  • Any chance you'd make the character available for download?

  • I agree with freddicus. the voice acting in this game is excellent

  • Acrobatics is kinda fun. It's not terribly useful, but it's kinda fun anyway.

And the magic system isn't all that bad. My only gripe with it is that the spell that's supposed to protect me from wraiths never worked and I ended up having to use hide + an offensive spell to kill it (for some reason it couldn't kill me while I was hidden).

  • The game has no title background, no howl and no voice because it is a port of the floppy version rather than the CD version. The CD version added the title background (and sweeping video intro), howl and voice, as well as better-quality MIDI.

  • :/ almost worse than Dragon ball z season2:the first punch. Yes import the character! Geez man how much can you draw stuff out!?

  • Skipping the third game is completely illogical.

It is like playing the fifth game first, then the third one and the first one after that. It doesn't make sense. If you do a series, don't skip episodes.

Anyway, I finally watched the third game LP from Sierra gamer Scott, so I am here to watch the fourth one ! :-)

  • Hey man great LP. I am really enjoying it so far. I remember playing this game as a kind and the sweet nostalgia just gets the best of me. Nice job

  • I'll force your sphincter open with a dagger and pass through.

  • What, did you just say "hieno juttu" in Finnish @ 5:54?

  • Narrator is actually none other than John Rhys-Davies. The guy from lord of the rings and numerous other films such as the indiana jones films.

I know the game was a wreck and it wasn't even finished. It was shipped in a late beta version. Patched up only to allow the player a very strict way of finishing it as well. The game was the best out of them all but was so riddled with bugs in it. That it would be difficult to finish as teh game would just break so much.

  • Hercrabbiness is right. She does rock

  • I thought paladins got Magic automatically in Quest for Glory 3 as soon as they get their healing ability. At least I know I ended up with a measly 5 in that ability at some point during that game on my Fighter->Paladin.

  • ahhh my childhood again

  • Absolutely beautiful game and great music

  • lmao, "The werewolf sound's not there, it doesn't work" It's funny because it works on mine. "Well, you suck"

  • I really wish you'd change your mind about QfG3

  • @Kijikun I'd love to, but I didn't play it when I was little so I don't have the same nostalgic associations with it that other people have; I would probably just ruin it. Someone else who's an excellent LPer is planning to do it soon... :)

  • Holy crap this guy is boring

  • I cant get XP to recognize this game or QFG5 or Phantasmagoria 1 and 2.I tried the backward mode for older OS but not working.I do have a beefy quad core and vid card but still it should work shouldnt it. I was kinda leary of DOSBOX and other programs like it.Anyone got opinions on them and how they run.Arwe they easy to install? Help is appreciated.

  • @meckleboy go with dosbox

  • Hello again, LateBlt.

I've been catching up on all my subscriptions since I was stuck offline for quite a while (in alphabetical order which is why I caught up on HerCrabbiness before you despite subscribing to you a lot earlier). Anyway, I could swear that I finished watching this QfG4 series before my hiatus. But I can't find any comments I made on later videos, so I'm just going to start over instead of trying to figure out where I left off. Please excuse any redundant comments I may make.

  • Whenever I play it on dosbox, the dialog windows disappear very quickly. any ideas?

  • @muddwell You have a talkie version of the game without the actual speech files. Turn off the speech in the control panel so the timer bases itself on the length of the text instead.

  • @LateBlt cheers for the reply.

  • i can't believe you've turned the sound off. shadows of darkness had some of the best video game voice acting of all time. you do a decent job, but you're no john rhys davies.

  • It's ok dude *hic* Im ok to steal *hic*

  • I remember this game! wow, good times here, i appricate ya putting this up, nothing like a walk through memory lane

  • how do you make a character into a .sav file?, im playing on a different pc w/ w98 and am not using a disk

  • Whenever you "win" at any of the QFG games, you're asked where you want to save the file. Just specify any path and filename you wish.

  • where could i get a character as a sav file? i have quest for glory 4 and would like to be a paladin

  • i like watching the game but whats up with all of the talking.

  • They're people commenting on the game as they play it.

  • You just got yourself a subscriber. i remember playing this on my old babysitter's computer. it was one of my first adventure/rpg games.

