, thanks for the videos. What are you playing through? It sounds a lot like Jerry's tone.

since most of this is just riffs out of the C and F jam, then the chords in the key of B would just be B and E.
for all the sections of the video (most of it) showing riffs up the neck, just move it all back one fret (from C down to B).
peace out,
terry

what are the chords if played in B? i'm a bit slow....

Could you make a vid about sugaree in B? I really like your licks
purp1eh4ze 2 years ago
Just to be clear. The vid plays this in the key of F, with C being the first chord. Important to know if you're doing leads.
To transpose it to the way the Dead did it, i.e. in the key of F, all you need do is transpose it down 1/2 step.
dicktuck2 2 years ago
actually, I believe it's in the key of C in the vid. the jam is the simple I chord (C) and the IV (F).
to do it like the dead, drop it 1/2 note to a B, and E.

thanks - - yeah, I think someone else pointed that out (see above).
my main point is to get people comfortable playing it. C is easier for the novice and a more experienced player can move it up a fret.
thanks again. t

thanks and yes they did. it's a little easier to do the hammer ons, etc. in an open C down the neck.
hope this helps with the playing, bud.

Thats really cool, sounds great and I wish I could play as well as you. But, didn't the Dead play it in B rather than in C?
Not that its a big deal, sound great the way you do it.
