I can't believe I've found this! The song and appearance of the band gives it the impression this video is one to skip, however I don't think I've EVER heard Miles Davis trade fours and be imitated by ANYONE before...and seem to enjoy it! He even claps Herbie after his solo at 4.15! I don't think people realise how rare the footage in this video is.
Keytar = Cheesetar. Herbie, you should have stuck with your Rhodes/Moog/Clavinet. Oh well, I forgive you, and you are still a keyboard God. The 80s were a silly time for keyboard sounds.... Check out some of Herbie's more recent jams, he mostly sticks with a Steinway grand these days.
man this music sucks. I wish Herbie woulda continued down the path of dolphin dance. Phew, there are some haunting chords, pure genius. Miles was too cocky, I really can only dig some of his older stuff and STILL he labeled himself "The Birth of The Cool". Ridiculous. He was on a constant ego trip. it's really a shame that Clifford Brown died. He was an amazing musician and a great person, miles wouldn't have ever taken off like this. Sheesh, this music is whack.
@empw It's not bigotry, it's an opinion. The guy was a pretty good player before he moved into this territory. His licks are pure whack stupid. One of my favorite albums is him and bird playing together, just a great album, but then he goes and does this stuff and raps all on players like wynton marsalis who are trying to keep the swing alive instead this electronica BS.
@SuperYouGerT You know, I thought that you'd be fond of Wynton Marsalis before you posted this second comment. I'm relatively unbiased, so I feel qualified to tell you this. Wynton is a great player and an outstanding clinician/instructor, but he has his head up his ass in so many ways. Yeah, Miles was pretty good before he transitioned out of bebop, but then he just kept growing into an insane musical force. The guy revolutionized jazz and music as a whole. I think Wynton should open his ears.
@confoozled3737 It's hard to compare these two cats, Wynton doesn't have his head up his ass, he simply stands for the style he believes in. I have a couple of his books and have listened to him a lot, he gets this criticism from everybody, and yet his music is stylistically moving the original jazz forward. He plays the jazz. He plays swing. Miles didn't revolutionize jazz, he revolutionized funk. Funk is not jazz. Latin is not jazz. Rock is not jazz.
@confoozled3737 Miles switched genres. He is an Intelligent musician, so yes, he was successful in his transition, but to try to call it jazz proves ignorance. Just because someone improvises over changes doesn't mean it's jazz. Metallica isn't jazz, it's rock. The beat labels the music. so did miles move "jazz" forward? no, he moved funk forward, he moved "intelligent" music forward.
@SuperYouGerT Even though I don't agree with you, I appreciate the well thought-out response. I won't continue this as an argument out of respect for both of us. I think our time could be better spent with other endeavors. We'll have to agree to disagree, I guess. Thanks for giving me some intelligent insight into your perspective.
@SuperYouGerT but to say miles didnt move jazz forward is ignoring his cool jazz of the early 50's, hard-bop with coltrane and the first great quintet, and then the post-bop of the second great quintet, THEN came funk, till then it WAS jazz and he was (a part of) moving it forward
Funniest 40 seconds in jazz EVER! 2:33-3:10 Miles "riff"is hysterical, pathetically perfectly off terrible FUNNY...really wacky... notes ...timing... response the drummer is crackin up as is Herbie check it out LOL
@bananafingerrrs agreed for sure, Miles is God -- even when falling asleep; and Herbie's at least a demi-god, even when playing that cheesy synth....but do you know Ole by Coltrane, if not check it out
@ibiworld10 Cheers bro, will check it out now! Gotta love Coltrane...dammmn there are just so many big names out there than just radiate awesome vibe! God Bless musicians.

@ascreamingwalrus the thought occurred to me, after I posted, that he may have simply put a lefty neck onto a righty body. It wouldn't be that difficult to flip the nut.

why do tools like you try so hard to worship people like miles? If you met him and talked to him as if he were a god, he would tell you to shut the fuck up and treat him like a normal person. I go to concerts to hear people play, you dumb fuck.
The problem in your exclamations, is that I actually did not "worship" Miles. I just said he was very FAMOUS, which is just a fact and not an epitheton in any way.