  • god, i loved this game as a child!

  • Now im curious, Why would climbing be bad. I remember someone mentioning having thief skills as a paladin would make you miss something in QFG5 some character or something.

I didnt want that, I didnt give myself thief skills except climbing cause i didnt think climbing was a skill only thief should have.

  • I remember using a hex editor on the game save and I was able to make myself a paladin with amazingly huge stats!

  • acrobatics is a thiefs skill, he needs to use it a few times to advance through the game.......sorry if i leave any dumb comments on ur other vids, cuz im high =/

  • the thiefs get the thiefs guild. and a whole other quest chain

  • Crowley is finnish?

  • Yes.

  • Oh ok, it was just surprising hearing you say '' hieno juttu'' out of nowhere :D

  • If you use dos box ,You can change the game sound setting by use the 'install.exe' under QFG4 Directory ,

choice sound blaster instead of the others, then you can hear the 'Oh.....oh....' ... wolf crying..

and Thanks for your two for the serial of videos! It's so nice !!

  • oh i forgot i have already played the first 3 and im really exited about playing this one and thats why im asking ok :D

  • i really want to play this game but i can't get a copy. can anybody tell me how to or maybe just tell me a way to get a hold of it? please reply someone. :)

  • i'm just now trying to get caught up on a lot of your vids, very entertaining :D

  • Could you explain how to import a character? Whenever I try to import my character it never shows up in the import character window. I've changed directories and everything, but it just isn't showing up 8(

  • When you try to import a character, the game should show ALL files in that directory, not just the one containing your character; as long as you see the file there in the directory, you should just be able to select that file. If you don't see the file at all, something's wrong with how the game is accessing your file system. If you see the file but the game isn't importing the character from the file, you probably have a corrupt character file.

  • All right, thank you! I got it working (though I'm not sure what I did to make it work...). =D

  • Come on, no voice? John Rhys-Davies is an awesome narrator. Loved the voices in this game.

  • way to go, Crowley!

  • why wouldnt you like the voiceovers? or acrobatics? or climbing? especially for the fighter..are you mad? its essential for the fighter

  • Lol, remember that the things you are ripping were actually cool when it was released. Also, it took you over ten minutes to explain the character setup screen. Not cool. It's easy to knock old games in comparrison to the new stuff to make yourself sound cool. And no, your girlfriend isn't funny either. I'll keep checking out your vids but so far, I'm not impressed.

  • I agree, too many people knock old games and prefer newer games. Personally, I don't like this game because it's too new for my tastes; I think 256 colors is just a bit much. I vastly prefer the first two QFG games.

  • I have to say this and the original are my favorite QGF games. Though I have not yet gotten around to playing the last one.

  • ok soz i didn't know k so i will be adding some vids mabey, i don't no. k so sozzy BYBY LateBlt i still LOVE your vids! :) BYE

  • Hey dude... this is the like millionth time i've watched these videos. I love your vids Subscribe plz dude i love your vids there awesome dude once again... i LOVE THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! subscribe PLZ! I LOVE YOUR VIDS DUDE!!!

  • I appreciate it, thank you, but I'm afraid I don't subscribe upon request... I usually only subscribe if I like someone's videos. :)

  • You guys rule! Thank you so much for doing these videos! So freakin' good!

  • You couldn't have made an Ozzy Osbourne reference? Gah!

  • actuly the theif has a lot of estra events the other characters dont have, like meeting the chief thief, finding the thieves guild, makeing the theif sign (epic lol there) and stealing stuff which i found very entertaining in the QFG series. You should make a video about the thief path as well as the paladin path to cover the extra stuff.

  • I did all those things in this Let's Play, using the paladin character. You don't need to be a thief to do them, you just need thief skills, which this paladin has.

  • Gah, n/m I just realized that I have a disc version.

  • I get the background and the wolves, but still no voice overs...does anyone know how I can make it work?

  • Funny, it reminds me of german when LateBlt said "We are here to..." about 00:20 or so ^_^

Great work as always, you two guys are among my favourite Let's Players ^_^ I will personally be trying to grind up my character in QFG1 and then begin with QFG2 Remake by AGD Interactive, which is quite interesting :P

  • i don't get the sierra logo or talking in my game so, is that good or bad using dos box. no cd just dosbox and game

  • To make sound work i suggest you run the game through dosbox 0.72

  • That's not the problem, the problem was my patch settings in the resource.cfg file, but changing them made my existing saved games stop working.

  • that sounds very complex..but if thats the case at least you shouldnt have any trouble changing the resource.cfg for new games :).

  • I had the same problem with mine, and it was fixed by mounting C: as the directory, and cd-ing to the directory. The game uses specific directories to find the sounds, and if running in dosbox it tries to use the mounted directory as C: and follow it to the listed directory, which won't work of course.

So it works if you mount C: as the mounted drive, it should work :)

  • O_O never played it but watching because qfg1 and qfg2 were my favorite 2 games when young.

  • All the let's play videos are great

  • thanks for the let's play!

  • oh, fuck. Then you won't even still have Soulforge?

  • dees menu ees dildoes!

  • I haven't played quest for glory in so many years. It takes me back.

  • you're really fun to listen to, nice let's play !!

  • pretty good but.....HOW DO YOU NOT LIKE THE NARRATOR!!! HE IS BY FAR THE GREATEST NARRATOR EVER!!!!

  • your sooooooooooo talkative it took you 8mins before you start the game.

  • Thanks. =) I know I take a long time, but that's kind of the point... I'm deliberately trying to do all the interesting things in the game, so that people who can't/won't play the game can see everything.

  • Huzzah!

  • TELL ME HOW!!!!!!!!! >:(

  • i miss this game, I NEED to play it!!!

  • This game was a bit of a heartbreaker. I never, *ever* got this thing to run properly, no matter what year or system. I didn't have a machine with a CD-ROM for the longest time, but I did borrow it on 3.5" floppies a year or so after it came out. Of course, this was unpatched, and I got the death error that made the game unfinishable.

Ever since then, I've never managed to tweak things like DOSBox properly enough to have it run. I've got the Quest for Glory CD-Rom Anthology but it's no help.

  • I hope at the end of this LP you have a change of heart and do QfG3. I know you've never played it, but it might be fun to watch you fumble through it. Sure, the puzzles may not be as good as the other games, but I always liked 3's plot and world the best. I <3 liontaurs and their pyramids :D

  • Hm... I disagree about the thief. The thief has things other classes can't see/do in the case of every game (thieves guild, robbing houses, chief thief here in Mordavia). Also the Magic user... I can't agree. They have more to do than just deal with the Faeries, though there is an entire quest surrounding that aspect (giving you more back story on Erana, spells no one else can get, and a magic staff). I have to say all the classes are worth a try for people interested.

  • You don't need to be a thief to break into people's houses, see the thieves' guild, etc. You just need thief SKILLS. As a paladin with thief skills, I'll still be able to do those things in this run of the game.

  • How would you get the thieves' toolkit as a non-thief?

  • By taking the thieves' toolkit. :) There's no requirement that you have to be a thief to get it.

  • I kinda liked the audio though, the guy who speaks it is the same guy who played the Professor in the TV Sliders Series, and he was also Salah in Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Last Crusade.

  • John Rhys-Davies, he also did the Sallah guy in Indiana Jones 1 and 3, Gimli in Lord of the rings and much more. Great actor, marvelous voice.

  • he's also in Wing Commander 3 - Heart of the Tiger ;)

  • Screw the Acrobatics? Well, I have to say that jumping across the swamp is really funny, but I have to admit that is probably just for thief, 'cause wizard has the Glide spell and the other two fighting kits just can swim...

  • I love how the hero has his chest fully exposed so everyone can see his manly muscles. :)

  • What? When does this happen?! O_o

  • Well, I guess it's not *fully* exposed, but if you look closely, his shirt is partially open and you can see a good deal of his chest. It's not very detailed or inappropriate, it's just there.

  • Hmm, I guess it's somewhat racy, but it's tastefully understated. =)

  • If I remember right, I think the pala with magic points can fight the fairy queen unless you are not referring to hybrids. If you aren't considering hybrids, there is another class that see an npc that others do not, which is the thief class; they meet the guild thief who is hidden in the guild.

  • To clarify and not to spoil stuff, the thief class has something special, which is a quest to help the guild thief.

  • Other classes can meet the chief thief too, as long as they have thief skills. I'll stop back in at the adventurer's guild later and enter the thieves' guild.

  • QfG2 VGA came out Sunday night, if anyone is interested.

Do you have the "SET Blaster=" settings right in DosBox? Can't remember if IRQ 5 or 7 works better, or which is the default, but sometimes it helps to switch to the other. I use D-Fend to change my DosBox settings, but I don't know if that frontend is up to date any more. There are others though.

Also, you did use NewRisingSun's patch right?

Yep, I like the animated icons - I played the DOS version instead of Win vers (not animated).

  • Ooh, I just thought of something...

Check your near the end of Resource.cfg in the QfG4 directory. Maybe the setting resSFX= isn't pointing to the proper folder for it to work in DosBox.

How mine is set up to work without DosBox, also notated with changes you can make:

resAUD=(the Resource.aud folder)(faster loading voices if you copy the Resource.aud to the hard drive)

resSFX=C:\SIERRA\QG4CD (change this to =.\ which means "this directory")

    patchDir=C:\SIERRA\QG4CD (same as previous entry)

  • I don't have the resource.aud file. I actually have the full CD version, but I'm playing this on a copy of the CD version that doesn't have the .AUD file. That's probably part of why it won't work.

  • The .AUD should be the voices (as big as it is), but the installer should have copied RESOURCE.SFX to your hard drive (or you should have if installing manually). Make sure that is there. And make sure to check the RESOURCE.CFG file in notepad to see if all the settings are right, especially the resSFX and patchDIR lines. Taking out the resSFX line in my CFG file also made the sound effects stop.

There may also be an old official patch somewhere (not on the Sierra site any more?).

  • lol,drunk thief. XD

  • Yey! The start of QFGIV & a new LB2:DOAR.

Today is a good day for the internetz.

Besides the guild master that looks like Peter Lorre, with a thief you can also break into

the old man's house and another statue of the black bird appears in the monastery. With your thief skills I imagine you'll be able to access these treats as well.

  • Thank thee for your kind words.

  • Thank you for the character that I will now stalk via Youtube! =3

  • What do you mean you hate the voiceovers in this game? How can you hate John Rhys-Davies as the narrator?

  • I dislike most adventures that use voice narration. It matters not who the narrator is, or how they narrate. I'd rather read something than have someone read it out for me.

  • There are some *cough* cheats which you can use to create characters.

  • I thoroughly enjoyed your QFG2 playthrough and am looking forward to this one. Somewhat disappointed you didn't want to do a QFG3 one but I did play that a year or so ago with DosBox so vaguely remember it. It wasn't much of a "game", very little to actually DO .. no puzzles or thinking required really. Anyway looking forward to watching these clips, I've never played QFG4.

  • I never played QFG3, so I wouldn't have really been able to properly make videos about it.

  • You coulda played blind. Perhaps it would have been as humorous as the dagger (or lack theirof) moment.

  • Hmmm, I have no idea how much youve recorded so far, but do you think it might be a good idea to explain all the stuff that happened in Tarna? Or at least the stuff at the lost city or whatever it was called

Just incase someone hasnt played QGF3 so theyre not left wondering how the hero went from all happy and cheeful as Prince of Shapeir to trapped in the cave wondering where his luggage is..

  • I honestly don't know what happened in Tarna. I didn't play QFG3. As far as I can tell, though, even those who DID play it are pretty much in the dark, as there's no real explanation as to how or why the hero ends up here.

  • if I remember correctly at the end of QFG3 youre celebrating all happy after defeating a demon wizard and then you have a bit of a seizure and then it cuts to a screen showing two hooded figures looking through a crystal orb at you

Or something like that, its been a few years

  • Precisely... Which makes no sense and is really nothing more than a plot contrivance to handwave the act of putting the hero in an unfamiliar place and situation for no apparent reason, similar to the Leisure Suit Larry 4 back-story for Leisure Suit Larry 5.

  • Why are you saying, "You suck," so much? Its not like you, LateBlt. Are you under the influence of HerCrabbieness?

  • I'm just kidding. She does it to me all the time. Turnabout is fair play. :)

  • In other words, I'm a bad influence on him. :P

  • Paladins are fun to play with. Just have to be honourable pretty much 100% of the time. Glad to see the paladin in action.

  • Woohoo!

  • Glad to see you two back! I can't wait to see more. :D

  • Yes! Finally shadows of Darkness! :D

  • Paladins are pretty cool , Indeed when i first clocked 4 I imported (from qg1 i beleive) .

but I wanted to get a pally all the way though (since i was ..."inspired" by you videos to play qg2)

I think also once in qg3 it gave me the class selection so i got to play it as a pally.

so a double LP eh? I must admit that its a lot more intersting with 2 people.

  • WOOOT!!!!!!!!

  • More Let's plays! I'm so happy!

  • Just a couple of things.

The Skill also affects the puzzles in craniums lab.

The game might crash at different times.

Watch out for the chernobal wizards they are tough and the narrator and most characters have accents.

  • I know most characters have accents, but hercrabbiness and I have a limited litany of Eastern European accents, so we'll probably be doing some characters unaccented.

  • I've met the Fairy Queen before and she is a real bitch.

  • Good thing we didn't choose to be magic users, then.

  • If you downloaded the game, then that would happen. However, you would hear the sound effects on the floppy version, no matter what.

I have both versions, and the sound makes it THAT much more interesting.

PS. I found an EXTREMELY weird glitch (I would call it glitch cause in the CD version it would crash, but it works on the floppy version). If you want, I can upload it onto youtube and video-reply it to you.

  • Interesting, but if I turn on the voices in this game, the voices DO work; I just don't get any sound effects.

As for the video-reply: Sure, that sounds interesting. Game glitches are funny.

  • you guys sounded a bit edgy this time. Is something up?

Anywho, great as usual. I might go through QfG3 for the hell of it, unless it's really that bad or something.

  • Hah, not really, I think I was mostly just annoyed that the sound doesn't work, and that I don't really like this game anyway. :D QFG3 is okay, the plot isn't all that bad, but most people seem to think that QFG3 is an abomination and QFG4 is the best of the series. I like all the games to a certain extent, it's all good to me...

  • Yeah, while playing QfG3 again now that I am apparently older and wiser I discovered a whole new appreciation for it. It is perhaps the most philosophical of the series, with lots of thoughts regarding the nature of war, friendship, putting greater good above personal gain and such.

  • woo hoo!!!!!

  • hooray for qfg4 lp! you guys are awesome!

btw, i believe the thief does indeed get some special quests/gets to meet a unique character (the chief thief in the thieves guild). just wanted to point that out because i presume you won't be able to meet him (or "join" the thieves guild) as a paladin.

  • You CAN XD. If you have the thief skills like climbing, pick locks, and the such, you can figure out everything.

  • Indeed! And since we have thief skills, we'll be able to take those little diversions. :)

  • And this game doesn't do anything silly like disqualify you from Paladinhood for doing so ;-)

  • I though you guys would finish Laura Bow 2 before starting this, but I´m glad to see I was wrong.

You kept saying you have great stats, but then you turn the skill down because you´re not very skilled? :) For a let´s play it´s obviously better, but I just found that funny.

That "hieno juttu" actually came off in a Finnish accent, bravo. ^^

  • Well, I think the skill level mostly impacts silly things like the fighting, which are incidental to the video, so yeah, I'd prefer for them to be quick and simple. Kiitos!

  • props to you, crowley9

  • oooooh hercrabbiness said a naughty word

  • Hot, ain't it?

  • I figure by the ripe old age of 22, I should be allowed to say the B-word. :)

  • Out of curiosity (and you might have answered this in the QFG2 videos), is there a reason why you're skipping QFG3?

  • Originally, I wasn't planning on doing either 3 or 4, but so many people seem to love 4 so much that I just kind of shrugged and decided I'd do 4. I don't really like 3 or 4 because of the mouse interface.

  • sweet new lp!!

  • Hercrabbiness does rock!

  • I think she agrees with you. :)

  • OH HELL YEAH!

i thought you said you werent going to do this..i really enjoy your lps

    AWSOME!

  • I changed my mind... Thanks. =)
